Small Acts, Real Connections
Looking back on the past few months, I have come to realize that kindness rarely announces itself. It appears quietly, in a bent-down moment, a two-second decision, or a hand placed gently on someone’s shoulder.
One afternoon, walking through the park near my apartment, I noticed a trail of litter scattered along the path: a crumpled coffee cup, a plastic wrapper, a torn receipt. I did not have gloves or a bag with me, but I picked them up anyway and carried them to the nearest bin. Nobody saw me do it, and that, in a way, felt like the point. It was a small act, almost embarrassingly small, but there was something clarifying about it, a quiet reminder that the world I walk through is one I share with others.
On a separate occasion, I found a bank card lying face-up on the floor of a subway station, clearly dropped by someone in a rush. Rather than leaving it where it was, I picked it up and placed it upright against the fare machine, somewhere visible and easy to spot. I never found out whether the owner returned for it, but the possibility that they did was enough.
I also spent two Saturdays volunteering at a local food bank, sorting donated goods alongside a group of strangers who quickly became easy company. The work was repetitive, checking expiration dates, organizing shelves, carrying boxes, but the rhythm of it was unexpectedly grounding. By the end of each shift, I felt more settled than when I had arrived.
What stayed with me most, however, was not something I gave but something I received. During a period when I was struggling, quieter than usual and a little withdrawn, a classmate I was not particularly close to sat beside me and said, simply, that she was there if I needed her. She did not press for an explanation. She just stayed. I had not realized until that moment how much it could mean to be seen by someone, without being asked to account for yourself.
I have since come to believe that giving and receiving are not opposites. They are the same impulse, facing different directions.
