나비파(Les Nabis)는 19세기말 팽배해진 물질주의의 한계와
색채분석에 의존하여 대상을 그대로 묘사하는 인상파의 작품에
싫증을 느끼고 종합적인 구성을 시도하여 자신의 사색을 화면에 전개하였다.
미술에서 색채는 사물의 원래 색과 같을 필요가 없다는
고갱의 관념에서 나온 나비파는 표현의 단순화를 통해
그 속에 영원성을 부여하였으며
굵은 윤곽선을 통해 장식적 기법을 차용하였고,
20세기초의 추상과 비구상 미술발전의 바탕이 되었다
팰릭스 발로통은 스위스에 태어나 프랑스로 귀화한 나비파 화가이다.
그는 본래 목판화에 탁월한 재능을 보였는데 나비파에 합류하면서
장식적이고 평면적인 작품을 선보였다.
강렬한 색상을 많이 사용하는 그의 그림은
인상주의 그림, 마티스적인 그림, 때로는 달리를 연상하게 그림 등
다양한 면을 엿볼 수 있게 한다.
