Researchers fan out into the woods tracking tiny ticks that could be a big problem this summer. Various tick species can cause diseases from potentially fatal Powassan to Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Here in New York's Hudson Valley, they're using mice and chipmunks to study balcklegged ticks. Also called deer ticks, they are linked to Lyme disease, which affects tens of thousands annually in the U.S. Reasearchers who expect a bumper crop of ticks base their projections on big mice populations last year. Newborn ticks feed on mice. The Cary Institute is now trying to find out if it can reduce tick populations in entire neighborhoods. Michael Hill, Associated Press, Millbrook, New York.
