<줄거리>
1940년대, 미국은 푸에르토리코를 보호령으로 삼고 있다. 그리고 미국에들어온 푸에르토리코 출신 빈민들은 뉴욕에 제 2의 할렘을 만든다.
백인 거주지와 푸에르토리코인 거주지가 인접한 뉴욕의 웨스트 사이드에서는
앙숙인 이탈리아계의 제트단과 푸에르토리코계의 샤크단이 서로 텃세 싸움을 벌이고 있다.
어느 날 제트단의 리더 리프는 샤크단에 도전하기 위해 댄스 파티장으로 가고,
토니에게 함께 가자고 제의한다.
패싸움에 관심 없는 토니는 리프의 부탁으로 어쩔 수 없이 파티장을 찾는데, 그곳에서 아름다운 마리아에게 한눈에 반한다.
그러나 그녀는 샤크단의 리더 베르나르도의 여동생.
그날 밤 토니와 마리아는 마리아의 집 발코니에서 서로의 사랑을 확인한다.
토니는 두 그룹의 화해에 힘쓰는 한편,
마리아와의 관계를 인정받으려 하지만, 양측의 대립은 더욱 격화된다.
다음 날, 고속도로 아래에서 샤크단과 제트단의 대결이 벌어지고
토니는 마리아의 부탁으로 그들의 싸움을 말리러 간다.
그러나 리프가 베르나르도와의 결투에서 죽자 격분한 토니는 베르나르도를 죽이고 만다.
오빠를 죽인 사람이 토니라는 것을 알게된 마리아. 하지만 두 사람의 사랑은 변하지 않는다.
그러나 샤크단에서 토니를 죽이려 하는데...
