[Lead-in]
1. A simple gesture of kindness stopped (by) a robbery in the U.S. Police
say a gunman crashed a dinner party with a intent to rob, but ended up sipping
wine with the guests instead. Zane Verjee has more on the crime that turned into
a group hug.
[Story]
2. Xavier Cervera took his dog out for a walk
as his guests were winding down a dinner party last month on his patio,
sipping French wine and nibbling cheese. Almost as soon as Xavier left
his party was crashed by an armed hooded gunman, who bust through an open patio
door.
3. The intruder pressed his gun against a 14-year old’s head,
saying “Give me your money or I’ll start shooting.” Then Xavier’s guests did
something extraordinary.
“They offered him some food and wine, which he
accepted, which I assume really helps. Hahaha.”
That the wine or the
cheese?
“Probably the both. But maybe the wine more so.”
4. Then
some one hit the sore spot.
“One of them said to him your mother
would be ashamed of you. And apparently that really toned him down. He became a
little morose upon hearing that. He said his mother was longer alive.”
5. The attacker took down his hood, had a little bit more of wine,
helped himself to some cheese, then he tucked away his gun and looked
around, and said ‘Maybe I’ve come to the wrong place.’ William Chambliss is a
professor of sociology at George Washington University and says that comment by
the gunman was revealing.

“ ‘I think I came to the wrong place.’ Hahaha. He came to the
wrong place because his people were so nice. And because they treated him like a
human being he couldn’t really go through with the robbery.”

Chambliss says treating the gunman with the dignity was the key. And for the
intruder getting hugs was important too. First he wanted individual hugs, then a
group hug. And after the group hug he just turned around and left just, the same
way he came.
“Yes, thanked them again and apologized again, and went on
his way.”
7. Police told the Washington Post it was strange but true. A
suspect still hasn’t been found, only the crystal glass he left with. Zane

집으로 들어섰습니다.
3. 강도는 14세 소년의 머리에 총을 겨눈 후 돈을 주지 않으면 당장 쏘겠다고 소리를 질렀습니다. 손님들은
예상치 못한 반응을 보였습니다.
"손님들은 강도에게 음식과 와인을 권했습니다. 강도는 선의를 받아들였고 이게 도움이 됐죠."
와인이요, 아님 치즈요?
"둘 다겠죠. 와인의 영향이 더 크겠군요."
4. 이 후, 누군가 아픈 곳을
건드렸습니다.
"손님 중 한 명이 '어머니에게 죄송하지도 않냐'고 말했습니다. 이 말 때문에 강도의 경계가 무너진 것 같습니다.
슬픈 얼굴을 하던 그가 '어머니는 돌아가셨다'고 말했답니다."
5. 강도는 모자를 내리고 치즈를 곁들여 와인을 더 마신 후, 총을
한 쪽으로 치우고 주변을 둘러보며 잘못 찾아온 것 같다고 말했습니다. 윌리엄 챔블리스 조지워싱턴대 사회학 교수는 강도의 말에 의미가 깊다고
밝혔습니다.

"'잘못 찾아온 것 같다'는 말이 의미심장하죠. 사람들이 다 친절하고
자신을 같은 사람으로 대해주니까 차마 강도 짓을 할 수 없었던 겁니다."
6. 챔블리스 교수는 강도를 인격적으로 대하는 게
중요하다고 말합니다. 이번 경우는 포옹도 중요했습니다. 강도는 손님들 각자와 포옹을 한 후, 다 함께 포옹을 했습니다. 그 다음에는 왔던 길로
다시 나갔나요?
"네, 고맙다고 인사하고 사과하면서 나갔습니다."
7. 경찰은 워싱턴 포스트 지에서 기이하지만 실제
사건이 맞다고 밝혔습니다. 용의자는 아직 체포되지 않았습니다. 그가 마셨던 와인 잔만 남았을 뿐입니다.
