Service output expands on sales pickup

Resilient demand in the wholesale and retail sales industry is fueling the continuing recovery of the nation`s service sector, which expanded for a 13th straight month in March.
The service output of Asia`s third-largest economy jumped 5.2 percent last month from a year ago after a 6.2 percent increase in February, the National Statistical Office said yesterday.
Though the March growth slightly decelerated as the financial and real estate sectors lost steam, the total service output rebounded 0.4 percent from a 0.7 percent monthly fall in February.
"The March figures showed the service sector is on a solid recovery track," said Kwak Young-hoon, an economist at Hana Securities Co.
A notable gain came from wholesale and retail sales, the main barometer of consumer spending which posted a 2.9 percent month-on-month increase in March.
The figure compared with a 1.6 percent drop over the previous two months.
On the flip side, the financial service output, that had been leading the whole service upturn since last summer, slightly slowed down.
As the domestic stock market eased back due to sky-high oil prices and the rapid appreciation of the Korean won in recent months, stock brokerages and banks suffered a 1.4 percent monthly drop from February.
The real estate sector, another locomotive for the service recovery, also shrank 3.3 percent on a month-on-month basis.
"As fast-growing businesses, such as finance and realty, temporarily showed a slowdown in February and March, the entire service sector seemed to become less bullish," said Kwak.
"But since the finance sector is expected to recover with stock prices regaining value and wholesale and retail sales also highly likely to grow further, there favoroble odds that service growth will pick up again."
Service output expanded 6.1 percent in the first quarter for the year, the biggest increase in 13 quarters, according to the NSO.

도소매업 부문의 탄력적인 수요에 힘 입어 지난 3월 서비스업 생산이 13개월 연속 상승세를 지속했다.
통계청은 어제 3월 서비스업 생산이 작년동월대비 5.2% 늘었다고 밝혔다. 이는 지난 2월의 6.2%보다 조금 낮아진 수치이다.
금융과 부동산 업종의 부진으로 인해 3월 서비스업 생산 증가률은 다소 둔화되었지만 계절조정 전월비로는 0.4% 증가, 2월의 0.7% 감소에서 증가로 돌아섰다.
곽영훈 하나증권 연구원은 “3월의 수치는 서비스업종이 견조한 회복세에 돌입했음을 보여준다”고 말했다.
내수의 지표가 되는 도소매업 생산이 2.9% 늘어나며 가장 두드러진 상승세를 보였다.
이전 두달동안 도소매업 생산은 1.6%의 감소세를 보였다.
반면 작년 여름 이래로 서비스업 생산 증가를 주도해온 금융서비스업 생산은 다소 둔화세를 나타냈다.
최근 몇 달동안의 고유가와 원화 강세로 인해 국내 증시가 다소 주춤거리는 가운데 증권업과 은행업 생산은 2월대비 1.4% 감소했다.
서비스업 회복의 또 다른 견인축 역할을 해온 부동산업 생산도 전월대비 3.3% 감소했다.
“금융과 부동산 등 급속히 성장하던 업종이 2-3월에 일시적 둔화세를 보였기 때문에 서비스업 전체로 볼 때 강세가 다소 완화된 듯 보인다”고 곽 연구원은 말했다.
“그러나 주가의 추가 상승으로 금융업의 회복이 예상되고 도소매업도 추가 상승 여력이 있어 보이기 때문에 서비스업 생산이 지속적으로 증가할 가능성이 높다.”
올 1분기 서비스업 생산은 6.1% 증가하며 13분기만에 최대 증가폭을 기록했다고 통계청은 말했다.
