The government plans to announce next Wednesday an array of policies to improve business practices between large conglomerates and small and medium-sized enterprises, according to sources yesterday.
The policies are also expected to focus on supporting small and midsize companies in research, development and financing.
Along with the announcement, President Lee Myung-bak is expected to meet with representatives from large and small companies at the Blue House to accept the guidelines to promote co-existence.
The policies will be jointly publicized by the Ministry of Strategy and Finance, Ministry of Knowledge Economy, Fair Trade Commission and Small and Medium Business Administration.
“President Lee has met heads of conglomerates and small and midsize companies and listened to complaints from both sides and thought about co-existence strategies,” a Blue House official was quoted as saying by Yonhap. “Amid economic recovery, we’ll come up with schemes that could further support the recovery.”
After holding a meeting with the president this month, the conglomerates have held seminars on how to follow the government agenda on improving business conditions for small and medium-sized enterprises.
The policies are expected to include ways for conglomerates to assist not only first contractors but also sub-contractors and provide small and midsize companies with growth opportunities in terms of exports.
They will include measures to prevent large companies from entering areas where small and midsize companies are dominant and to give priority to a consortium comprising both large and small companies in selecting bidders for large government projects. The government is considering that cash payments to contractors should be made within two months from the contract date.
