"Editors of popular magazines, who, after having competed to pay Reed their highest prices, had become timid during 1916 and 1917, flatly refused, when he returned from Russia, to print anything he wrote. A distinguished liberal, personally willing to publish Reed’s stories, was warned that his magazine would be suppressed. But Reed would not be silenced. Not only did he write for the Liberator, successor to the suppressed Masses; he went on an extended lecture tour in the East. Eager crowds greeted him, hungry for the story of the liberation of the Russian masses. The authorities, however, federal and local, watched with alarm. In Philadelphia the permit for his meeting was revoked. To test the right of free speech, he addressed a gathering of several hundred on a street corner. He was arrested, and listeners, attempting to come to his rescue, were beaten by the police. Charged with inciting to riot and making seditious remarks, he was released on bail. Immediately he started for the Middle West, where cheering throngs listened to his report. In Cleveland his suitcase was searched for bombs. In Detroit scores of police arrested a large portion of his audience, ostensibly on the suspicion that they might be undesirable aliens. On July 4, he and Art Young visited Gene Debs, who flew down the steps of his Terre Haute home to meet them, and told them he was “with the boys everywhere who are making the fight, all the way, straight through, without a flicker.” And the two of them reported the I. W. W trial in Chicago. "For a moment,” Reed wrote, “it seemed to me that I was watching the Central Committee of the American Soviets trying Judge Landis for—well, say counter-revolution.”"
