그 해. 11월. 출판사의 기획과 권유도 있었고 그동안 틈틈이 체이스를 그리며 쓴 글들을 정리하고 교정을 마치자 미정은 사랑 글이 담긴 책을 출간하였다. ‘바람 같은 사랑’그녀는 그렇게 제목을 하고 싶었다. 그 사랑시 책 제목은 ‘바람 같은 사랑’ 이되었다. 그녀도 세월의 흐름에 편승하여야 했다. 그러나 그 글들은 가슴속에 그렇게 남겨두고 싶었지만, 그렇게 하질 못하였다. 출판사는 돈 되겠다 하는 글은 어떻게 해서든 책으로 만들어 출간하여 독자들에게 팔아야 돈이 되는 것을 잘 알고 있었다.
그 며칠 전에 체이스는 파랑새 출판사를 통하여 단편 추리를 모아 한 권의 단편 추리 소설책을 출간하였다. 다행히 두 사람이 출간한 책은 독자들로부터 좋은 반응을 얻으며 인기리에 팔렸으며, 두 개의 각기 다른 출판사는 공교롭게도 그 해 12월 20일 일요일을 독자와 만나는 싸인회 날로 잡고 있었다.
현주는 타스마니아에서 체이스를 만났다. 그는 몇 년 전에 보았을 때 보다 더 초췌하였으며 그는 사랑과 싸우고 있었다. 그는 불우한 사람이었다. 온갖 풍상을 겪은 노병 같았다. 그러나 그의 영혼은 현주가 만난 누구보다도 맑았다. 삶의 전사인 그의 이면에 잠자고 있는 맑은 영혼을 그녀는 느꼈다. 그는 지쳐가고 있었다. 그 힘듦을 오직 글 쓰는 것으로 버티고 있었다. 그는 구두닦이었다. 그 나이에 토론토에서 구두를 닦고 있었다. 그는 그 일에 혼신의 힘을 다하고 있었다. 고독을 그렇게 견디어 내고 있었다. 캐나다의 한인 중 그 누구도 그를 아는 사람은 없다고 하였다. 토론토의 그 누구도 그를 아는 사람은 없다고 하였다. 자칫 분에 넘칠 것 같은 그의 사랑의 대상이 조미정 시인이었고 그는 그녀를 만나고부터 운명을 믿고 기다리고 있다고 하였다. 그는 말했다. 숙명은 뒤에서 오기 때문에 어쩔 수없이 받아야 하지만, 운명은 앞에서 오므로 받든지 모른 척 거부하든지 할 수 있다 하였다. 그러나 그는 그 운명을 받았다 하였다. 온 가슴으로. 그에게는 틀림없이 분에 넘치는 과분한 사랑임을 안다 하였다. 그동안의 치열한 사랑 이야기를 감동으로 듣고 왔다. 또한 그녀는 성태와 함께 조미정을 만나 같은 내용의 이야기를 듣고 각본을 만들어 12월 19일 토요일 날 단편 드라마로 만들어 방영하기로 회사에서 결정하였다. 제목은 ‘운명’으로 하였다. 그러나 방영 후까지는 두 사람에게 서로의 연락처를 알려주지 않기로 하였다. 극적인 만남을 만들기 위하여서 이었다. 현주는 스스로가 견디어 내기 위하여 잔인해졌다고 성태에게 말하며 눈물을 흘렸다. 그와 동시 두 곳의 출판사에서도 조미정 시인의 사랑 시 시집 ‘바람 같은 사랑’ 과 체이스 리의 ‘단편 추리소설 선집’을 2쇄 하여 출간하였다.
“성태 씨. 우린 이 두 사람을 이제는 알잖아. 그런데 나는 상업적으로 그들을 이용하고 있다고 생각하니 왠지 나 자신이 미워 죽겠어. 성태 씨. 나 어떻게 하면 좋아?”
“어이구~ 드디어 열간(마음이 뜨거운 인간) 나왔네. 어서 그 판 깨시지. 그들의 운명이라는 것을 현주가 깨버려도 되겠네.”
“성태 씨~ 나는 못해. 그렇게 못해. 내가 난 무당인가. 아름다운 그 판을 내가 깨게. 왜 그래? 날 위로나 좀 해주지. 이게 장래 내 남편감 맞아?”
“그래. 알았다. 맞아. 맞아. 곧 멋진 네 남편일 내가 맞아. 현주 같은 심성이 아름다운 여자를 내게 보내 준 나도 운명에게 온몸으로 감사한다. 현주야~ 우리는 그 두 사람보다 더 아름다운 사랑을 하자. 현주 눈에 눈물 나지 않게 내가 할 거다."
“정말? 약속할 수 있어? 내 사랑 성태 씨?”
“아~ 나도 그들의 운명이 전이돼 그 속에 갇혀 버렸구나. 약속해. 그래. 약속할 수 있어. 됐어?”
11월 30일. ‘운명’ 그 드라마는 사전의 노출 광고 기법 중 하나인 시놉시스(Synopsys)의 노출에 의하여 폭발적인 인기리에 방영되었고 열화 같은 시청자들의 요청에 의하여 다시 재방영하기로 그 자리에서 방송사는 결정하였다. 잔혹한 폭력과 어쭙잖은 쎅스의 난무와 진부한 내용들을 금광(돈과 광고)으로 포장하여 독자와 시청자를 현혹하는 알갱이 없는 유행 같은 드라마와 베스트 쎌러들 속에서 이현주의 드라마 ‘운명’과 조미정 시인의 사랑시 ‘바람 같은 사랑’과 체이스리의 ‘단편 추리소설 선집’은 사랑시와 단편 추리소설이라는 새로운 장르로 숨죽이고 있던 그 장르를 깨워 살아 활동하게 만드는 촉매가 되기에 충분하였다. 출판사는 그 방영된 드라마에 편승하여 찍어 낸 책이 연일 솔드아웃(sold out) 되었다. 현주는 그녀의 능력을 재 신임 받는 아주 멋지고 훌륭한 기회가 되었다. 두 출판사는 공교롭게도 같은 날 같은 장소에서 다시 독자와의 만남이라는 판매 이벤트를 하기로 하였다. 그러나 실은 몇 개월 전 같은 날 같은 장소에서 독자와의 만남이라는 행사를 한 적이 있었다. YJK 방송사도 후속 이야기 특집을 준비하며 이현주를 담당케 하였다. 12월 20일 현주와 성태는 서울 강남의 미래 서적앞에서 그들 두 사람을 만날 준비를 하고 있었다.
12월 19일. 비서에 의하여 ‘운명’이라는 드라마를 본 남양건설 사장 정한구 회장은 급히 시인 조미정에게 전화를 했다. 그는 드라마는 픽션이라고 생각하였다. 그러나 그런 이름을 덮은 넌픽션이었다. 그 드라마는 중년의 아름다운 사랑을 운명을 빌려 완성한 드라마 작가 이현주의 가장 멋지고 훌륭한 작품이었다. 중년의 잠재한 욕망을 건드렸다. 한 번쯤 해 보고 싶은 사랑. 늦었지 않았을 것 같은 생각이 들게 하였다. 그러나 이것은 픽션이었다. 넌픽션으로 착각하도록 한 픽션이었다. 정한구도 착각하였다.
“미정 씨. 접니다. 정한구. 저녁 6시에 대전에 있는 호텔 로자리오에서 내년도 사업을 위한 설명회가 있는데 참석해 주십시오. 미정 씨의 낭송회와 시집 출간회 등에 대한 발표를 할 겁니다. 주인공이시니 꼭 참석해 주십시오. 오후 5시 00까지 차를 도착하도록 보내겠습니다. 그때 뵙겠습니다.”
정한구. 미정의 뒤에서 알게 모르게 경제적 도움을 주고 있는 스폰서 회사의 회장 아닌가. 물론 거절하고 그와의 관계를 끊어도 좋을 상황이지만, 굳이 그렇게 할 이유가 없었다. 서로 공생까지는 아니드라도 균형이 기울지 않게 필요한 역할을 잘하고 있기 때문이다. 정한구 회장에 대해서도 미정은 호감을 가지고 있었다. 아니 그가 늘 호감을 느끼도록 하였다. 조미정 시인의 독자를 위한 싸인회가 내일 미래서적에서 있다는 것도 그가 알고 있을 터이었다.
그 사업 설명회는 간단하였다. 남양건설의 내년 사업 계획에 부수적이었으나 절대 필요한 가족 확장 프로젝트 (Project of FamilyExpendable)였다. 건설과 문학이 융화하여 그린 가족(green family)을 넓혀간다는 취지였다. 철근과 콘크리트(Concrete) 속에 문예와 문학이 있고 문화가 있음을 알리는 절묘한 교합이었다. 부수적이자 필수적인 그 계획의 중간에 조미정 시인이 있었다. 미정도 충분히 이해하고 공감하였다. 마다할 이유가 전혀 없었다. 많은 시인들 중에 선택되었다는 것만도 행운이랄 수 있겠지만, 정한구 회장이 그 뒤에 그녀를 사랑하고 있었기 때문이다. 여기에 무슨 불법이 있겠는가? 여기에 무슨 특혜가 있겠는가? 정한구는 그 점에서는 깨끗하였다. 동등한 계약 위에서 그 부분의 서로 파트너였다. 사랑은 별개였다. 그는 혼돈하지 않았다. 미정의 가치를 인정하고 있다는 의미이다. 정한구 남양건설 회장이 사랑을 할.
미정이 발표회가 끝나고 몇몇 관계자와 인사를 하면서 찾았으나 그는 보이지 않았다. 궁금하고 걱정되었다.
그때 그를 보고 급히 미정을 픽업했던 비서가 다가왔다.
“정 회장님은 어디 계셔요? 인사하려는데 보이지가 않군요.”
“예. 시인님. 걱정하지 마십시오. 그렇잖아도 조미정 시인님을 모셔 오라는 말씀이 있었습니다. 같이 가시지요.”
이 사람이 미정을 차로 태워 이곳까지 데려왔다. 갈 때도 특별한 일 없으면 이 사람이 운전하는 차를 타고 가야만 하였다. 미정은 또 하나의 실수를 하였다. 체이스가 말했었다. ‘혼자 외출 시는 절대 타인의 차를 함께 타지 말라’는 것을. 택시나 기차를 타고 집으로 돌아가거나, 아니면 딸 은희의 집에서 자고 갈 수가 있을 뿐이다. 2번은 아주 긴급한 상황이 아닌 다음에야 그렇게 할 수 없고. 정한구를 만나는 것에 주저해야 할 이유가 없었다. 그 초대 자체도 역시 행운인 것을. 솔직히 말해서 그런 위치의 그가 시인이라고 아무나 그렇게 대하겠는가? 다만, 어디로 가는 것인지가 궁금했다.
