I am at home. Fear is the stranger here.
나는 집에 있다. 이곳에서 두려움은 낯선 존재다.
1 Fear is a stranger to the ways of love. Identify with fear, and you will be a stranger to yourself. And thus you are unknown to you. What is your Self remains an alien to the part of you which thinks that it is real but different from yourself. Who could be sane in such a circumstance? Who but a madman could believe he is what he is not and judge against himself?
1. 사랑의 길에 두려움은 낯선 존재다. 네가 두려움과 동일시한다면, 너 자신에게 낯선 존재가 될 것이다. 따라서 너는 너 자신에게 알려지지 않는다. 자신은 실제지만 너 자신과는 다르다고 생각하는 너의 부분에게, 너의 자아는 이질적인 존재로 남아있다. 이러한 상황에서 누가 제정신일 수 있겠는가? 미치광이 외에 그 누가 자신은 자신의 정체가 아닌 것이라고 믿으면서 자기 자신에게 반하는 판단을 내릴 수 있겠는가?
2 There is a stranger in our midst who comes from an idea so foreign to the truth he speaks a different language, looks upon a world truth does not know, and understands what truth regards as senseless. Stranger yet, he does not recognize to whom he comes and yet maintains his home belongs to him, while he is alien now who is at home.
2. 우리 가운데 진리와는 아주 동떨어진 아이디어에서 오는 낯선 존재가 있다. 그는 다른 언어로 말하고, 진리가 모르는 세상을 바라보며, 진리가 의미 없다고 여기는 것을 이해한다. 더욱 이상하게도 그 낯선 존재는 자신이 누구에게 왔는지도 모르면서 그의 집이 자기 것이라고 주장한다. 하지만 그는 지금 집에 있는 자에게 생소한 존재다.
3 And yet how easy it would be to say, "This is my home. Here I belong and will not leave because a madman says I must." What reason is there for not saying this? What could the reason be except that you had asked this stranger in to take your place and let you be a stranger to yourself? No one would let himself be dispossessed so needlessly unless he thought there was another home more suited to his tastes.
3. 그럼에도 불구하고, “이곳은 나의 집이다. 여기는 내가 있을 곳이며, 나는 미치광이가 떠나라고 명한다고 해서 떠나지 않을 것이다.”라고 말하기는 얼마나 쉬운지! 이렇게 말하지 않을 어떤 이유가 있는가? 네가 그 낯선 존재에게 들어와 너의 자리를 차지하라고 요청하고, 정작 너는 너 자신에게 낯선 존재가 되게 한 것 외에 어떤 이유가 있겠는가? 자신의 구미에 더 잘 맞는 다른 집이 있다고 생각한 것이 아닌 한, 그 누구도 자신이 쓸데없이 내쫓기도록 허용하지는 않을 것이다.
4 Who is the stranger? Is it fear or you that is unsuited to the home which God provided for His Son? Is fear His own, created in His likeness? Is it fear that love completes and is completed by? There is no home can shelter love and fear. They cannot coexist. If you are real, then fear must be illusion. And if fear is real, then you do not exist at all.
4. 누가 그 낯선 존재인가? 하느님이 당신의 아들을 위해 제공하신 집에 걸맞지 않은 자가 두려움인가, 아니면 너인가? 두려움이 과연 하느님과 닮게 창조된 하느님의 아들인가? 사랑이 완성하는 것이 두려움이며, 사랑이 두려움에 의해 완성되는가? 사랑과 두려움을 함께 보호해 줄 수 있는 집은 없다. 사랑과 두려움은 공존할 수 없다. 네가 실제라면, 두려움은 분명 환상일 것이다. 두려움이 실제라면, 너는 존재하지도 않는다.
5 How simply, then, the question is resolved. Who fears has but denied himself and said, "I am the stranger here. And so I leave my home to one more like me than myself and give him all I thought belonged to me." Now is he exiled of necessity, not knowing who he is, uncertain of all things but this—that he is not himself and that his home has been denied to him.
5. 그렇다면 이 질문은 너무도 간단히 해결된다. 두려워하는 자는 단지 자기 자신을 부정하고, “이곳에서 나는 낯선 존재다. 따라서 나 자신보다 더 나를 닮은 자에게 내 집을 맡기고, 내 것이라고 생각한 것을 전부 주어버린다.”라고 말한 것이다. 이제 그는 어쩔 수 없이 추방되어서 자신이 누구인지도 모르고, 자신이 자기 자신이 아니며 자신의 집에 들어갈 수 없다는 것 외에는 아무것도 확신하지 못한다.
6 What does he search for now? What can he find? A stranger to himself can find no home wherever he may look, for he has made return impossible. His way is lost except a miracle will search him out and show him that he is no stranger now. The miracle will come. For in his home his Self remains. It asked no stranger in and took no alien thought to be Itself. And It will call its own unto Itself, in recognition of what is Its own.
6. 이제 그는 무엇을 구하는가? 그는 무엇을 발견할 수 있는가? 자기 자신에게 낯선 존재는 어디를 바라보든 집을 찾을 수 없다. 그는 돌아가는 것을 불가능하게 만들었기 때문이다. 기적이 그를 찾아내서 그가 이제 낯선 존재가 아님을 보여주지 않는 한, 그는 길을 잃은 것이다. 하지만 기적은 올 것이다. 그의 집 안에, 그의 자아가 남아있기 때문이다. 그의 자아는 어떤 낯선 존재도 불러들이지 않았으며, 어떤 이질적인 생각도 그 자신으로 여기지 않았다. 그리고 그의 자아는 무엇이 자신의 것인지 인식하면서, 자신의 것을 그 자신에게 불러들일 것이다.
7 Who is the stranger? Is he not the one your Self calls not? You are unable now to recognize this stranger in your midst, for you have given him your rightful place. Yet is your Self as certain of Its own as God is of His Son. He cannot be confused about creation. He is sure of what belongs to Him. No stranger can be interposed between His knowledge and His Son's reality. He does not know of strangers. He is certain of His Son.
7. 누가 낯선 존재인가? 너의 자아가 부르지 않는 자가 아닌가? 너는 지금 너의 한가운데에 있는 그 낯선 존재를 인식하지 못한다. 너는 그에게 너의 정당한 자리를 내줬기 때문이다. 하지만 하느님이 당신의 아들을 확신하시듯, 너의 자아도 자신의 것을 확신한다. 하느님은 창조물에 대해 혼동하실 수 없다. 하느님은 당신께 속하는 것에 대해 확신하신다. 하느님의 앎과 그분 아들의 실재 사이에는 어떤 낯선 존재도 끼어들 수 없다. 하느님은 낯선 존재를 모르신다. 하느님은 당신의 아들에 대해 확신하신다.
8 God's certainty suffices. Who He knows to be His Son belongs where He has set His Son forever. He has answered you who ask, "Who is the stranger?" Hear His Voice assure you, quietly and sure, that you are not a stranger to your Father, nor is your Creator stranger made to you. Whom God has joined remains forever one, at home in Him, no stranger to Himself.
8. 하느님의 확신으로 족하다. 하느님이 당신의 아들로 아시는 자는 하느님이 당신의 아들을 영원히 두신 곳에 속한다. 하느님은 “누가 낯선 존재인가?”라고 묻는 너에게 이미 응답하셨다. 하느님의 음성이 너에게, 다음과 같이 조용하고도 확고하게 보장하는 말을 들어라: 너는 너의 아버지께 낯선 존재가 아니며, 너의 창조주도 너에게 낯선 존재가 되시지 않았다. 하느님이 결합하신 자들은 영원히 하나로 남아있다. 그들은 하느님 안의 집에 있으며, 그분께 낯선 존재가 아니다.
9 Today we offer thanks that Christ has come to search the world for what belongs to Him. His vision sees no strangers, but beholds His own and joyously unites with them. They see Him as a stranger, for they do not recognize themselves. Yet as they give Him welcome, they remember. And He leads them gently home again where they belong.
9. 오늘 우리는 그리스도가 자신에게 속한 것을 찾으려고 세상에 온 것에 대해 감사한다. 그의 비전은 어떤 낯선 존재도 보지 않으며, 오로지 자신의 것들만 바라보고는 그들과 기쁘게 연합한다. 그들은 그리스도를 낯선 존재로 본다. 그들은 자기 자신을 알아보지 못하기 때문이다. 하지만 그들이 그리스도를 반가이 맞아들임에 따라, 자기 자신을 기억하게 된다. 그리스도는 그들을 부드럽게 인도하여 그들이 본래 속한 집으로 다시 데려간다.
10 Not one does Christ forget. Not one He fails to give you to remember that your home may be complete and perfect as it was established. He has not forgotten you. But you will not remember Him until you look on all as He does. Who denies his brother is denying Him and thus refusing to accept the gift of sight by which his Self is clearly recognized, his home remembered, and salvation come.
10. 그리스도는 단 한 명도 잊지 않는다. 그리스도는 단 한 명도 빼먹지 않고 너에게 데려옴으로써, 너의 집은 지어진 그대로 완전하고 완벽하다는 것을 기억할 수 있게 한다. 그리스도는 너를 잊지 않았다. 하지만 네가 모든 이를 그리스도가 보듯이 보기 전에는, 그리스도를 기억하지 못할 것이다. 자신의 형제를 부정하는 자는 그리스도를 부정하는 것이며, 따라서 시각의 선물을 받아들이기를 거부하는 것이다. 그러한 선물로 인해 그의 자아가 분명히 인식되고, 그의 집이 기억되며, 구원이 오거늘….
