오솔집 Osolzip

오솔집의 건축주는 8살 큰 딸, 7살 둘째 아들, 그리고 이제 막 걸음마를 뗀 막내까지, 어린 삼남매를 둔 젊은 부부다. 출퇴근 등 여러 불편함을 감수하면서까지 시골에 살겠다는 결심을 하게 된 데는 아이들을 위한 마음이 가장 컸다. 처음 집을 짓겠다고 찾아왔을때도 두 사람은 ‘아이들이 맘껏 뛰어다닐수 있는 집을 만들고 싶다’고 입을 모아 말했다. 자신들이 경험했던 유년기의 기억을 아이들에게도 고스란히 전해주고 싶다는 것이었다.

As rapid industrialization and urbanization made people flock in the cities, housing spaces have developed by focusing on quantity rather than quality. In this background, most citizens are used to saying that “My dream is to go down to the quiet countryside and live there by building a house if I earn money.”
The client who had grown as a child in this rural community wants his three children to experience such old reminiscences of his. He moved to the metropolitan Seoul for working after marriage, and now chooses to live again in the countryside for his children.

첫 미팅 후 집이 들어설 땅을 보기위해 방문했을 때, 몇몇 특이한 점이 눈에 띄었다. 땅 일부는 옆집이 텃밭으로 사용하고 있었고, 그 앞으로는 마을 사람들이 다니는 작은 길(우리는 고즈넉한 이 길을 오솔길이라 불렀다)과 이제는 쓰임을 다한 낡은 축사 한 채가 있었다. 주변을 안내해주시던 건축주의 아버지는 이 폐축사가 당신이 직접 베어온 나무로 기둥과 보를 잡고 바닥 시멘트를 시공해 지은 곳이라고 하셨다. 소 3마리로 가업을 시작했던 삶의 터전에서 자신의 아들 내외와 손자들이 살게 된 것이다.
그리고 뜻밖의 요청이 이어졌다. 대지안에 있던 텃밭과 오솔길을 마을 사람들이 계속 쓸 수 있도록 해달라는 것이었다. 대지 한 쪽을 가로지르는 오솔길이 사라지면 이웃들은 밭에 가기위해 먼 길을 돌아가야 했다. 보통은 내 땅의 면적을 최대한 확보하려고 하기 마련인데, 오히려 땅 일부를 마을 사람들에게 양보하겠다는 건축주 가족의 이야기는 오솔집을 계획하는데 큰 영감이 됐다. 한 마을에서 4대째 살아오면서 형성된 끈끈한 유대감이 있었기에 가능한 결정이었다.

There was one big issue for the site to build a house on: part of the site was being occasionally used as a passage for villagers. Giving the way out to the community should necessitate a sacrifice of much part of the site, or blocking it would probably make discomfort for the community.
Breaking through this dilemma was the client’s willing suggestion to maintain the way as it is. For the client who had lived as children in this community, the villagers signified more than the mere neighbors; they were well aware of how much significant the existing way was for the village. The way surrounded by small trees and grass we called ‘Osolgil’ or the ‘Little forest passage’, which served as a key inspiration for our design.

풀과 낮은 담의 기분 좋은 경험을 그대로 가져오기 위해 오솔길은 최소한의 범위에서 일부를 수정하고, 오솔길로 인해 버려지는 대지는 주차공간으로 활용했다.
길은 집 전체를 한 바퀴 돌면서 집과 길 사리에 ‘마당길’을 형성하는데, 이는 밖에서 끝나지 않고 집안으로 연장된다. 하나로 길게 이어지는 이 동선은 곧 집의 기능과 맞물려 길이 곧 ‘실’이 되는 독특한 구조를 만든다. 집은 각각의 기능을 둘러싼 하나의 길로 이루어지며, 그 사이사이를 관통하는 길이 형성되어 있다. 아이들은 밖으로 집 안으로, 안에서 밖으로 연결되는 이 길을 따라 자유롭게 뛰놀며 한층 풍부한 공간을 경험하게 된다.

Designing a path for the children was the key of design. In order to make the path both intuitive and variegated, we drew inspiration from the classic arcade game “Pac-Man,” whose makeup is so instantaneous and intuitive but enables unlimited imagination through various patterns in a two-dimensional structure. Likewise, we progressed with an idea that this house would be a new Pac-Man stage for children when we designed the little forest path: this two-dimensional idea extended three-dimensionally and so enabled a variety of space and function to be created at every path. After all, the children began to run about there by assuming the roles of Pac-Man and Ghosts voluntarily

현관문을 열고 안으로 들어오면 길을 따라 채워진 책장과 대청마루를 만날 수 있다. 이곳은 아이들을 위한 공부방으로, 빔프로젝터를 설치해 가족들의 시청각실로도 활용할 수 있게 했다. 이어서 화장실과 세면 공간을 지나면 거실과 중층으로 이루어진 아이들 방으로 진입한다. 마당으로 열린 이곳은 가족 모두가 가장 많은 시간을 보내게 될 공간이다. 다음으로 마주하는 옷장 문을 열면 드레스룸으로 이어지며 계속해서 주방과 식당이 있는 길을 지나 다시 처음의 현관 앞으로 이어진다. 달팽이 모양을 닮은 이 길은 처음과 끝이 연결되어있어 계속 순환되며 2층 놀이방과 다락방으로도 연장된다.

Frolicking freely along this path which flows from outside in or from inside out, the children come to experience a more variegated space. Opening the front door and coming inside, one can encounter the bookshelves along the path and the main floored room: this place was designed to serve as the children’s study room as well as the family’s audiovisual room where a beam projector was installed. Moving on through the toilet and washbasin, one can enter the living room and the mezzanine room for children: this place is open to the yard so that the family can spend most time here. Next, one can see a dress room by opening the wardrobe door, and passing through the kitchen and the dining room, meet the front door again. With the beginning turning back to the end, this path keeps circulating and extends to the play room and the loft on the upper floor. The loft leads again to the ground floor, to the living room, and to the outside: in this circulation, children run and run tirelessly.

오솔집은 보통의 주택에서 시도하기 힘든 독특한 구조의 집이다. 이는 세 아이가 자유분방하게 뛰어놀며 꿈을 키울 수 있기를 바라는 건축주 부부의 바람을 여실히 담아내고자 한 결과이기도 하다. 그 과정을 충분히 이해하고 과감한 아이디어들을 수긍해준 건축주의 용기가 있었기에 세상에 하나뿐인, 아이들을 위한 집이 완성될 수 있었다. 입주 첫날, 집 안 구석구석을 휘젓고 다니는 아이들의 모습을 본 건축주는 확신에 찬 목소리로 우리에게 소감을 전해왔다. ‘집을 짓길 정말 잘했다’고.
