마음을 가져오너라
혜가(慧可)는 눈 속에 서서 마침내 자신의 팔을 잘라내어 달마대사의 주의를 끌었다. 그것은 가르침을 향한 그의 간절한 갈망 때문이었다.
“존귀하신 스승님, 제 마음이 쉬지를 못합니다. 제 마음을 편안히 해주십시오.” 마침내 그는 이렇게 청했다.
“좋다.” 달마가 말했다. “네 마음을 내게 가져오너라. 내가 그것을 쉬게 해주마.”
“스승님, 제가 그 마음을 찾아보았으나, 그것은 얻을 수가 없었습니다.”
“거기 있지 않느냐.” 달마가 대답했다. “내가 이미 그것을 쉬게 하였도다.”
그 순간 혜가는 깨달음을 얻었고, 선종의 제2조사가 되었다. 이로부터 기원후 7세기에서 9세기 사이, 중국에서 선의 황금시대가 열렸다.
왜 그의 마음은 쉬게 되었는가? 그는 무엇을 발견한 것인가?
이것은 ‘꼬임 twist’을 품고 있는 선문답(公案)이다. 선문답은 승려와 스승 사이에서 실제로 있었던 일화이면서도 그 속에 모순을 담고 있다. 선문답은 우리가 그 속으로 들어가 모순과 함께 앉아 있을 때 깨달음을 불러일으킨다. 이 모순 혹은 의문과 함께 앉아 있음이 곧 ‘좌선(坐禪, zazen)’이다. 선문답은 우리 의식 속의 모순을 드러내는 드라마이다.
“어떻게 내 마음을 쉬게 할 수 있는가?”
“고통이나 번뇌의 소멸은 어디에 있는가?”
선문답은 우리의 마음을 객관적 관점(승려의 시선)에서 주관적 관점(스승의 시선)으로 전환시킬 힘이 있다. 그 전환은 세계와 분리된 ‘나-그것(I–It)’의 마음에서, 세계 그 자체인 ‘나-있음(I AM)’의 마음으로의 전환이다. ‘나-있음’의 마음은 언어의 감옥과 문법의 법칙에서 벗어난 자유이다.

Hueku stood in the snow and finally cut off his arm to get Bodhidharma's attention, such was his anguish for the Teaching.
Honored Sir, my mind has no rest. Please put my mind at rest, he finally got to ask.
Ok, said Bodhidharma, being me your mind and I'll put it to rest.
Sir, I have searched from that mind and I find it is unattainable.
There, Bodhidharma said, I have put it to rest.
The monk was awakened and became the 2nd Patriarch of Zen that launched the Golden Age of Zen in China between 7-9 AD.

Why was his mind put to rest? What did he discover?
This is a Zen Koan that has a twist buried in it, a question that is a rub. Zen Koans are a real situation between monk and master that contains a contradiction. Zen Koan induces awakening when you inhabit them and sit in the contradiction. This sitting in the contradiction or question is called Zazen. Zen Koans are dramas that contain the contradiction in our own consciousness. Who can I put my mind to rest? Where is the cessation of suffering or discontent?
Zen Koans have the power to flip your mind from an objective viewpoint (the monks) to a subjective viewpoint (the master's) The shift is from the I-IT mind that is separate from the world to the I AM mind that is the world, and the world it it. The I AM mind is free from the prison of language and the laws of grammar.
