578 25/12/14 7.6 Earthquake, Tsunami Strike off Eastern Aomori, Japan

1. The 7.6 earthquake triggered a tsunami of up to 40 centimeters in communities along the coast, according to the Japanese Meteoroglical Agency.

2. It struck just east of Aomori, the northernmost prefecture of Japan's main Honshu Island, and south of Hokkaido island.

3. NHK, the countries country's public broadcaster, reported several people were injured at a hotle in the town of Hachinohe. 

4. It also reported nuclear power plants in the region were conducting safety checks.

5. Prime Minister Takaichi said the government set up an emergency task force force to urgently assess the extent of damage.
