오늘은 기념비적인 날이다.

Today is a monumental day in New Silk Road pilgrimage.

아침 일찍 무심거사(이상훈 수원대前교수)와 함께 성전에 가서 대기하였다.

그저께까지 며칠동안 큰 법회가 이루어진 직후여서 달라이라마 성하께서는 많은 사람들을 친견하셨다.

여든 중반을 지나시고 있음에도 성하께서는 찾아오는 모든 이를 보듬어 주신다.

필자는 사무국의 배려로 많은 시간을 사용할 수 있도록 뒷차례에 대기하였다.

이윽고 필자의 차례가 왔다.

Early in the morning, I went to the temple and waited for the meeting of HH Dalai Lama, with Sang Hoon Lee (retired professor of Suwon University).  Up until the day before yesterday there was a big preaching of Buddism, and many people have waited for the meeting of Dalai Lama.  His age is over 80 but he have hugged many people who visit the temple.  I was assigned to the last seat of visitors by the staff so as to get more time to talk with Dalai Lama.  At last, I approached HH Dalai Lama.

1. 필자가 성하에게 절을 한다,

I gave a big bow to HH Dalai Lama.

2. 삼배를 올려야 하건만 주위의 사람들이 머리맡에 경배드리는 것으로 제한시킨다.

According to Korean tradition of Buddists, I have to give three bows. 

But the staff restricted me to make one bow only.

3. 성하께서 필자의 손을 잡아주신다.

HH Dalai Lam grasped my hands.

4, 필자가 준비한 내용을 필자가 한국어로 말씀드리고

영어문서로 보여드리고, 지애 보살이 티벳어로 보충설명한다.

I read the memo which I have prepared in Korean.  He read the memo written in English. 

The translator explained in Tibetan when necessary. 

달라이라마 성하께 드리는 말씀

전세계인에게 자비와 평화를 전파하시는 달라이라마 성하께 진심으로 존경의 인사를 올립니다.

저는 한국의 한 사람의 대학교수로서2017년 5월 부처님오신날에 서울을 출발하여, 일본, 대만, 홍콩, 베트남, 태국, 말레이시아, 그리고 네팔을 포함한 인도 코스를 걸어왔습니다. 거리는 약 5,000km입니다.

원전은 지진 때문에 핵무기보다 위험합니다. 핵폐기물은 후손의 희생을 강요합니다. 

후쿠시마 사고가 난지 8년이 지나고 있지만 UN은 속수무책입니다.
원전을 대신하는 다른 대안이 있음에도 방관하고 있습니다.

지구는 오직 하나뿐입니다.
가정에도 아버지와 어머니가 있듯이 어머니 역할을 하는 '또다른 새로운 UN'이 필요합니다. 사람이 두다리로 걷듯이 말입니다.

세계의 종교지도자의 뜻을 모으면 지구를 다른 차원에서 보호하는 장치를 만들수 있으리라는 생각을 갖게 되었습니다. 그리고 그 희망을 직접 전하고 싶었습니다.

지난 3년간 여러사람의 힘을 모아 그러한 뜻을 담은 지구생명헌장2018서울안을 준비하였습니다.

이 헌장에는 1982년의 유엔 세계자연헌장 그리고 2000년의 지구헌장의 취지를 계승하면서 생명의 존엄성과 핵을 폐기하자는 내용, 그리고 종교지도자께 드리는 제언을 담았습니다.

달라이라마 성하께 올리고자 합니다.
그리고 계속 걸어가서 가톨릭 프란치스코 로마 교황께 전하고자 합니다.

달라이라마 성하께서 지구촌의 생명과 안전을 지키는 일에 뜻을 함께 하시고 그 뜻을 널리 알리신다면 지구촌에 더할 나위없는 축복이 되리라고 생각합니다.

Respected His Holiness the Dalai Lama

Great honor to meet Your Holiness, a renowned world leader and receive Your Holiness’s great teaching and guidance on mercy and peace of the global world.

I am a professor from South Korea.
I started to walk from Seoul, on Buddha’s birthday in May 2017.
I walked through Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Nepal, and India.
I walked 5,000 kilometers.
Because of earthquake, nuclear power plants are more dangerous than nuclear weapons.  Nuclear waste forces the sacrifice of next generations.

Eight years have passed since Hukushima accident in Japan broke out. 
But UN has done nothing regarding nuclear power plants safety.
UN has kept silence although there is alternative to nuclear power plants
There is only one earth.
We need new UN which will protect the safety of humans and other life forms.
One family has both father and mother.
We need 'another new UN' which will work as mother. 
Just like we walk with two legs.

I hope religious leaders of the earth work together on this subject.
I think if religious leaders work together, we can make other UN which will protect the earth.  
I came here to convey my heart to Your Holiness.

Many people have worked together for 3 years, and made The Earth Life Charter 2018 Seoul (draft).
This Charter inherits the spirit of UN World Nature Charter 1982, and The Earth Charter 2000.

This charter contains the dignity of life, the dismantlement of nuclear power plants, and suggestion to religious leaders of the world.
I offer this Earth Life Charter to Your Holiness.
I will continue to walk until I meet Catholic Pope Francisco at Vatican in Rome.

I wish Your Holiness, Dalai Lama to participate in this task to protect the humans  and all life forms of the earth. 
I pray your blessing to be conveyed to all humans and life forms of the earth.

I appreciate  Your Holiness.

6. 달라이라마성하께서 필자가 말씀드리는 내용을 충분히 이해하셨다. 여러 나라를 걸어온 이야기와 '또다른 새로운 UN'에 관한 내용과 앞으로 필자가 바티칸까지 걸어가서 이 내용과 헌장을 전달할 예정이라는 내용을 이해하셨다.

Dalai Lama understood the core of my explanation.  He understood my story about pilgrimage, necessity of making another new UN, and my plan to continue walking until I meet Pope Francisco.

7. 그러시면서 원전의 위험을 잘 알고 계신다고 말씀하신다. 그리고 일본을 방문했을 때 탈원전 운동하는 분들을 만났다고 하시면서 그들과 함께 탈원전의 운동을 하면 좋겠다는 말씀도 해주신다.

And then he said, "I know the danger of Nuclear Power Plants.  When I visited Japan after Hukushima accident broke out, I met the activists who fight for the safety of Nuclear Power Plants.  I recommend you to expand the anti-nuke movement."

I gave him the statue of Buddha as present. 

The statue was made by Cheol Guy Kim who was an artist in Korea.

And we took a picture with him.

9. 성하께서 필자와 무심거사가 불자임을 확인하신 후 친히 작은 불상을 하사하신다.

HH Dalai Lama gave a small statue of Buddha as present, confirm‎ing that I and Professor Lee were Buddhist.

10. 성하께서 하사하시고 필자들은 두손으로 받는다.

HH gave me the statue and I received the present. 

11, 광채가 하염없이 빛나는 불상이다. 더 없는 영광이다.

The statue was glistering with light. 

Receiving the statue from HH Dalai Lama was a great honor.   

달라이라마 성하의 배려와 말씀에 깊은 감사를 올립니다.

통역을 해주신 지애보살님과 사진을 찍어주신 사무국에 감사드리며

그리고 오늘의 뜻깊은 '친견'을 위해 그동안 음으로 양으로 보살펴주신 분들께 감사를 드립니다.

달라이라마 성하께서는 2011년 11월 6일 후쿠시마 원전 사고를 위로하기 위해 직접 후쿠시마 현에 가셨다고 합니다. 주변에서 건강과 노령의 나이(당시 76세)를 걱정해 만류했지만, 종교 지도자로서 그들을 만나고 희망을 주는 것은 의무라고 하시면서 방문하셨습니다.
