연등축제 Lotus Lantern Festival
Every year there are many small local parades of lantern to celebrate the Buddha’s Birthday in May. As the birthday of Buddha(on the 8th day of the 4th lunar month every year) approaches, temples in each district combine their efforts to organize the annual lantern parade. Buddhists march through the streets with their lanterns in hand. The standard lantern would be shaped like a lotus flower, but Buddhists also making the ‘Soccer Ball Lantern’ to commemorate the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
해마다 5월이면 각 지역별로 부처님의 탄생을 축하하기 위한 등축제가 열린다. 부처님의 탄신일(매년 음력 4월 8일)이 다가옴에 따라 사찰들은 매년 각 지역별로 역량을 모아 등축제를 준비한다. 불자들은 손에 등을 들고 거리 행진을 한다. 전통적인 등은 연꽃모양이지만 2002년 월드컵을 맞아 ‘축구공 등’을 만들기도 했다.

연꽃은 무지를 벗고 지혜를 얻는 과정을 상징하는 일반적인 불교의 상징물이다
