The First Test(Exodus 15:22~27)
Then Moses cried out to the LORD, and the LORD showed him a piece of wood. He threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There the LORD made a decree and a law for them, and there he tested them(25).
Hymn #343 In the Hour of Trial(Unified Hymn 443)
Every person carries hidden spiritual illnesses. The start of evangelism is healing these illnesses. Among the 7 Remnants in the Bible, Joseph brought healing to Egypt and Moses healed the Israelites. Samuel and David healed a nation scarred by the Philistines, and the Remnants who were taken as captives healed the nations they were taken to. In today’s main scriptures, the Israelites faced their first test, and God promised to heal them from all the illnesses they had experienced in Egypt. He promised to heal their enslaved spiritual states, the illnesses they suffered while living as slaves, and their slave mentalities. In verse 25, God said He was testing Israel. What exactly was He testing?
1. Exodus - The Passover
It’s easy to often overlook God’s command of commemorating the Passover. God told Moses to go and offer a blood sacrifice, assuring him that His mighty hand would be with him(Exodus 3:1~18), and He performed the ten miracles. On the day the blood was applied, they were set free(Passover). God told them not to forget this truth as they traveled through the wilderness.
2. Experience of the Red Sea
God led the Israelites into the sea, and He also led the Egyptian army into the sea so that they were destroyed. He used the “hardness of their hearts.” This shows how you should interpret the suffering and trials you face.
3. Future - Absolute Condition
Entering the land of Canaan required absolute conditions. You must believe in God’s absolute sovereignty over your life, His absolute plan for world missions through the land of Canaan, and His absolute covenant that will surely be fulfilled. Then you’ll go on the absolute journey. Entering Canaan and world evangelization are God’s absolute goals.
There’s something even more important. When they arrived at Elim, they found 12 springs and 70 palm trees. The number 12 represents God’s chosen people, and the number 70 represents conquest and joy. In other words, it’s not enough just to leave Egypt and the wilderness. You must come out from darkness. “He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness.”(Colossians 1:13)
