There is no death. The Son of God is free.
죽음은 없다. 하느님의 아들은 자유롭다.
1 Death is a thought which takes on many forms, often unrecognized. It may appear as sadness, fear, anxiety, or doubt; as anger, faithlessness, and lack of trust; concern for bodies, envy, and all forms in which the wish to be as you are not may come to tempt you. All such thoughts are but reflections of the worshipping of death as savior and as giver of release.
1. 죽음은 많은 형식을 취하는 하나의 생각이며, 그 형식은 종종 인식되지 않는다. 죽음은 슬픔이나 두려움, 불안이나 의심으로 나타날 수 있으며, 분노나 불신, 신뢰의 결핍으로 나타날 수도 있다. 그리고 몸에 대한 걱정이나 질투, 너 자신이 아닌 것으로 존재하려는 소망이 너를 유혹하려고 일어나는 온갖 형식으로 나타날 수도 있다. 이러한 모든 생각은 단지 죽음을 구원자요 해방자로 숭배하고 있음을 보여주는 것들이다.
2 Embodiment of fear, the host of sin, god of the guilty, and the lord of all illusions and deceptions, does the thought of death seem mighty. For it seems to hold all living things within its withered hand; all hopes and wishes in its blighting grasp. All goals perceived but in its sightless eyes. The frail, the helpless, and the sick bow down before its image, thinking it alone is real, inevitable, worthy of their trust. For it alone will surely come.
2. 두려움의 화신, 죄의 숙주, 죄의식의 신, 모든 환상과 기만의 군주인 죽음의 생각은 과연 막강해 보인다. 죽음은 자신의 앙상한 손에 살아있는 만물을 움켜쥐고서, 모든 희망과 소망의 싹을 꺾어버리는 듯하기 때문이다. 모든 목표는 단지 죽음의 보지 못하는 눈으로 지각될 뿐이다. 나약하고 무기력하고 병든 자들은 죽음의 이미지 앞에 머리를 조아리면서, 오로지 죽음만이 실제고 불가피하며 신뢰할 만하다고 생각한다. 오로지 죽음만이 확실히 올 것이기 때문이다.
3 All things but death are seen to be unsure, too quickly lost however hard to gain, uncertain in their outcome, apt to fail the hopes they once engendered and to leave the taste of dust and ashes in their wake in place of aspirations and of dreams. But death is counted on. For it will come with certain footsteps when the time has come for its arrival. It will never fail to take all life as hostage to itself.
3. 죽음을 제외한 모든 것은 불확실하고, 아무리 어렵게 얻어도 너무나 빨리 잃게 되며, 그 결과도 불확실하고, 한때 불러일으킨 희망도 걸핏하면 저버려서 그것들이 지나간 자리엔 열망과 꿈 대신에 먼지와 재의 자취만 남기는 듯하다. 하지만 죽음은 믿을 만하다. 죽음은 등장할 시간이 되면 확실한 걸음으로 다가올 것이기 때문이다. 죽음은 모든 생명을 어김없이 자신의 인질로 만들 것이다.
4 Would you bow down to idols such as this? Here is the strength and might of God Himself perceived within an idol made of dust. Here is the opposite of God proclaimed as lord of all creation, stronger than God's Will for life, the endlessness of love and Heaven's perfect, changeless constancy. Here is the Will of Father and of Son defeated finally and laid to rest beneath the headstone death has placed upon the body of the holy Son of God.
4. 너는 이와 같은 우상들에게 고개를 숙이려는가? 여기 먼지로 만든 우상에서 하느님의 힘과 권능이 지각된다. 여기서 하느님의 반대가 모든 창조물의 군주라고 선포된다. 그것은 생명에 대한 하느님의 뜻, 끝없는 사랑, 천국의 완벽하고 변함없는 항구성보다 더 강하다. 여기서 아버지와 아들의 뜻이 마침내 꺾여, 죽음이 하느님의 거룩한 아들 몸 위에 세운 비석 아래 묻힌다.
5 Unholy in defeat, he has become what death would have him be. His epitaph, which death itself has written, gives no name to him, for he has passed to dust. It says but this: "Here lies a witness God is dead." And this it writes again and still again, while all the while its worshippers agree, and kneeling down with foreheads to the ground, they whisper fearfully that it is so.
5. 패배하여 거룩하지 않게 된 그는 죽음이 바라는 대로 되었다. 죽음이 직접 작성한 비문에 그의 이름은 없다. 그는 죽어서 먼지가 되어버렸기 때문이다. 그의 비문은 다만 이러하다: “여기에 하느님의 죽음을 입증하는 증인이 묻혀있다.” 죽음은 이 비문을 다시 또다시 쓰며, 그러는 동안 죽음의 숭배자들은 그 비문에 동의하여 무릎을 꿇고 머리를 조아리면서, 겁에 질린 목소리로 그 말이 옳다고 속삭인다.
6 It is impossible to worship death in any form and still select a few you would not cherish and would yet avoid while still believing in the rest. For death is total. Either all things die or else they live and cannot die. No compromise is possible. For here again we see an obvious position which we must accept if we be sane; what contradicts one thought entirely can not be true unless its opposite is proven false.
6. 어떤 형식으로든 죽음을 숭배하면서, 네가 좋아하지 않아 피하려는 죽음의 형식은 골라내고 나머지는 여전히 믿는 것은 불가능하다. 왜냐하면, 죽음은 총체적이기 때문이다. 모든 것은 죽거나, 그렇지 않으면 살아있으면서 죽을 수 없거나 둘 중 하나다. 어떤 절충안도 불가능하다. 여기서 우리는 다시, 제정신이라면 받아들일 수밖에 없는 분명한 명제를 본다: 어떤 생각을 완전히 부정하는 것은, 그것의 역逆이 거짓이라고 증명되지 않는 한 참일 수 없다.
7 The idea of the death of God is so preposterous that even the insane have difficulty in believing it. For it implies that God was once alive and somehow perished, killed, apparently, by those who did not want him to survive. Their stronger will could triumph over His, and so eternal life gave way to death. And with the Father died the Son as well.
7. 하느님의 죽음이라는 아이디어는 너무도 터무니없어서, 심지어 정신 나간 자들도 믿기 어려워한다. 그것은 하느님이 한때 살아계셨지만, 하느님의 생존을 원하지 않은 자들에 의해 어떻게든 생명이 소실되고 죽임을 당했음을 함축하기 때문이다. 그들의 더 강력한 뜻이 하느님의 뜻을 이길 수 있었으며, 따라서 영원한 생명이 죽음에게 길을 내주었다. 아들도 아버지와 함께 죽었다.
8 Death's worshippers may be afraid. And yet can thoughts like these be fearful? If they saw that it is only this which they believed, they would be instantly released. And you will show them this today. There is no death, and we renounce it now in every form for their salvation and our own as well. God made not death. Whatever form it takes must therefore be illusion. This the stand we take today. And it is given us to look past death and see the light beyond.
8. 죽음의 숭배자들은 물론 두려워할 수 있다. 하지만 이러한 생각들이 과연 두려울 수 있겠는가? 자신이 믿은 것이 단지 이것일 뿐임을 본다면, 그들은 즉시 해방될 것이다. 너는 오늘 그들에게 이것을 보여줄 것이다. 죽음은 없다. 그리고 이제 우리는 그들의 구원과 우리 자신의 구원을 위해 모든 형식의 죽음을 포기한다. 하느님은 죽음을 만들지 않으셨다. 그러므로 죽음이 어떤 형식을 취하든, 그것은 환상일 수밖에 없다. 오늘 우리는 바로 이러한 입장을 취한다. 우리는 죽음을 간과하고 그 너머의 빛을 볼 수 있다:
9 Our Father, bless our eyes today. We are Your messengers, and we would look upon the glorious reflection of Your Love which shines in everything. We live and breathe in You alone. We are not separate from Your eternal life. There is no death, for death is not Your Will. And we abide where You have placed us, in the Life we share with You and with all living things, to be like You and part of You forever. We accept Your Thoughts as ours, and our will is one with Yours eternally. Amen.
9. 아버지, 오늘 우리의 눈을 축복하소서. 우리는 당신의 메신저로서, 만물에서 빛나는 당신 사랑의 영광스러운 반영을 바라보고자 합니다. 우리는 오로지 당신 안에서만 살고 숨을 쉽니다. 우리는 당신의 영원한 생명과 분리되어 있지 않습니다. 죽음은 없습니다. 죽음은 당신의 뜻이 아니기 때문입니다. 우리는 당신이 우리를 두셔서 영원히 당신을 닮고 당신의 일부이게 하신 곳, 우리가 당신은 물론 살아있는 만물과도 공유하는 생명 안에 머물러 삽니다. 우리는 당신의 생각들을 우리의 생각으로 받아들입니다. 그리고 우리의 뜻은 당신의 뜻과 영원히 하나입니다. 아멘.
