14. On Freedom
자유에 대하여
And an orator said, "Speak to us of Freedom."
And he answered:
그리자 이번에는 한 연설가가 말했다.
"우리에게 자유에 대해 말씀하여 주소서."
그러자 그가 답하였다.
At the city gate and by your fireside I have seen you
prostrate yourself and worship your own freedom,
Even as slaves humble themselves before a tyrant and praise him
though he slays them.
도시의 문앞에서 그리고 그대들의 난롯가에서
나는 너희들이 엎드려 자기 자신만을 위하여 예배를 올리는 것을 보았다.
마치 노예들이 자신을 지배하는 폭군이 비록 그들을 살해할 지라도
그들의 압제자 앞에서 스스로 자신을 낮추고 그를 찬양하는 것처럼..
Ay, in the grove of the temple and in the shadow of the citadel
I have seen the freest among you wear their freedom
as a yoke and a handcuff.
And my heart bled within me; for you can onl y be free
when even the desire of seeking freedom becomes a harness to you,
and when you cease to speak of freedom as a goal and a fulfillment.
그렇다. 사원의 숲속에서 성채(城砦)안의 그늘에서
나는 너희들 중에서 가장 자유로운 자들이
그들의 자유를 멍에와 수갑처럼 둘러쓰고 있는 것을 보았다.
그리하여 나는 마음속으로 피를 흘렸나니,
왜냐하면 너희들은 너희 스스로를 제어하여
자유를 찾고자하는 그 갈망에서조차 자유로워질 때
그리고 자유 그 자체가 그대들의 목적이며 기쁨이라고 말하는 것을 그칠 때
그대들은 진실로 자유로워 질 것이기에..
You shall be free indeed when your days are not without a care
nor your nights without a want and a grief,
But rather when these things girdle your life
and yet you rise above them naked and unbound.
너희들은 너희들의 낮 동안에 근심이 없고
너희들의 밤동안에도 바램과 슬픔이 없을 때 진정으로 자유로워 질 것이며,
또한 오히려 이러한 것들이 그대의 삶을 옭아매고 있더라도
그때도 너희들이 그것들에 솔직하고 구속당하지 않을 때 그것들을 초월하게 되리라.
And how shall you rise beyond your days and nights
unless you break the chains which you at the dawn of your understanding
have fastened around your noon hour?
In truth that which you call freedom is the strongest of these chains,
though its links glitter in the sun and dazzle the eyes.
그리고 너희들이 깨달음의 새벽에
너희의 낮 시간 내내 너희를 졸라매고 있었던 자신의 사슬을 끊지 않는다면
어떻게 그대들이 낮과 밤을 넘어 초월할 수 있으랴?
비록 그 고리가 햇빛에 반짝반짝 빛나고 눈을 현혹시키더라도
사실은 그대들이 자유라고 부르는 이것이 그대들의 가장 강력한 사슬인 것을..
And what is it but fragments of your own self you would discard
that you may become free?
If it is an unjust law you would abolish,
that law was written with your own hand upon your own forehead.
You cannot erase it by burning your law books
nor by washing the foreheads of your judges,
though you pour the sea upon them.
그러므로 그대들이 자유롭기 위하여 포기하고 버리는
그 모든 것들이 알고 보면 그대 자신의 파편이외에 무엇이겠는가?
비록 그것이 너희들이 폐지하고자하는 정당하지 못한 법일지라도
그 법이란 결국 너희들이 자신의 손으로 자신의 이마에 쓴 것이며..
너희들이 너희들의 법전(法典)을 불사른다 해도
또 너희가 재판관 이마를 씻는다 해도 그것을 지울 수 없으며
그들 위로 바다를 퍼붓는다 해도 그것을 지울 수 없으리라.
And if it is a despot you would dethrone,
see first that his throne erected within you is destroyed.
For how can a tyrant rule the free and the proud,
but for a tyranny in their own freedom and a shame in their won pride?
만일 너희들이 끌어내리려는 것이 폭군이라면 먼저 살필지니
너희들의 내부에 자리잡고 있는 그 폭군의 옥좌(玉座)가 무너졌는지를..
왜냐하면 너희들의 자유로움속에 난폭함이 없고
너희들의 자랑스런 자긍심(自矜心)속에 부끄러움이 없다면
어떻게 폭정으로 너희들의 자유와 자긍심을 다스릴 수 있겠는가?
And if it is a care you would cast off,
that care has been chosen by you rather than imposed upon you.
And if it is a fear you would dispel,
the seat of that fear is in your heart and not in the hand of the feared.
그리고 그것이 만일
그대들이 벗어 던지고 싶은 근심이라면,
그 근심이란 그대들에게 강요되어 떠맡겨진 것이 아니라
그대들 스스로가 선택한 것이며,
또 그것이 만일
그대들이 쫓아내버리고 싶은 두려움이라면
그 두려움의 자리란 두려워하는 자의 손아귀에 있는 것이 아니라
그것이 그대들의 가슴속에 자리하고 있음이라.
Verily all things move within your being in constant half embrace,
the desired and the dreaded, the repugnant and the cherished,
the pursued and that which you would escape.
These things move within you as lights and shadows in pairs that cling.
진실로 모든 것들은
언제나 그대의 마음속에서 반쯤 뒤섞인 채로 끓임없이 움직이나니
그대들의 갈망, 그대들의 근심, 그대들이 싫어하는 것,
그대들이 소중하게 생각하는 것,
그대들이 추구하는 것, 그리고 그대들이 피하고 싶은 것이 바로 그것이다.
그리고 이것들은 그대의 마음속에서 마치 한 쌍의 빛과 그림자처럼
서로 껴안은 채 움직이고 있음이니라.
And when the shadow fades and is no more,
the light that lingers becomes a shadow to another light.
And thus your freedom when it loses its fetters becomes itself
the fetter of a greater freedom.
그러므로 그림자가 사라지고 더 이상 보이지 않게 되면
남은 빛은 꾸물거리며 또 다른 빛의 그림자가 되듯이,
이렇듯 그대들의 자유란
그대들이 작은 그대의 족쇄에서 풀려났을 때
그 풀려남 자체가 스스로 더 큰 자유라는 족쇄를 차는 것이 되어 버리는 것을..
