-매일 아침 훈독 말씀 1423-

<어디로 가야 하느냐?- Where am I head­ing?>

내가 왜 왔으며, 내가 왜 살아야 하며, 어디로 가야 하느냐?

태어난 것을 여러분 스스로 태어난 것으로 생각해서는 안 됩니다.

태어나기는 했으되 무슨 동기로 태어났으며, 무엇을 위해 태어났는지, 나를 낳게 한 동기와 목적을 알지 못하는 우리들입니다.

나기는 났으되 내가 나고자 해서 난 것이 아니요, 살기는 살되 내가 살고자 해서 사는 것이 아니요, 죽기는 죽되 내가 죽고자 하여 죽는 것이 아니라는 것입니다.

그런데 자기를 들어 무엇을 자랑할 것이냐?

자기 자신이 나고 싶어 나지도 못하고 자기 자신의 그 무엇을 갖고 살지도 못하고, 죽음길을 피할 수도 없는 자신을 가지고 무엇을 자랑해 보아야 처량할 뿐입니다.

났으니 살아야 할 운명이요, 또 그렇게 살다 가야 할 운명입니다. (7-178)

지금 우리는 알든 모르든 어느 곳을 향하여 가고 있습니다.

내가 움직이는 시간에도 가고 있는 것이요, 쉬고 있는 시간에도 가고 있는 것입니다.

비단 나뿐이 아니고 이 민족, 혹은 이 세계, 더 나아가 하늘과 땅까지도 어떠한 곳을 향하여 지금 가고 있는 것입니다.

이것은 부인할 수 없는 사실입니다.

이 일생을 거친 후에 나는 어떠한 곳으로 갈 것인가?

이것이 인간들이 해결해야 할 중요한 문제입니다. 

종교도 이 문제를 해결하기 위하여, 철학도 역사도 이 문제를 해결하기 위하여 동원돼 있습니다.

그러니 여러분 자신도 이런 운세에 사로잡혀 이끌려 가고 있다는 것을 부인할 수 없는 것입니다. (8-194)

<어디로 가야 하느냐?- Where am I heading?>

Why was I brought into this world? Why do I have to live? Where am I head­ing?

You should never allow yourself to think that you were born by your own will.

You were born into this world, yet you do not know the source and purpose behind your birth. You are ignorant of the motivation and purpose of your being.

In other words, we were born in spite of our wishes. We live notwith­standing our wishes, and we die not­withstanding our wishes.

Then what is there to be proud of?

We have no control over our birth; we are merely custodians in this life, and we cannot avoid the path of death. Thus, any attempt to take pride in ourselves is pitiable.

Once born, we are destined to live and destined to die. (7-178, 1959.9.6)

We are moving towards a certain place whether we know it or not.

We are heading towards that place even as we work and even as we rest.

Not only ourselves, but this nation, this world and furthermore, heaven and earth are going towards a certain place as well.

This is an undeniable fact.

To what kind of place will we go at the end of this life?

This is a very important question that humankind must resolve.

Through reli­gion, philosophy and historical studies, people have mobilized to solve this ques­tion.

Therefore, you cannot deny that all of you are caught up in this and are pulled by this destiny. (8-194, 1959.12.20)
