2007년에 서울프린지페스티벌 초청으로 한국에 와서 빵과 여러 곳에서 공연한바 있습니다.
그때 깊은 인상을 남기고 갔습니다.
이번에는 밴드 자체 투어로 한국을 방문하여 빵(29일), 크랙(서울라이브뮤직페스타,크랙,30일)에서
공연하고 부산과 요기가갤러리에서도 공연이 예정되어 있습니다.

The
Observatory are an independent avant rock band and an experimental music group
based in Singapore, consisting largely of alumni from significant 1990s
Singaporean bands.
The Observatory는 싱가포르의 인디 아방가르드 록밴드이며 실험적 음악 집단이며 90년대 싱가포르의 중요한 밴드들의 일원으로 구성되어 있다.
Founded in 2001, the
group's main tenet is to push individual and collective boundaries farther. The
goal isn’t just about creating music that contains universal themes or writing
about life from a distinctly Singaporean perspective. It’s about breaking down
inhibition, convention and the mechanical way of commercial music-making.
2001년에 결성된 밴드의 신조는 각 멤버의 개성과 집합으로서의 밴드의 영역을 넓혀 나가는 것이다. 그 목표는 단순히 보편적인 주제의 음악을 만드는 것, 혹은 싱가폴인의 시선에서 바라본 삶에 대해 쓰는 것에 그치지 않는다. 그것은 모든 억압과 관습 그리고 상업적 음악 제작의 기계적인 방식을 전복시키는 데에 있다.
The group draws
inspiration from their Southeast Asian roots and an unavoidable post-colonial
musical diet. The Observatory fuse unconventional structures, Asian rhythms,
bold arrangements, improvisation, thought and expression, while borrowing from
random music styles to stir up a potent concoction of emotionally powerful
extremes, disturbed and angry on one end, haunting and melancholic on the
other.
밴드는 그들의 동남아시아 근원과 회피할 수 없는 후기-식민지적 음악적 취향에서 영감을 얻는다. The Observatory는 비관습적인 구조, 아시아 리듬, 과감한 편곡, 즉흥연주, 생각과 표현을 한데 섞는다. 다양한 음악 스타일을 통해 감정의 강렬한 극단, 한편으로는 불편하고 분노에 가득찬 반면에 잊혀지지 않고 멜랑콜리한 잠재적인 조합을 만들어낸다.
The heart and soul of
The Observatory is in its constant reinvention. With each release, the members
have persisted in their experimental take on the songform. This frequently
takes their music to the outer limits, creating a rich musical
repertoire that’s texturally complex in a sonic tour de force of songs
that are viscerally emotional and splintering in its bleakness. A study in
delusion, insanity and obsession, Catacombs, their latest album,
provokes and inspires in a deeply enigmatic way. Even at its coldest and most
abstract, it is human to the core.
The Observatory의 중심에는 끊임없는 재창조가 있다. 매 앨범마다 멤버들은 노래의 구조에 실험적인 시도를 추구해 왔다. 이것은 종종 그들의 음악을 경계선 바깥으로 데려가주곤 한다. 그 결과로 만들어진 뛰어난 곡들은 강렬한 음향속에서 복잡한 텍스쳐를 지니며 본능의 감정에 충실하고 황량함의 파편을 이끌어낸다. 망상에 대한 연구, 광기와 집착, 그들의 최근 앨범 Catacombs는 깊고 불가사의한 방식으로 영감을 환기시킨다. 심지어 가장 차갑고 추상적인 순간에도 그 중심에는 인간이 있다.
The Observatory has toured quite extensively since 2011. Having done a couple of gigs in Oslo late 2011, in late 2012 they returned to Norway to tour 6 cities. Then in April 2013 they returned to Europe again but this time to Italy, Germany and Holland. So for this next tour, currently titled ‘The Zomian tour’, they intend to reach out to Philippines, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea and China with new material that they are currently working on.
The Observatory는 2011년부터 많은 투어를 했다. 2011년 말 오슬로에서의 몇번의 공연을 치루고, 2012년 말에 다시 노르웨이에 돌아와 여섯 도시에서 투어를 했다. 2013년 4월에 다시 유럽으로 떠나 이탈리아, 독일, 네덜란드에서 공연했다. 이번 투어에서는 ‘The Zomian tour’라는 이름으로 새로 작업하고 있는 곡들과 함께 필리핀, 홍콩, 일본, 중국, 한국을 돌 예정이다.
