  레이 라몬테인 (Ray LaMontagne. 미국, 1973년 출생) 

  히피적 경향이 강한 뮤지션 아버지와 어머니 사이에서 태어 나, 

공부와는 담을 쌓고 판타지 소설을 즐겨 읽으며 또래 아이

  들과 싸워 말썽을 일으키는 등 결코 평범하지 않았던 10대의

  Ray는 겨우겨우 고등학교 졸업을 한 후 바로 신발공장에 취직

  을 하고 일을 했다.

  어느날 라디오에서 'Stephen Stills'의 'Treetop Flyer'를 듣고 불현듯 musician이 되겠다는

결심을 했다 한다. 바로 공장을 그만두고 나와 음악에의 길을 찾아, 2004년에 1집 [Trouble]

발매하게 된다. 이 앨범은 발매되자마자 UK차트 1위를 석권하고. 2004년 롤링스톤지가

선정한 '올해의 데뷔 앨범'과, '올해의 앨범'에 나란히 선정된다. 또한 아마존의 필진들이

선정한 "올해의 Best 20", UNCUT과 MOJO와 같은 잡지들의 까다로운 필진들의 찬사를

받았으며, AP통신이 추천하는 2004년 필청작의 영예를 얻는다.

Iron & Wine과 함께 2000년대에 가장 주목해야 할 포크 성향의 싱어 송라이터로 인정

받았으며, 밥 딜런이나 닉 드레이크의 데뷔 시절에 비견될 만큼 뛰어난 역량을 보여주고

있는 이 신인 싱어 송라이터의 데뷔 앨범에 쏟아지는 비유에는 Van Morrison, Tim Buckley,

Neil Young 등의 거장들이 인용되고 있으며, 평단의 높은 평가 이전에 아마존 판매 차트를 강

타하고, 구매자 평점 만점을 얻을 정도로 높은 성과를 얻었다.

이후 2집 [Till The Sun Turns Black]과, 3집 [Gossip In The Grain]가 released되고,

Nick Drake, Tim Burkley의 계보를 이으며 주목받는 Folk Singer-songwriter로 열심히

활동중이다.
