Trainee teachers yesterday voted to sit for an employment exam scheduled for Nov. 19 after announcing last week that they would boycott the exam in protest against government cuts. The decision comes after 10,000 trainee teachers gathered in central Seoul to lobby against Education Minister plans to reduce the number of newly-hired elementary school teachers. Representatives from 11 universities met in Daegu on Monday and agreed to take the exam later this month, saying that they would otherwise waste a year. However, they will boycott classes this week in protest against the ministry's measures, said a committee representative.  The ministry announced last month that it would cut the quota of new teachers to 4,339 next year from 6,585 this year, citing a decrease in the number of students due to a falling birthrate. In a follow-up measure, the ministry announced last week it would be reducing the number of acceptance at 11 National University of Education by as many as 800 for 2007 which subsequntly prevent escalation of competition among the trainees. 1) who do you think would be responsible for this trainee teachers boycott classes and protest and why?

(2) Due to a falling birthrate cause by an increased number of DINK(Double Income and No Kids) as well as single family,it seems the reduction of the number of newly-hired teacher is inevitable, while trainees and would-be teachers asked the government to increase the number of classe for better chance of employment. Please share your thought on it.

(3) Some might agrue that comparing high unemployment rate of their pupils, the trainee teacher need to face competition and M&A among Education universities is necessary. What can be your own solution? Please share with us.

(4) Have you ever joined a demonstration and why or why not?

The History of Halloween

Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in).

Door

The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31, the disembodied spirits of all those who had died throughout the preceding year would come back in search of living bodies to possess for the next year. It was believed to be their only hope for the afterlife. The Celts believed all laws of space and time were suspended during this time, allowing the spirit world to intermingle with the living. Naturally, the still-living did not want to be possessed. So on the night of October 31, villagers would extinguish the fires in their homes, to make them cold and undesirable. They would then dress up in all manner of ghoulish costumes and noisily paraded around the neighborhood, being as destructive as possible in order to frighten away spirits looking for bodies to possess. When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter.

By A.D. 43, Romans had conquered the majority of Celtic territory. In the course of the four hundred years that their ruled, two festivals of Roman origin were combined with the traditional Celtic celebration of Samhain. The first was Feralia, day of passing of the dead. The second was a day to honor Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. By the 800s, the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands. In the seventh century, Pope Boniface IV designated November 1 All Saints' Day, a time to honor saints and martyrs. It is widely believed today that the pope was attempting to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a related, but church-sanctioned holiday. The celebration was also called All-hallows or All-hallowmas (from Middle English Alholowmesse meaning All Saints' Day) and the night before it, the night of Samhain, began to be called All-hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween.

The custom of Halloween was brought to America in the 1840's by Irish immigrants fleeing their country's potato famine. The custom of trick-or-treating is thought to have originated not with the Irish Celts, but with a ninth-century European custom called souling. On November 2, All Souls Day, early Christians would walk from village to village begging for "soul cakes," made out of square pieces of bread with currants. The more soul cakes the beggars would receive, the more prayers they would promise to say on behalf of the dead relatives of the donors
