1. David Hockney's paintings are of pools in shimmering in the Los Angeles sunshine and colorful iPad drawings have become icons of 20th-century art.

2. Over a seven-decade career, Hockney explored a and reimagined classical portraiture, landscape painting, and pop art, working in painting, collage, photography, and digital drawing.

3. He was born in the north of England but really lived much of his life in Southern California, making its sun-drenched suburban views a major motif.
