일본 전통 공예의 중심지 가나자와!
17세기에 마에다 영주가 일본 전역에서 실력 있는 공예가들을 자신의 영토로 모은 이래, 가나자와는 일본 전통 공예의 중심지로 발전했습니다. 유네스코는 2009년 가나자와를 '창조 도시 네트워크'의 '크래프트＆포크 아트'로 지정했고, 2020년에는 국립 공예관을 도쿄에서 가나자와로 이전하는 등 문화예술 진흥에 힘쓰고 있습니다.
가나자와는 현재 '공예의 도시'로 불립니다. 이곳을 찾는 예술 애호가들은 상점, 갤러리, 미술관에서 수십 가지 전통 예술을 감상할 수 있으며, 숙련된 장인들이 지도하는 실습 워크숍에서 그 예술을 직접 체험할 수 있습니다.
그러나 우리네 현실은 아직 명장들의 기술, 그야말로 예술을 넘어선 경지의 솜씨를 전수하는 일조차 쉽지 않습니다. 그래서 더욱 가나자와가 부럽기만 합니다.
명장들의 기술을 전수하는 공공 교육의 장을 마련하는 일부터, 그분들의 '삶의 궤적'을 도시의 '문화 자산'으로 확산해 나가는 일까지.
인천의 거친 바닷바람을 견뎌온 명장들의 손길이, 이제 제물포의 새로운 미래를 빚어내기 위한 첫걸음을 내딛으려 합니다.

Kanazawa: the heart of traditional Japanese craftsmanship!
Ever since the Maeda lords gathered skilled artisans from across Japan to their domain in the 17th century, Kanazawa has developed into the centre of traditional Japanese craftsmanship. In 2009, UNESCO designated Kanazawa as a ‘Crafts and Folk Art’ city within the ‘Creative Cities Network’, and in 2020, the National Museum of Crafts was relocated from Tokyo to Kanazawa, reflecting the city’s commitment to promoting culture and the arts.
Kanazawa is now known as the ‘City of Crafts’. Art lovers visiting the city can admire dozens of traditional arts in shops, galleries and museums, and experience these arts first-hand in hands-on workshops led by skilled artisans.
However, in our own reality, it is still no easy task to pass on the skills of master craftsmen—skills that transcend mere artistry. This makes us all the more envious of Kanazawa.
From establishing public educational venues to pass on the skills of master craftsmen, to promoting their ‘life stories’ as the city’s ‘cultural assets’.
The hands of master craftsmen, who have weathered Incheon’s harsh sea winds, are now set to take the first step towards shaping Jemulpo’s new future.
