최근 NCAA 명문, UCLA가 실력 있는 유럽 선수들을 데려오고 있다는 소식을 올리고자 글을 씁니다. 사실 저도 UCLA가 이렇게 유럽 선수 영입에 대해 적극적일 줄은 꿈에도 몰랐습니다.
UCLA 이야기를 시작하기 전에, UCLA와 같은 컨퍼런스(Pac-12) 라이벌 팀인 애리조나 대학 이야기를 한 번 해보자면,
과거 곤자가 대학의 어시스턴트 코치였던 타미 로이드 현 감독이 2021년 4월, 션 밀러 전 감독의 후임으로 부임하면서, 더욱 더 적극적이고, 공격적으로 ‘유럽, 비미국 선수들 리쿠르팅’에 나서고 있는 중입니다.

먼저 UCLA는 2022년 세계 U17 월드컵에서 프랑스를 4강에 올린 주역인 2005년생, 일란 피블로일(198cm)을 데려왔습니다.

그리고 UCLA는 유럽 출신의 ‘전학생’도 받았습니다. 바로 세르비아의 라자르 스테파노비치(201cm)가 그 주인공입니다.
볼 핸들러, 윙 포지션을 맡을 수 있는 2002년생 스테파노비치는 유타대에서 2년간 뛰었으며, 2학년 때는 대학 들어와서 처음으로 평균 두 자리 득점(10.3점)을 기록했습니다.
스테파노비치는 2021년 U19 월드컵에서 마이애미 히트의 니콜라 요비치(208cm)와 함께 세르비아를 4위에 올려놓은 주역이기도 합니다.

그리고 여기에 그치지 않고, UCLA는 ‘유럽 주니어 팀(U18)들의 유로리그’인 2023 ANGT(아디다스 넥스트 제너레이션 토너먼트) 파이널에서 소속팀, 레알 마드리드 주니어 팀을 우승으로 이끌며, MVP를 받은 슬로베니아 출신, 장신 메인 볼 핸들러, 2004년생 *얀 비데(198cm)까지 품었습니다.

그러나 UCLA는 여기서 유럽 선수 영입을 그칠 생각은 없어 보이고, 더 나아가 2024년 NBA 드래프트에서 로터리를 노릴만한 재능인 진짜 유럽산 ‘빅 네임’(Big Name)까지 노리고 있습니다. 스페인의 221cm 빅맨, 아데이 마라가 그 주인공입니다.

Simović served as the sports director for CB Espacio Torrelodones of the Spanish EBA League (level 4) from 2007 to 2015, where he landed some of the top players in Madrid throughout his time there.
