AI(Artificial Intelligence·인공지능)가 음주 운전 단속(drunk driving enforcement)에도 큰 변화를 가져올 것으로 보인다. 경찰이 차량 통행을 막고(block traffic) 음주 측정기(breathalyzer)로 확인하던 방식에서 벗어나 AI 카메라가 순간적인 데이터 분석으로 음주 운전자를 적발하게 될 전망이다.
BBC방송에 따르면, 영국에선 세계 최초로 AI 카메라를 활용한 음주 운전 단속을 시범 운용하고(conduct a pilot operation) 있다. 남서부 데번과 콘월 지역에 도입된 이 최첨단 시스템(state-of-the-art system)은 카메라에 찍힌 차량 움직임(vehicle movement)·조향(steering)·속도 등 주행 패턴과 얼굴 표정(facial expression)·시선 방향(gaze direction)·머리 움직임 등 다양한 신체 신호를 AI가 실시간으로(in real time) 분석, 음주 여부를 파악한다.
수많은 음주 운전 데이터를 학습한 AI는 불규칙한 속도 변화, 차선 이탈(lane departure), 급격한 핸들 조작(sudden steering maneuver), 비정상적인 가속·감속(acceleration and deceleration) 등 미묘한 패턴을 감지한다(discern subtle patterns). 카메라를 통해 운전자의 얼굴 상태, 머리 위치, 눈 깜빡임 빈도(blink frequency), 비정상적 자세(abnormal posture) 등을 포착해 음주로 인한 신체·인지 기능 저하(physical and cognitive impairment)를 적발한다.
눈·눈꺼풀(eyelids)·입술·코 등 얼굴에서만 70곳 이상의 특징점을 인식, 각각의 움직임과 변화를 분석해 하품(yawning)·졸음(drowsiness)·피로(fatigue)·산만함(distraction) 등 주의력 저하 상태를 판별한다. 또 고개 까딱거림(head nodding)과 좌우 흔들림(side-to-side shaking), 운전 자세 변화도 함께 분석한다. 단순한 순간 포착이 아니라 다수의 이동식 카메라를 통해 연속해서 변화를 관찰·종합해 음주 징후를 감별한다(detect signs of intoxication).
그 과정에서 이상 신호가 감지되면, AI는 즉각 인근 경찰에 실시간으로 관련 정보를 전송하고(transmit the relevant information), 현장 출동 경찰은 해당 차량을 정차시켜(pull the vehicle over) 최종적으로 음주 여부를 확인한다.
AI 카메라는 이동식이어서 어디에나 필요한 만큼 설치할 수 있다. 따라서 경찰 인력으로는 감당하기 어려운 광범위한 지역에서 신속·정확한 단속을 실시할 수 있다. 게다가 24시간 가동이 가능해 기존의 시간·공간 한계를 획기적으로 보완해 준다(substantially make up for the limitations of time and space).
지금까지는 사고 발생 후에야 음주 운전이 드러나는 경우가 많았다. 그런데 AI 카메라는 사고 발생 전에 음주 운전자를 미리 식별할(identify drunk drivers in advance) 수 있어 인명 피해를 크게 줄일(significantly reduce casualties) 것으로 기대된다. 음주 운전자는 치명적 교통사고를 일으킬(cause a fatal traffic accident) 확률이 6배 이상 높다고 한다.
