Translation is not simple work, which changes suitable words from a source language into a target language. Besides, many words include many different meanings in a sentence. Some words are not perfectly compatible between words from a source language and from a target language. Sometimes, each sentence or phrase does not make sense in a target text. There can be more complex issues or problems to translate or interpret a sentence. Therefore, translators and interpreters must have reliable dictionaries to have a better translation.
In reality, there are too many dictionaries to choose only one. One dictionary is never satisfactory to deal with all situations. Normally, translators and interpreters have more than five different types of dictionaries. One of reliable dictionaries is a web dictionary. However, choosing reliable web dictionaries is not very easy because there are too many web dictionaries on the Internet. Thus I will examine search engines on the Internet.
In this article, I would like to discuss search engines based on naver, empass and google. In particular, I will discuss which search engine is more reliable for translators and interpreters in Korean and in English. I will then explain web translators based on altavista, empas and dictionary.com. With examples, I will discuss which web translator is more reliable on the Internet.
I have examined three different search engines, which are naver, empass and google search engines. Two, which are naver and empas, are very similar usage but one, which is, google, is totally different. Search engines from naver and empas have a unique sector which is called “knowledge search”. The sector provides many questions and answers. Millions questions and answers have been accumulated by web users for more than ten years. In addition, they have continually been updated. I believe that almost every situation can be dealt in this sector. For instance, I have typed a sentence in three search engines. Who is the winner of marathon in Sydney Olympic 2000? I found the answer very easily in naver and empas with only one click. The answer was Gezahenge Abera from Ethiopia. The answer was surely in the sector of knowledge search. However, with the search engine from google, it was very hard to find the answer and it took more than ten minutes. I found many words such as marathon, 2000, winner, Sydney Olympic among them. It was very time-consuming and exhausting. If the google search engine is used to find another information, the information might not be found within ten minutes. I am very sure that knowledge search from naver and empas provides many pieces of information using questions and answers.
There is one more strong point in naver and empas. Words are frequently used to find information on the Internet, including naver, empas and google. Nevertheless, proper information, which we are looking for, is not easily found with a few words in search engines. We sometimes require length of a sentence or a full sentence to find suitable information. The more words we try in search engines, the more confused we are. However, in naver and empas, we can use a full sentence to look up information. It is very simple as well as saving time.
For example, I wrote a sentence in naver and empas search engines. How many people died in the titanic? I found the answer with just one click. The answer was 1513 out of 2207 in the two search engines. In the google search engine, I found the fact that 1316 passengers and 891 crew were on board. Many people jumped into the icy water without life jackets. No one knows exactly how many people died.
However, empas and naver search engines are very limited to find information in English. Although two search engines are very useful in Korean, they are too limited to find information in English. They are not allowed to have a full sentence to look up information in English like google. Besides, there is no knowledge search in English version of empas and naver search engines. Therefore, the google search engine is much better to search information in English.
I will examine three web translators, which are babel fish, empas and dictionary.com, whether they are reliable or not. Three web translators are not highly reliable because they often translate some sentences weirdly. Some translated sentences do not make sense.
For example, I have used two languages, which are Korean and English in three web translators. All three web translators translate a sentence from English into Korean. The result of translation is exactly the same. The original sentence was that it is raining cats and dogs. The translated sentence by three web translators was that it is being rained by cats and dogs. The other example is the sentence that why do not you put my shoes on? Three web translators do not have a proper sentence. The target sentence did not make sense. Both examples show that translated sentences do not make sense nor are weird.
However, they are very useful in some situations. In particular, with three web translators, some single and simple sentences are very accurately translated into a target language. For instance, I have sent my mail to my friend. All three can translate into the correct target sentence. In this situation, web translators are reliable.
I examined three search engines, which are naver, empas and google. Given the reasons above, two search engines, which are naver and empas are more reliable than google in Korean web sites. However, they are very limited in English web sites. In English version, the google search engine is better than empas and naver search engines. Then, I examined three web translators, which are babel fish, empas and dictionary.com. All three do not provide accurate translations and they are not very reliable. However , in a simple case, web translators are reliable.
