현재 인터넷상에서 많이 돌아다니고 있는 그림인데, 일부 내용이 와전되어 있는 것 같습니다.

“푸에르토리코의 독립영웅이 독립운동 중 잡혀 수감되어... 딸이 그녀의 젖을 굶고 있는 아버지에게 먹인다...” 는 우리의 감성을 자극하고 감동적인 내용인데...
이 그림은 푸에르토리코의 영웅과는 상관이 없습니다.

이 그림은 고대 로마의 문학이나 예술에서 “자식된 도리”를 설명하면서 예를 드는 장면입니다. 우리나라로 말하면 심청전의 서양버전이라고 할 수 있겠습니다.

시몬(Cimon) ? 영어권에서는 Simon이라고 합니다. - 은 곧 처형될 날만을 기다리는 나이든 수감수입니다. 게다가 처형날까지 아무것도 먹지 못하도록 되어 있었습니다. 이를 안타깝게 여긴 그의 딸 페로(Pero)가 몰래 감방에 들어와 아버지에게 그녀의 젖을 먹인다는 자식의 아버지(부모)에 대한 무조건적인 헌신과 사랑을 나타낸 것입니다.

로마의 사학자 발레리우스 막시무스(Valerius Maximus)는 페로의 이러한 헌신은 부모를 공경하는 가장 고결하고도 숭고한 예라고도 했습니다.

이러한 이야기는 당연히 화가들의 좋은 소재가 충분히 되었을 것이고 이를 소재로한 그림들이 16세기에서 18세기에 걸쳐 유럽에 크게 유행하였던 것입니다.

대부분의 제목이 “Roman Charity”이고 부제는 Cimon(Simon) & Pero입니다.

루벤스(Rubens) 또한 이런 소재로 그림을 그렸는데, 프랑스 화가인 쟝 밥티스트 글뤼즈(Jean-Baptiste Greuze)는 루벤스의 그림을 이용하여 다른 방식으로 화폭에 담기도 했습니다.

Coro: Schwingt freudig euch empor    루벤스 [Peter Paul Rubens, 1577.6.28~1640.5.30]    플랑드르의 화가. 바로크 시대 플랑드르 제일의 화가로서 날로 높아가는 명성과 많은 제자들에게 둘러싸여 특유의 화려하고 장대한 예술을 펼쳐나갔다. 현란한 그의 작품은 감각적이고 관능적이며 밝게 타오르는 듯한 색채와 웅대한 구도가 어울려 생기가 넘친다.     독일 베스트팔렌 지겐 출생. 아버지가 정치적인 이유로 지겐으로 피해 있을 때 그곳에서 태어났다. 아버지가 죽자 10세 때 가족과 함께 고향인 안트베르펜으로 돌아와 라틴어 학교에 다녔다. 3년 뒤 14세에 랄랭 백작부인의 시동이 되어 귀족사회의 습속을 익혔고, 화가가 될 뜻을 세웠다. 15세 때 A.노르트(1562∼1641), O.베니우스(1556∼1629) 등에게 그림을 배운 뒤 21세 때인 1598년 당당히 안트베르펜화가조합에 등록, 23세 때인 1600년에 이탈리아 유학의 꿈을 실현시켰다. 이탈리아에 머무는 8년 동안 베네치아·로마 등지에서 고대미술과 르네상스의 거장들의 작품을 연구하고 당시 이탈리아의 바로크화가인 M.카라바조와 카라치파(派)의 영향을 받아 장족의 발전을 이루어 차차 명성을 얻는 한편, 만토바공(公)의 인정을 받아 그의 사절로서 외교적 사명을 띠고 에스파냐로 여행하였다. 1608년 어머니가 위독하다는 소식을 듣고 고향에 왔을 때 이미 어머니가 운명한 뒤였으나, 그는 플랑드르 제일의 화가로서 고향 사람들의 환영을 받았다. 1609년 플랑드르 총독 알브레흐트 대공의 궁정화가가 되었고, 10월에는 명문 집안의 딸 이사벨라 브란트와 결혼하였다. 그 뒤로는 날로 높아가는 명성과 많은 제자들에게 둘러싸여 루벤스 특유의 화려하고 장대한 예술을 펼쳐나갔다. 역사화·종교화를 비롯하여 많은 종류의 제재를 작품화하였는데, 파리의 뤽상부르궁전의 21면으로 이루어진 연작 대벽화 《마리 드 메디시스의 생애》는 그의 기념비적 작품으로, 루벤스 예술의 모든 특질을 담고 있으며 바로크회화의 집대성이라 할 수 있다. 현란한 그의 작품은 감각적이고 관능적이며 밝게 타오르는 듯한 색채와 웅대한 구도가 어울려 생기가 넘친다. 외교관으로서도 활약하였으며 원만하고 따뜻한 인품으로 말미암아 유럽 각국 왕들의 존경과 사랑을 받았다. 1626년 아내 이사벨라가 죽은 후, 1630년 16세의 엘레나 푸르망과 재혼하였다. 1640년 팔의 통풍이 심장에까지 번져 안트베르펜에서 죽었다. : 네이버 백과         Monet
