765 26/6/7 AI Boom Increases Data Centers' Environmental Burden

1. According to a United Nations University report, the environmental footprint of data centers  already  rivals some of the world's largest countries.

2. The report also predicts their water and energy use and pollution will double in just four years as the use of AI grows.

3. The report issude Wednesday found that last year global data centers used 448 trillion watt-hours of elecctricity and that electricity produced about 208 million tons of carbon dioxide, about the same amount as Argentina.

4. The study focused on energey use and did not examine the massive amount of water used to cool data centers.
