An ancient human jawbone dredged from the seafloor off Taiwan is believed to be from a Denisovan, an early hominid that diverged from Neanderthals some 400,000 years ago and once lived alongside Homo sapiens in Eurasia.

Study co-author Takumi Tsutaya, a biological anthropologist in Japan, says scientists were able to analyze ancient protein fragments from the jawbone and compare it to a fossil found in Denisova Cave in Siberia.
It's a big discovery because very few of this third type of hominid fossils have ever been found.
