[언론 인터뷰] 우리가 몰라봤던 K-아트… 인천 제물포구 개항로공예공방, 임충휴 대한민국 공인 명장 ‘나전칠기’ 루브르 간다

루브르박물관 전시에 나전칠기 분야 대표로 참여하는 임충휴(77·대한민국명장 제384호) 명장을 최근 인천 중구 개항로에 있는 ‘임충휴 옻칠나전 갤러리’에서 만났다. 임 명장은 “전시 주최 측에서 고려 시대 대표적 나전칠기인 ‘고려 경함’을 복원한 작품을 원하고 있다”며 “아마도 고려 경함과 다른 대표작 하나를 전시하게 될 것 같다”고 말했다. 이어 “주최 측에 나전칠기 작품이 영구적으로 전시될 수 있도록 기증하겠다는 의사도 밝혔고, 주최 측이 검토하겠다고 회신했다”고 했다.


임 명장의 작품은 해외에서 더 인정받고 있다. 임 명장은 이탈리아, 독일, 일본 등지에서 전시회에 참여했다. 세계적인 명품 보석 브랜드는 한국에서 고가의 보석을 구매할 경우 임 명장이 만든 옥빛 보석함에 넣어 고객에게 전달하고 있다. 국내 굴지의 대기업에서도 외국 협력사 손님에게 선물하기 위한 나전칠기를 임 명장에게 의뢰한다.


임 명장은 최근 ‘옻칠나전전승교육협회’를 창립하고 회장을 맡아 전승·교육 확대에도 힘쓰고 있다. 멀리 영국에서도 인천에서 열린 협회 창립총회에 찾아왔다.

We recently met Master Craftsman Im Chung-hyu (77, Korea’s 384th Master Craftsman), who is participating in the Louvre exhibition as a representative of the lacquerware field, at the ‘Im Chung-hyu Lacquer and Mother-of-Pearl Gallery’ on Gaehang-ro in Jung-gu, Incheon. Master Lim stated, “The exhibition organisers are requesting a restored version of the ‘Goryeo Jewellery Box’, a representative piece of Goryeo-era mother-of-pearl lacquerware,” adding, “It seems likely that I will exhibit this alongside another representative work.” He continued, “I have also expressed my intention to donate the lacquerware pieces so that they may be permanently displayed, and the organisers have replied that they will consider the proposal.”


Master Lim’s work is gaining greater recognition overseas. He has participated in exhibitions in Italy, Germany and Japan. A world-renowned luxury jewellery brand presents high-value jewellery purchased in Korea to customers in jade-coloured jewellery boxes crafted by Master Lim. Leading domestic conglomerates also commission Master Lim to create mother-of-pearl lacquerware as gifts for guests from their foreign partners.


Master Lim recently founded the ‘Lacquer and Mother-of-Pearl Inlay Heritage Education Association’ and serves as its president, striving to expand the transmission and education of this craft. People even travelled from as far afield as the UK to attend the association’s inaugural general meeting held in Incheon.
