존 베일리의 기도 (21일 아침):
옳은 책을 선택하도록 마음을 인도하시고

하나님의 성령이시여, 지금 내 영혼을 찾아오시고 저녁까지 나와 함께 하옵소서. 내 모든 생각을 감화시켜 주소서. 내 모든 상상에도 함께 하여 주소서. 내 모든 결심을 암시하여 주소서. 나의 의지의 가장 깊은 곳에 거하셔서 나의 하는 모든 일을 명하소서. 내가 침묵하는 가운데 있거나 말을 하거나, 바쁜 때이거나 한가한 때이거나, 여러 사람들 가운데 있거나 홀로 있거나, 아침의 신선함이나 저녁의 피곤함에 있을 때에도 나와 함께 하소서. 언제나 나에게 은혜를 주셔서 당신의 신비한 교제 속에서 기뻐하게 하소서.
나의 심령은 제단이 되고 주님의 사랑은 불꽃이 되었습니다.(1)
보이지 않는 성령이시여, 내가 곳 마다 또한 내가 집이나 가족과 함께 있을 때에도 나와 함께 하여 주소서. 당신의 은혜가 나로 하여금 다른 이들에게 보이게 하시는 공감과 고려가 나에게 가까이 있는 사람들에게 보여 주는 일에 실패하지 않게 하소서. 내가 나그네에게 보여야할 정중함과 예의를 내 집안의 사람들에게 거부하는 일이 없게 하소서. 나의 집에서 사랑이 시작되게 하소서.
은혜로우신 하나님, 내가 오늘 책을 읽거나 신문을 보는 시간에도 나를 떠나지 마소서. 옳은 책을 선택하도록 마음을 인도하시고 택한 책을 올바른 방향으로 읽게 하소서. 내가 유익을 위해서 책을 읽을 때, 내가 읽는 모든 것이 내가 당신께 가까이 가도록 허락하소서. 내가 쉼을 얻기 위해서 책을 읽을 때, 내가 읽는 것이 나로 당신으로부터 멀어지지 않게 하소서. 나의 모든 독서가 내 마음을 새롭게 하여 더 진지하게 순수하고 올바르고 진실 한 것을 추구하게 하소서.
하나님, 내가 기도 드리는 시간에, 공중예배에 있을 때, 축복된 성례를 받을 때, 당신의 가까이 하신다는 특별한 의식을 갖게 하소서. 예수님의 이름으로 기도하옵나이다. 아멘.
O Holy Spirit of God, visit now this soul of mine, and tarry within it until eventide. Inspire all my thoughts. Pervade all my imaginations. Suggest all my decisions. Lodge in my will's most inward citadel and order all my doings. Be with me in my silence and in my speech, in my haste and in my leisure, in company and in solitude, in the freshness of the evening; and give me grace at all times to rejoice in Thy mysterious companionship.
My heart an altar, and Thy love the flame.
Accompany me to-day, O Spirit invisible, in all my goings, but stay with me also when I am in my own home and among my kindred. Forbid that I should fail to show those nearest to me the sympathy and consideration which Thy grace enables me to show others with whom I have to do. Forbid that I should refuse my own household the courtesy and politeness which I think proper to show to strangers. Let charity to-day begin at home.
Leave me not, O gracious Presence, in such hours as I may to-day devote to the reading of books or of newspapers. Guide my mind to choose the right books and, having chosen them, to read them in the right way. When I read for profit, grant that all I read may lead me nearer to Thyself. When I read for recreation, grant that what I read may not lead away from Thee. Let all my reading so refresh my mind that I may the more eagerly seek after whatsoever things are pure and fair and true.
Let me have a special sense of Thy nearness to me, O God, in such times as I may be able to devote to prayer, to any public exercise of worship, or to the receiving of the Blessed Sacrament; through Jesus Christ my Lord. Amen.
