“거듭나야 한다(Born Again)”는 말은 사실 당신의 용어가 아니다 —
그리고 그것이 당신이 생각하는 것보다 훨씬 더 중요한 이유
은혜의 메시지를 전할 때 우리가 직면하는 가장 큰 도전은 세상의 불신앙이 아니라, 성경을 둘러싼 종교적 안개이다. 사람들은 교회에서 들은 수많은 진부한 표현들, 강단의 표어들, 교단적 전통들에 이미 익숙해져 있어서, 정작 성경이 말할 때쯤이면 그들의 마음은 이미 가득 차 있다.그래서 때로는 사람들을 성장시키기 전에 먼저 해독(detox) 해야 할 필요가 있다.
하나님으로부터가 아니라, 하나님께서 실제로 말씀하신 것을 대신해 버린 인간이 만든 종교적 어휘로부터의 해독이다.
그리고 그 혼란을 가장 분명하게 드러내는 표현이 바로 이것이다.
👉 “너는 반드시 거듭나야 한다.”
이 말은 어디에나 있다. 설교들, 간증들, 자동차 스티커들, 여론조사들, 심지어 정치 인터뷰에까지 등장한다.
그러나 문제는 이것이다.
이 표현을 사용하는 대부분의 그리스도인들은 성경으로 그 뜻을 설명할 수 없다.
그리고 그보다 더 적은 사람만이,
그것이 누구에게 말씀된 것인지,
왜 말씀된 것인지,
그리고 왜 그것이 은혜의 경륜 아래 있는 오늘날의 이방인들에게는 적용되지 않는지를 설명할 수 있다.
그러므로 이제, 말씀을 바르게 나누어 이 안개를 조심스럽고 차분하게 걷어내 보자.
성경에 따른 “거듭남(Born Again)”의 진짜 의미
“거듭난다”라는 표현은 요한복음 3장에 나오며, 주 예수 그리스도께서 유대인의 관원인 니고데모에게 하신 말씀이다(요 3:1, 10).
예수님께서 그에게 말씀하시기를,
“사람이 거듭나지 아니하면 하나님의 나라를 볼 수 없느니라.” (요 3:3, KJV)
그리고 두 번의 출생이 무엇인지 설명하신다.
“육신으로 난 것은 육이요, 또 성령으로 난 것은 영이니라.” (요 3:6)
여기에는 두 가지 출생이 있다.
• 육신의 출생 — “육으로 난 것”
• 영적인 출생 — “영으로 난 것”
이것이 바로 이스라엘이 그들의 땅의 왕국에 들어가기 위한 기초이다.
그리고 이것을 분명히 기억해야 한다.
예수님은 이스라엘 사람에게, 이스라엘의 약속에 대해, 이스라엘의 왕국 프로그램을 두고 말씀하신 것이다.
이방인들은 이 본문에 없다.
그리스도의 몸도 이 본문에 없다.
바울의 복음도 이 본문에 없다.
그 신비의 경륜 또한 이때에는 아직 계시되지 않았다.
왜 이스라엘은 두 번의 출생이 필요했는가
이스라엘은 이미
✔ 아브라함에게서 난 육신적인 출생은 가지고 있었으나 (창 12장; 요 8:33)
✘ 반드시 하나님과의 영적인 관계를 가진 것은 아니었다.
예수님께서는 아브라함을 자기 아버지라 자랑하던 바리새인들에게 말씀하셨다.
“너희가 아브라함의 자손이었다면 아브라함의 일을 행하였으리라.” (요 8:39)
그러나 곧이어 이렇게 말씀하신다.
“너희는 너희 아비 마귀에게서 나와서 너희 아비의 정욕을 행하고자 하는도다." (요 8:44)
그들은 올바른 혈통은 가지고 있었지만,
잘못된 영적 아버지를 가지고 있었다.
이것이 바로 이스라엘이 새로운 출생, 곧 거듭남이 필요했던 이유이다.
다시 “구원받기 위해서”가 아니라,
그들의 약속된 땅의 왕국에 들어가기 위해 필요한 영적인 생명을 받기 위함이었다(겔 36:25–27; 렘 31:31–34).
왜 이방인은 “거듭날 수 없는가”
이 말은 많은 신자들에게 처음 들을 때 큰 충격이 된다.
👉 이방인은 거듭날 수 없다.
왜냐하면 우리는 애초에 아브라함의 육신적 가족 안에서 첫 번째 출생을 한 적이 없기 때문이다.
“거듭나기” 위해서는,
하나님께서 이스라엘과 맺으신 언약 안에서 인정하시는 첫 번째 출생이 먼저 있어야 한다.
그러나 이방인인 우리는 그것이 없다.
바울은 분명히 말한다.
“그때에 너희는 그리스도로부터 분리되어 있었고 이스라엘 나라에 속하지 않은 타국인이요, 약속의 언약들로부터는 생소한 사람이었으며 소만도 없고 세상에서 하나님도 없었느니라." (엡 2:12)
언약도 없었고,
약속도 없었고,
아브라함의 혈통도 없었으며,
왕국에 대한 요구도 없었다.
그렇다면 오늘날 우리를 가리키는 올바른 성경적 용어는 무엇인가?
바울은 그리스도의 몸을 놓고 “거듭났다”는 말을 사용하지 않는다
대신 바울은 일관되게 다음과 같은 교리를 사용한다.
👉 거듭남(regeneration, 중생)
👉 새로운 생명
👉 그리스도 안에서의 새 창조
예를 들면,
“우리가 행한 의로운 행위에 의하지 않고 그의 자비하심에 따라 중생의 씻음과 성령의 새롭게 하심으로 우리를 구원하셨으니” (딛 3:5)
“그러므로 누구든지 그리스도 안에 있으면 새로운 피조물이라. 옛것들은 지나갔으니, 보라, 모든 것이 새롭게 되었도다.” (고후 5:17)
“성령이 친히 우리의 영과 함께 우리가 하나님의 자녀임을 증거하시거니와” (롬 8:16)
이것은 이스라엘의 ‘거듭남’의 약속이 아니다.
이것은 신비, 곧 바울의 복음을 믿는 모든 자에게 주어지는 그리스도 안의 생명이다.
오늘날 우리는 어떻게 이 새 생명을 받는가
그리스도의 몸을 위한 중생(regeneration)은 바울에게 맡겨진 복음을 통해 임한다.
“이는 성경대로 그리스도께서 우리의 죄들로 인하여 죽으시고 장사되셨다가 성경대로 셋째 날에 다시 살아나셔서” (고전 15:3–4)
사람이 행위 없이 오직 그리스도만을 신뢰할 때,
✔ 하나님께서는 그를 아담 안에서 꺼내어
✔ 그리스도 안에 두시고
✔ 자신의 의로 입히시며
✔ 성령으로 인치시고
✔ 그리스도의 몸의 지체로 삼으시며
✔ 하나님의 생명 자체를 주신다.
이것이 우리의 정체성이다.
이것이 우리의 부르심이다.
이것이 우리의 소망이다.
이것이 우리의 복음이다.
이스라엘의 새 출생이 아니다.
이스라엘의 왕국 프로그램도 아니다.
요한복음 3장도 아니다.
언약신학도 아니다.
교회 전통도 아니다.
그러면 우리는 무엇이라고 말해야 하는가?
“거듭났다” 대신, 오늘날 우리에게 맞는 성경적 표현은 다음과 같다.
✔️ 중생되었다(재창조되었다)
✔️ 그리스도 안에서 살아나게 되었다
✔️ 새 피조물이다
✔️ 은혜로 말미암아 믿음을 통해 구원받았다
은혜의 경륜 아래에서 하나님께서 주신 성경의 어휘를 사용하자.
왜냐하면
분명함은 안정함을 낳고,
안정함은 성장을 낳으며,
성장은 기쁨을 낳기 때문이다.
바른 분별(Right Division)은 성경을 복잡하게 만드는 것이 아니라,
종교적 혼란의 바다에서 빠져 죽지 않도록 지켜주는 구명줄이다.

Why “Born Again” Isn’t Your Term — And Why That Matters More Than You Think
One of the greatest challenges we face in presenting the message of grace is not the unbelief of the world—it’s the religious fog that surrounds the Bible.
People have heard so many church clichés, pulpit slogans, and denominational traditions that by the time the Scripture speaks, their minds are already full.
So sometimes, before you can help people grow, you have to help them detox—not from God, but from manmade religious vocabulary that has replaced what God actually said.
And few phrases reveal that confusion more clearly than:
👉 “You must be born again.”
It’s everywhere: sermons, testimonies, bumper stickers, polls, and even political interviews. But the problem is this:
Most Christians who use the phrase cannot explain what it means from the Bible.
And even fewer can explain who it was spoken to, why it was said, orwhy it does not apply to Gentiles today in the dispensation of grace.
So let’s clear the fog—slowly, carefully, and with Scripture rightly divided.
What “Born Again” Really Means — According to the Bible
The phrase appears in John 3, where the Lord Jesus Christ speaks to Nicodemus, a ruler of Israel (John 3:1, 10).
Jesus tells him:
“Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (John 3:3)
Then He explains what the two births are:
“That which is born of the flesh is flesh…” “…and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” —John 3:6
There are two births in the passage:
• A physical birth — “born of the flesh” (John 3:6)
• A spiritual birth — “born of the Spirit” (John 3:6)
This is the foundation of Israel’s entrance into their earthly kingdom.
And note carefully:
Jesus is talking to an Israelite, about an Israelite promise, concerning Israel’s kingdom program.
Gentiles are not in the passage.
The Body of Christ is not in the passage. Paul’s gospel is not in the passage.
The Mystery program has not yet been revealed.
Why Israel Needed Two Births
Israel had:
✔ A physical birth from Abraham (Genesis 12; John 8:33)
✘ But not necessarily a spiritual relationship with God
Jesus told the Pharisees—who proudly claimed Abraham as their father:
“If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham.” (John 8:39)
And then:
“Ye are of your father the devil.” (John 8:44)
They had the right genealogy,
but the wrong spiritual father.
This is why Israel needed a new birth.
Not to get “saved again,”
but to receive the spiritual life necessary to enter their promised earthly kingdom (Ezekiel 36:25–27; Jeremiah 31:31–34).
Why Gentiles Cannot Be “Born Again”
This shocks many believers the first time they hear it:
👉 Gentiles cannot be born again because we were never “born the first time” into Abraham’s physical family.
To be “born again,” you must have a first birth that God recognizes in His covenant with Israel.
We Gentiles do not have that.
Paul says plainly:
“At that time ye were without Christ…
aliens from the commonwealth of Israel… strangers from the covenants of promise.” —Ephesians 2:12
No covenants.
No promises.
No Abrahamic lineage.
No kingdom requirement.
So what is the correct term for us?
Paul Never Uses the Term “Born Again” for the Body of Christ
Instead, Paul consistently uses the doctrine of:
👉 Regeneration
👉 Newness of life
👉 A new creation in Christ
Examples:
Titus 3:5
“He saved us… by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost.”
2 Corinthians 5:17
“If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature.”
Romans 8:16
“The Spirit… beareth witness… that we are the children of God.”
This is not Israel’s “born again” promise.
This is the mystery—life in Christ given to all who believe Paul’s gospel.
How We Receive This New Life Today
Regeneration for the Body of Christ comes through the gospel committed to Paul:
“Christ died for our sins… was buried… and rose again.” —1 Corinthians 15:3–4
When you trust Christ exclusively, apart from works:
✔ God takes you out of Adam
✔ Places you into Christ
✔ Gives you His righteousness
✔ Seals you with the Holy Spirit
✔ Makes you a member of the Body of Christ
✔ Gives you His very life
This is our identity.
This is our calling.
This is our hope.
This is our gospel.
Not Israel’s new birth.
Not Israel’s kingdom program.
Not John 3.
Not covenant theology.
Not church tradition.
So What Should We Say?
Instead of “born again,” the Biblical term for us is:
✔️ Regenerated
✔️ Made alive in Christ
✔️ A new creature
✔️ Saved by grace through faith
Let’s use the vocabulary the Bible gives us in the dispensation of grace.
Because clarity produces stability.
And stability produces growth.
And growth produces joy.
Right division doesn’t complicate Scripture—it keeps you from drowning in religious confusion.
