월드컵 특집 에세이: 골목까지 내려온 축구

월드컵 시즌이 돌아왔다. 텔레비전 앞에 모여 앉아 경기를 보고, 골이 터지는 순간 함께 소리치는 시간. 이 순간 우리는 나이도, 직업도, 신분도 잊는다. 그냥 같은 편이 된다. 그것만으로도 축구는 대단한 스포츠다. 나는 축구를 잘 알지 못한다. 축구 규칙을 설명하라고 하면 말문이 막힌다. 그래도 요즘 자주 축구로 눈이 간다.
한때 축구는 특별한 사람의 전유물이었다. 운동 신경이 남다른 아이, 전문적으로 훈련받은 선수, 그리고 그들을 바라보는 관중. 이것이 우리가 알던 축구의 전부였다. 자녀가 축구하겠다고 하면 어머니는 시큰둥했다. “공부나 해”라는 말이 대답을 대신했다. 경기는 구경하는 것이지, 내 아이가 뛰는 세상은 아니었다. 그러나 이제 그 인식이 달라지고 있다.
그 변화의 흐름 속에서 안정환이 보여 준 역할도 적지 않았다. 그는 은퇴 후 각 분야에서 정상에 올랐던 스타들을 모아 팀을 만들고, 국가대표급 선수들을 초청해서 축구를 지도하게 했다. 수비가 필요하면 국가대표 수비수가 공격수를 막는 법을 가르쳤고, 슛과 골 결정력은 공격수가 직접 시범을 보이며 지도해 주었다.
수비에서 시작해 빌드업을 거쳐 골까지 이어지는 전체 흐름, 선수들 사이의 위치와 거리 조절, 코너킥에 숨어 있는 전술까지 알기 쉽게 풀어서 설명했다. 몰라서 재미없던 축구가 이해하고 보니 훨씬 재미있어졌다. 낯설기만 하던 축구 세계가 거실 안으로 들어온 것이다. 이 프로그램은 큰 인기를 얻었다. 당시 운동장과 축구 교실에는 어린이와 청소년은 물론, 축구를 배우려는 성인들의 모습도 쉽게 볼 수 있었다.
뒤이어 여성 탤런트들이 선수로 뛰는 프로그램이 인기를 끌었다. 처음에는 서툴고 엉성했지만, 경기가 거듭될수록 기량이 향상됐다. 축구를 사랑하는 진심이 시청자의 마음을 움직였다. 축구에 관심 없던 여성들이 경기를 보기 시작했고, 직접 공을 차는 사람도 생겨났다. 동네 운동장 한쪽에서 땀 흘리는 여성들의 모습을 자주 볼 수 있게 됐다.
안정환이 축구를 이해할 수 있게 만들었다면, 손흥민은 아이들에게 좋은 축구 선수가 되는 꿈을 꾸게 했다. 세계 최고의 무대에서 당당히 경쟁하는 손 선수를 보면서 부모들의 마음에도 조용한 희망이 싹텄다. 전에는 축구를 말렸던 어머니들이 직접 아이들의 손을 잡고 축구 교실을 찾았다. 실력만이 아니다. 손 선수의 성품과 팀을 위해 헌신하는 모습을 본 부모들은 “내 아이도 저렇게 되면 좋겠다”는 생각을 갖게 됐다. 운동선수를 넘어 성숙한 인격을 갖춘 그의 모습은 미래 세대의 훌륭한 본보기가 되었다.
집에서 가까운 곳에 도서관이 하나 있다. 전에는 차를 타고 갔지만 요즘은 운동 삼아 걸어간다. 가는 도중에 종합운동장이 있다. 이곳을 지날 때마다 한참 동안 멈춰 서서 구경하곤 한다. 축구 교실에서 아이들이 공을 차고, 청소년들이 경기를 치른다. 때로는 주부들도 구슬땀을 흘린다.
어느 날 전문 방송 장비를 동원해 경기를 촬영하고 있었다. 우리나라 중학교 정상팀과 고등학교 정상팀 경기였다. 경기를 지켜보던 한 청소년에게 말을 걸었다. 알고 보니 그는 맨체스터 유나이티드 유소년팀 소속 선수였다. 부상 치료를 위해 잠시 귀국했다가 학생들의 경기를 보러 온 것이다. 그는 운동장을 바라보며 말했다. “중학교 팀은 잘하네요. 지금 제가 들어가서 뛰어도 될 것 같습니다.” 옆 친구 말을 들어 보니, 그는 이미 실력을 인정받은 차세대 유망주였다. 나는 웃으며 미래의 국가대표가 될지도 모를 그에게 사인을 부탁했다.
며칠 뒤 그곳을 지나는데 유소년 클럽 대항전이 열리고 있었다. 운동장을 여러 구역으로 나누어 동시에 경기가 펼쳐졌다. 잠시 걸음을 멈추고 지켜보았다. 한쪽 끝에서 대각선으로 찬 긴 패스가 정확하게 공격수 발 앞에 떨어졌다. 공격수는 드리블로 첫 번째 수비수를 제쳤다. 이어 동료와 패스를 주고받으며 두 번째 수비수를 따돌린 뒤 과감하게 슛을 날렸다. 골이었다. 아이들이지만 움직임은 정교했고 조직적이었다. 예전보다 수준이 눈에 띄게 높아졌다. 경기장 주변에서는 부모들이 열렬히 응원하고 있었다. “공부나 열심히 하라”던 부모들이 이제는 박수를 치며 아이들을 응원하고 있었다. 나는 그 모습이 대표팀의 월드컵 진출만큼 반가웠다.
대표팀이 잘하는 일은 물론 중요하다. 그러나 축구 저변이 넓어지는 일도 매우 중요하다. 한 명의 스타가 탄생하려면 수많은 아이가 공을 차며 놀아야 한다. 축구하는 인구가 늘어난다는 것은 축구를 사랑하는 문화가 함께 성장하고 있다는 뜻이다.
이런 변화 속에서 맞이한 이번 월드컵은 더욱 특별하게 느껴진다. 2026 북중미 월드컵은 캐나다, 멕시코, 미국이 공동 개최하는 사상 최대 규모의 대회다. 우리 대표팀은 1차전에서 체코를 2대1로 역전하며 힘차게 출발했다. 이제 개최국 멕시코와의 2차전을 앞두고 있다. 쉽지 않은 상대지만 선수들의 선전을 응원한다. 이번 대회가 성공적으로 운영되어 축구를 사랑하는 전 세계 사람들에게 오래 기억될 명승부가 이어지길 바란다. 우리 대표팀도 끝까지 최선을 다해 국민에게 기쁨을 안겨 주길 응원한다.
월드컵은 4년마다 전 세계를 하나로 묶는다. 말이 통하지 않아도 공을 함께 바라보며 우리는 하나가 된다. 그 힘이 경기장 안에만 머물지 않고 운동장에서 골목으로, 또 골목에서 모든 아이의 발끝으로 이어지길 기대한다.
축구가 특별한 사람의 전유물이던 시절은 지나갔다.

World Cup Special Essay: Football Reaching the Streets

The World Cup season has returned. It is a time when people gather around television screens, cheer together, and erupt with joy when a goal is scored. In those moments, age, occupation, and social status no longer matter. We simply become supporters of the same team. That alone makes football a remarkable sport. To be honest, I am not an expert on football. If someone asked me to explain all the rules, I might struggle. Yet these days, I find myself paying more attention to the game than ever before.
There was a time when football seemed reserved for a select few: naturally gifted athletes, professionally trained players, and spectators watching from the stands. For many families, football was something to watch, not something their own children would pursue. When a child said, “I want to play football,” the usual response was, “Focus on your studies.” But that perception has been changing.
Among the many factors behind this change, former national team star Ahn Jung-hwan played a meaningful role. After retirement, he brought together successful celebrities and invited former national team players to teach the game. Defenders explained how to stop attackers, while forwards demonstrated shooting techniques and finishing skills.
For many viewers, football suddenly became easier to understand. The flow from defense to build-up play and finally to a goal, the positioning of players, the importance of spacing, and even the tactics behind a corner kick became visible. A sport that once seemed confusing became fascinating. Football had entered the living room. The program became highly popular. Football fields and training classes soon filled with children, teenagers, and even adults eager to learn the game.
Soon afterward, television programs featuring female celebrities learning and playing football gained popularity. They started as beginners, making mistakes and learning through effort. As their skills improved, viewers became invested in their journey. Many women who had never followed football began watching matches, and some even started playing themselves.
If Ahn Jung-hwan helped people understand football, Son Heung-min inspired children to dream of becoming footballers.
Watching him compete confidently on the world's biggest stages gave many parents new hope. Mothers who once discouraged football began taking their children to football academies. It was not only his talent that impressed people. His character, humility, and dedication to his team made him a role model. Many parents found themselves thinking, “I would be proud if my child grew up to be like him.”
Near my home stands a public library. I used to drive there, but these days I prefer walking. Along the way, I pass a sports complex and often stop to watch what is happening. Children attend football classes. Teenagers compete in matches. Sometimes even mothers join training sessions and work up a sweat.
One day, I noticed a match being filmed with professional broadcasting equipment. It was a match between the middle school top team and the high school top team. While watching, I spoke with a young spectator. He turned out to be a player from Manchester United's youth academy who had temporarily returned to Korea for medical treatment. Looking at the field, he smiled and said: “The middle-school team is really good. I think I could step in and play right now.” His friend later told me that he was already regarded as one of Korea's most promising young talents. Smiling, I asked for his autograph, thinking that he might one day wear the national team jersey.
A few days later, I passed the same sports complex and found a youth club tournament underway. Several matches were being played simultaneously on different fields. I stopped to watch. A long diagonal pass traveled perfectly to an attacker's feet. The player dribbled past one defender, exchanged passes with a teammate to bypass another, and then struck a confident shot into the net. Goal! They were children, but their movement was organized, precise, and disciplined. The standard of play had clearly improved.
Around the field, parents cheered enthusiastically. The same generation that once said, “Study harder,” was now applauding every pass and every goal. To me, that sight was almost as encouraging as seeing the national team qualify for the World Cup.
The success of the national team is important. But the growth of football at the grassroots level is equally important. Every great player begins as a child kicking a ball. When more children play football, a football culture grows with them.
That is why this World Cup feels especially meaningful. The 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted jointly by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, is the largest tournament in the competition's history. Korea opened the tournament with a dramatic 2–1 comeback victory over the Czech Republic and now prepares for a challenging match against host nation Mexico. I hope this tournament will be remembered for unforgettable matches and moments that inspire football lovers around the world. I also hope our national team continues to give its best and bring joy to the people watching back home.
Every four years, the World Cup brings the world together. We may not speak the same language, but for ninety minutes we can all watch the same ball and share the same emotions.My hope is that the spirit of football will not remain inside great stadiums alone. May it continue to spread—from stadiums to neighborhoods, from neighborhoods to playgrounds, and from playgrounds to the feet of every child who dreams of playing the game.
The days when football belonged only to a privileged few are gone.
Football belongs to everyone who loves it.
