단청 Tanchong, 석가모니 Sakyamuni, 대웅전 Main Hall, 대웅보전 Great Hero Hall
The Main Hall is the heart of a temple compound and so it is built with special ceremony. The Main Hall is usually called ‘Taeungbo-jon’ which means Great Hero Hall. So the central figure of the Main Hall is usually Sakyamuni. It’s called Sokamoni-bul in Korean.
대웅전은 사찰 경내의 심장부에 위치할 만큼 특별한 불교의식을 진행하기 위해 세워졌다. 대웅전은 대웅보전이라는 표현을 빌리기도 하는데, 이는 ‘위대한 영웅의 전당’이라는 뜻에서 비롯됐다. 따라서 대웅전의 정중앙에는 석가모니가 봉안되어 있다. 한국에서는 석가모니부처님이라고도 한다.
The Main Hall is greatly decorated to enhance the beauty of its architecture(대웅전은 그 자체의 건축미를 더욱 돋보이기 위해서 다양하게 장식된다). It is printed in a particular style called ‘tanchong’(여기에는 ‘단청’이라고 하는 한국불교 특유의 기법으로 그려진 그림이 있다). Up towards the roof of the Main Hall such as eaves, rafters, brackets, you will see Tanchong which means ‘red and blue’(대웅전 지붕 쪽으로 처마와 서까래, 공포 등에서 단청을 볼 수 있는데, 이는 ‘붉은색과 푸른색’이라는 뜻을 가지고 있다).
