if와 whether의 차이.
‘그것이 사실인지 (아닌지) 궁금하다.’를 영작하면?
* I wonder if it is true (or not).
* I wonder whether it is true (or not).
예, 두 가지로 표현이 가능하죠.
일단 if보다 whether를 쓰는 편이 늘 안전하다고 말씀드릴 수 있어요.”
당연히 if를 쓰는 경우는 모두 whether로 바꾸어 표현이 가능하고요.
그러나 whether를 쓸 수 있다고 해서, 늘 if로 바꿀 수 있는 것은 아니거든요.
1. ‘whether ......... or not’ 은 붙여서 써도 되고, 떼어서 써도 됩니다.
I asked him whether it was true or not. (O)
I asked him whether or not it was true. (O) 나는 그에게 그것이 사실인지 아닌지 물었다.
그러나 ‘if ........ or not’은 반드시 떼어서 써야 됩니다.
I asked him if it was true or not. (O)
I asked him if or not it was true. (X)
2. 주절로 쓰이는 경우 : whether절로 써야 함. (if절 안됨.)
Whether he can stay with his family is another matter.

그가 그의 가족들과 함께 묵을 수 있는가는 전혀 다른 문제이다.
보어나 부사절로 쓰일 때에도, whether절이 더 선호됨.

3. (절이 아닌) to부정사의 경우 whether만 가능.

가야 할지 말아야 할지 모르겠다.

결혼을 해야 할 지 기다려야 할지 결정 못했어.
4. 전치사 뒤에도 whether절만 가능.
It depends on whether he is ready or not.
전치사 뒤에 whether절만 가능.

5. 그 밖에도 몇 가지 동사나 명사 뒤에도 whether 절을 더 선호하고 있죠.
We discussed whether we should close the business.
우리는 장사를 접을 것인가를 놓고 의논했다.
It is your decision whether you join us or not.
네가 우리한테 낄 것인가 말 것인가는 (순전히) 네가 결정할 일이다.

하지만 다음과 같은 경우에 whether만이 허용됩니다.
(a) 부정사가 이어질 때:
I can't decide whether to postpone it or cancel it.
그것을 연기할 것인지 취소할 것인지 결정할 수가 없다
(b) or not가 이어질 때:
It is unclear to me whether or not she likes it.
그녀가 그것을 좋아할지 어떨지 나는 잘 모르겠다
(c) 주어절로 쓰일 때:
Whether we win or lose makes no difference.
우리가 이기든 지든 아무 문제가 안 된다
