에티카 러버는 리닝의 러버를 개발하는 과정에서 준비되었습니다.
영문 소개서를 작성했는데, 영문 소개서를 번역하면서, 에티카 러버 이야기를 해 보도록 하죠.
영상은 최근에 있었던 그랜드파이널스 대회 모습입니다.
중국의 대표적인 선수인 마롱 선수와 슈신 선수의 모습입니다.
마롱 선수는 DHS 계약 선수이고, 슈신 선수는 스티가 계약 선수로, 각자 사용하는 라켓은 다릅니다.
그러나 두 사람이 입고 있는 옷과 신고 있는 신발은 전부 리닝 제품이죠.
리닝은 한국에는 조금 생소하지만 중국에서는 나이키와 비슷한 거대 브랜드이죠.
리닝 제품을 몇 가지 보여 드리도록 하죠.

나름 독창적인 컬러의 제품들을 만들고 있는 것을 아실 수 있을 것입니다.

I built a trustworthy relationship with Li-Ning as their table tennis gear agent in Korea. They have been producing table tennis shoes, clothing, and accessories, such as towels, bags, and socks. Li-Ning Co., Ltd. is a Chinese company that makes athletic shoes and sporting goods. They endorse a number of athletes and teams, both in China and around the world. The company’s motto is, “Anything is possible!”
저는 리닝의 한국 에이전시로서 리닝과 매우 두터운 관계를 가지고 있습니다.
리닝은 탁구화와 옷, 그리고 가방, 수건, 양말 등 여러 탁구 제품을 만들고 있는 중국 회사로
중국 국대팀을 비롯해서 많은 유명 선수들을 후원하고 있습니다.
리닝의 모토는 "불가능은 없다"입니다.

Li-Ning was founded by Li Ning, a former gymnastics champion. His manager of foreign sales wanted to expand their table tennis line to include rubbers. After several meetings and discussions, I was designated as the official Li-Ning table tennis equipment developer. I spent 2019 creating the entire line-up for Li-Ning’s new endeavor.
리닝은 과거 체조 선수였던 리닝이 창업한 회사입니다.
해외 영업팀을 이끌고 있는 매니저는 제품 라인업에 탁구 라켓과 러버 등을 추가하기를 원했고,
이 문제를 놓고 저와 같이 여러 논의를 한 끝에
저는 2019년에 리닝의 탁구용품 개발 업무 매니저로 선임되었습니다.
I utilized my production network for Nexy brand (blades, rubbers, clothing, balls, accessories, etc.). For the rubber development, I contacted a Japanese producer, who had dedicated several decades working for Stiga. I knew that Stiga moved to a German producer, and this factory was looking to work with another big brand. I was lucky to test the latest products they were developing. The timing was perfect!
저는 넥시 제품을 개발하면서 같이 개발에 참여했던 업체들을 활용해서 리닝 제품들을 준비해 왔습니다.
러버 개발을 위해서는 스티가 러버들을 제작해 왔던 일본 업체와 같이 일했습니다.
스티가는 최근에 독일 공장으로 제품을 옮겼고,
일본의 이 공장은 스티가를 대체할 대형 브랜드가 시급했던 상황이었음을 알고 있었기 때문에
해당 공장의 최상품 러버를 받을 수 있을 것으로 생각했기 때문입니다.
한편으로는 매우 적절한 타이밍에 저는 리닝과 이 일본 회사를 연결할 수 있었다고 생각하며,
운이 좋았다고 할 수 있습니다.

From the beginning, my goal was clear. The rubber had to compete with other Japanese brands. Li-Ning has a large share of the sports gear market in China, and their main table tennis rivalry needed to be a Japanese brand. And this rubber producer had been studying many years how to develop a good rubber to compete with the other top Japanese-produced rubbers. It’s no surprise that the name of the other Japanese brand’s rubber was Tenergy 05.
초기부터 제 목표는 분명했습니다.
제작될 러버는 여타 일본 브랜드 러버들보다 좋아야 합니다.
리닝은 중국 내에서는 매우 큰 브랜드이며, 직접적으로는 일본 브랜드 (버터플라이)와 경쟁하고 있습니다.
또한 제가 러버 개발을 진행한 일본 회사는 수년동안
이 다른 일본 브랜드 러버 (테너지05)를 능가할 수 있는 러버 개발에 초점을 두고 노력해 왔습니다.
I was not sure that I could make something better than Tenergy with this company, but I was confident that I could make something as good, which would guarantee success for Li-Ning. So, all the focus was on exceeding characteristics of Tenergy — one more spin, one inch longer bounce, and one mm higher trajectory. If we were successful, then we could potentially take-over the market, even though Li-Ning is a new comer.
저는 테너지보다도 더 좋은 러버를 개발할 수 있을지에 대해서 확신할 수 없었습니다만,
리닝이 시장 내에서 성공하기 위해 필요한 제품을 만들 수 있을 것이라는 자신감을 가지고 있었습니다.
그러므로 러버 개발의 모든 주안점은 테너지를 겨냥하고 있었습니다.
한 바퀴 더 많은 회전, 1cm 더 길게 뻗는 송구, 1cm 더 높은 공 궤적을 만들어 내야 했습니다.
제품만 좋다면 용품업체로서 신생 브랜드이지만 리닝은 충분히 시장을 석권할 수 있는
유통력을 가지고 있습니다.
Over the course of several months, I received six shipments of their top technology samples, and I tested those rubbers with my old friend, Joo Sae Hyuk, with whom I am personally sponsoring with Nexy. It took a year to finalize, and the final samples were sent to a German testing center, where many players could demo the rubbers and report on their findings.
제품 개발 과정에 있어서 저는 6장의 각각 다른 샘플들을 제작했고,
해당 샘플들은 제 오랜 친구이자 넥시 후원 선수이기도 한 주세혁 선수에 의해
면밀하게 시타, 평가 되었습니다.
그리고 최종 샘플은 독일의 시타 기관으로 보내 져서 세계적인 선수들에 의해 점검되었습니다.
Even though I did not want to accept it, I should confess, it was clear that there is a gap between what amateur players like and what professional players choose to play with. Li-Ning wanted to sponsor this rubber to a newly contracted Chinese National player. Therefor, my priority was to satisfy top world-class professional players, not amateur players.
사실 아마추어와 프로선수들 간에는 용품 선호에 있어 차이가 있으며,
리닝은 아마추어 시장보다는 중국 내 대표팀 선수들을 만족시키기를 원했기 때문에
러버 개발의 주목적은 정상급 선수들의 선호를 우선적으로 고려했습니다.
It was not an easy process because my playing level was not high enough to know exactly what elite players are looking for, but with the help of Joo Sae Hyuk, I could figure it out. As a designer of MX-K and Karis, I already knew what was needed for world-class players using German material, but with Japanese top sheet and sponge. It was a path I had never traveled.
제 탁구 실력이 최상급 선수들에 미치지 못 하기 때문에 선수들이 원하는 러버를 알기에는 한계가 있었지만
주세혁 선수의 도움으로 좋은 러버를 만들 수 있었습니다.
넥시 디자이너로서 카리스 러버를 제작할 당시
저는 이미 독일 러버를 사용하고 있는 정상급 선수들이 원하는 것이 무엇인지를 잘 알고 있었지만,
일본 러버 공장에서 좋은 러버를 만드는 것은 상당한 모험이었습니다.
I spent the past year and a half developing Li-Ning’s new rubber. Unfortunately, Li-Ning decided to delay this new investment project due to the virus situation, and I had to find a postive way to make up for all the time and effort. I had two final sample types, and I decided to launch one as Nexy’s new rubber.
약 1년 반의 기간 동안 저는 리닝의 새로운 러버를 개발해 왔습니다.
그러나 불행하게도 리닝은 바이러스 상황 속에서 탁구용품을 런칭하는 것이 적절하지 않다고 판단했고,
적절한 시기를 찾아 제품 출시를 연기하게 되었습니다.
그러나 그 과정에서 최종적으로 두 개의 다른 러버를 개발 완료할 수 있었고,
그 중 하나를 넥시의 에티카 러버로 출시합니다.
Therefore, this inverted rubber does not share the physical qualities of the shorter pimple structure of Karis and MX-K. It has a normal length column structure. But this rubber is similar to Stiga’s rubber line-up, from Airoc to Mantra. I carefully studied what could be added to the former Stiga’s representative rubbers. I could do that well, because I had worked as a Stiga agent for several years.
그러므로 에티카는 넥시의 카리스와 넥시에서 개발한 티바의 MX-K가 차용하고 있는
짧은 돌기 구조를 가지고 있지는 않습니다.
오히려 에어록에서 만트라로 이어진 스티가 러버들과 유사한 특성을 지니고 있습니다.
스티가의 에이전시이기도 했기 때문에 저는 해당 러버들에 대해서도 잘 이해하고 있었습니다.
For world class players, the features required include:
1. The rubber has to maintain enough power to send the ball with an expected arc when hit with extreme power. Therefore, the number one priority for the top-class players is that the feedback from the rubber be consistent and steady, even when the ball is hit with extreme power and rapid spin generation.
2. The rubber has to perform with consistency throughout play. The ball must remain powerful when attacking as well as blocking. Top-class players need to know what to expect out of their rubber for a wide variety of shots.
3. The rubber must generate more spin. Since the adoption of the ABS ball, modern players are in an ongoing pursuit of extra rotation. ETIKA should prove that it has more spin than other rubbers. And, the spin ability should remain stable when used close to the table or away from the table.
4. The rubber must be responsive for close-to-the-table play. Today’s matches are getting faster, more powerful, and compact. Modern players tend to play closer, using short, aggressive swing movement. ETIKA is extremely responsive and suited for playing up close. Note: ETIKA also performs well off the table.
세계 정상급 선수들이 요구하는 러버 특성은 다음과 같습니다.
1. 강한 임팩트로 반구된 공을 맞쳤을 때 공이 죽는 현상이 없어야 합니다.
아무리 강한 임팩트로 랠리가 오고 간다고 하더라도 예측 가능한 범주 내에서 반응해야 합니다.
2. 러버의 반응은 일관성이 있어야 합니다.
공격 시에는 물론이고, 수비할 때에도 마찬가지입니다.
여러 상황에서 예측 가능한 반응이 나와야 합니다.
(강한 공을 블록했을 때 공이 죽어 버리면 안 됩니다.)
3. 공이 바뀐 이후로 회전량이 중요해 졌습니다.
에티카는 타 러버보다 더 많은 회전량을 목표로 개발되었습니다.
에티카는 탁구대에 바짝 붙어서 플레이할 때나, 혹은 떨어져서 플레이할 때 등 모든 상황에서
더 많은 회전을 가지고 있음을 증명해야 합니다.
4. 현대적인 탁구는 대상 플레이가 중요해 졌습니다.
선수들은 탁구대에 바짝 붙어서 더 빠른 박자와 순간적인 동작으로 게임을 압도하려고 합니다.
그러므로 에티카는 대상 플레이에서 안정성과 강한 공격력을 보여 주어야 합니다.
When I developed this rubber, all of those factors were carefully considered and checked along the way. Samples followed, and experienced testers thoroughly demoed the each and every rubber candidate. I was lucky to conduct this testing process in Korea, because I could get help from Joo Sae Hyuk and Samsung players. As a sponsor, this privilege was shared with Li-Ning. But in the end, it became a resource for Nexy’s new rubber — ETIKA.
러버를 개발하는 과정에서 이 4가지 사안들은 주의깊게 점검되어 왔습니다.
여러 샘플들이 만들어 지면서 하나 하나 점검되었습니다.
이 과정을 한국에서 진행하게 된 것은 어떻게 보면 행운입니다.
저는 주세혁 선수와 삼성 선수들의 도움을 받을 수 있었습니다.
After a long development and testing period, I am extremely excited and proud to introduce our new rubber, ETIKA, which shows more spin, a higher arc, and longer trajectory in comparison to rival rubbers of similar design.
Recently, I received good news from our German testing center, who gave this rubber to their highest level players. Those who regularly play with Japanese rubbers believe ETIKA is better than other similar rubbers. I am afraid that this cannot be confirmed by lower level players because this rubber design is intended for professional level players. But if you are an amateur who is determined to elevate your level of play, give this rubber a try!

오랜 개발과 테스팅 기간을 통해서 완성된 에티카 러버를 출시하게 되어 매우 기쁩니다.
에티카는 유사 러버군들에 비해서 더 많은 회전량과 더 높은 궤적, 그리고 더 긴 송구 거리를 가지고 있습니다.
최근에 저는 독일의 테스팅 센터를 통해
세계 정상급 선수들이 이 러버를 매우 좋아하고 있다는 이야기를 들을 수 있었습니다.
테너지 러버를 사용하던 선수들은 매우 비슷하면서도 조금 더 강력한 러버라고 평하고 있습니다.
저는 아마추어 동호인 여러분들께서 이 의견에 동의할지 조금 걱정은 됩니다.
