Red Sox deal for lefty Sauerbeck

BOSTON -- In a move that filled the last remaining hole in their recently revamped bullpen, the Red Sox acquired left-handed specialist Scott Sauerbeck in a trade with the Pirates.
The Red Sox announced the move prior to Tuesday night's game against the Tigers.
In exchange for Sauerbeck and minor league left-handed pitcher Mike Gonzalez, the Sox dealt 23-year-old right-hander Brandon Lyon and minor league right-handed pitcher Anastacio Martinez.
Lyon served as the closer for much of the first half, saving nine games. But he went into a slump in June, at which point the Sox restructured their bullpen.
The main move at that point was installing Byung-Hyun Kim as the closer. Since Kim went to the bullpen on July 1, he has converted all five of his save opportunities.
Though the Sox do have two solid lefties in their pen in Alan Embree and Casey Fossum, neither one of them specializes against lefties, which has been Sauerbeck's forte.
The 31-year-old Sauerbeck is 3-4 with a 4.05 ERA. Lyon is 4-5 with a 3.93 ERA.
In 34 games for Double-A Portland this year, the 24-year-old Martinez went 3-1 with 14 saves and a 2.25 ERA. He was signed by Boston as a non-drafted free agent on Jan. 13, 1998, and had been used primarily as a starter in the minors prior to this season.
The 25-year-old Gonzalez, Pittsburgh's 30th-round selection in the 1997 June draft, was most recently pitching with Triple-A Nashville, where he went 0-0 with one save and a 0.00 ERA in 6 1/3 innings. He also made five appearances with Double-A Altoona and five with Single-A Lynchburg, going a combined 0-1 with one save and a 3.14 ERA
