What is COMMITMENT?

scriptuers : Ruth 1:6~18; John 12:1~8

What is commitment?
I went to a revival at a church not too long ago.
There were a lot of services for various ages.
Both services that I had a chance to listen to were talking about the same person.
It was Ruth.

I kept thinking about what passage I was going to write for this morning’s message.
The topic is commitment.
There are many different types of commitment in our lives.

I am going to talk about commitment through different people in the bible.
One is Ruth. We know her story very well.

She marries in to a family and in 10 years her husband dies. Ruth’s mother-in-law Naomi decided to go back to land of Judah as in our verse 7.

Ruth

In verse 8, Naomi spoke out and told the 2 daughters-in-law “go back, each of you, to your mother’s home.” And it continues “may the Lord show kindness to you,

as you have shown to your dead and to me.”

Naomi is trying to break off the commitment of marriage for her daughters-in-law.
After all her sons are both dead.

And in verse 14 it shows the commitment that Ruth had for Naomi.
While the Orpah kissed her mother-in-law and left Ruth clung to her.
Here in our first example of commitment, Ruth did not leave Naomi.
And it was Ruth that had a strong commitment for her mother-in-law.
That is one kind of commitment.

The second one is the one of mother daughter or father daughter/son.

Going back to that night when I came back from the revival,

I talked about commitment to my daughter.

I asked a question of my daughter.
I had a serious face when I asked her question about commitment.
It was a simple question in my opinion.

And the answer should have been very easy too.
I asked her what the meaning of commitment was.
She began to look at me and started to answer the question.

She kept saying things about how “trying to help others and have someone’s back

and to take care of people.”

But the answer I wanted never came out and she started to cry.
I asked her why she was crying.
She told me too much pressure and can’t answer under such stress.

So I just left it there and let her go to her room.
I realized that I failed as a father to my own daughter.

But the worst part of it was that she did not even say it to me.

She sent me a text with all that information.

That commitment, the father and daughter was missing from my life.
Way a father commits to his daughter with his love for her

and I know that was the love Jesus had committed to us.

If we look at the bible, both old and new testaments

we get all the stories you want about commitment.

Let’s see if this will work or not.

A 집사 asked out his pastor one night saying that his prayers have been answered.
They go to a restaurant and while eating, a woman came up to the pastor

and took off his shoe and sock and poured really expensive perfume on his feet

and started to wipe it with her hair.

Now a days, with all the internet and other ways to communicate everyone

who saw this would think that the woman was crazy.

First of all people would say “it is such a waste.” “You could feed a lot of homeless people with that kind of money.”

What if anti-Christian group got a hold of this?

They would say “look the Christian church is rotten to the core.”

Both the woman and the pastor who is getting his feet washed in perfume are

 both out of their minds.

This is the kind of writing you would see on the internet here in America

 and around the world.

But this is something that actually happened to Jesus in John 12:3.

This is another kind of commitment that a person can do.
Just thinking about a way to do something,

Maria did what she thought was commitment for Jesus.

She spent a lot of money about 300 데나리.

At that time, it was a wage for a year for most common workers.

That is a big commitment.
Could you spend all your earnings for a whole year on one thing

and then just pour it on your pastor’s feet?

My commitment is not that great.

Let’s say that you make about $50,000/year.

If you get this kind of money and buy a car that would be ok

but you buy an expensive bottle of perfume would be ok too.

But to go and pour it on someone’s feet, just like Maria did to Jesus all those years ago.
What kind of commitment is that?

Do you have that kind of commitment?

It says in Ruth 1:16
But Ruth replied, "Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from you.

Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay.

Your people will be my people and your God my God.

Ruth told her mother-in-law about how she felt about her commitment

even after her sister-in-law left her and went back home.

Ruth

She felt that her commitment was stronger than anything that she could do if she left.
She was going to not just commit to go back to Bethlehem

but was going to be with her forever.

Ruth

She was committed to sharing her home and any circumstances.

If you look at the end of verse 16 she says

“your people will be my people and your God my God.”

Just like God was committed to his people so was she.

Ruth knew that she would not give up commitment to Naomi until she dies.

You have to praise Ruth for her commitment to Naomi.

Just like your commitment to our God in heaven is praised.

But what Naomi did while she was in Moab can’t be overlooked either.
She was committed to God and the way of His life.

It had a rubbing off effect on Ruth.

Without Naomi staying true to her God

and consistent living must have impressed Ruth to abandon her family and her gods.

We always talk about 헌신. How can you give this commitment?
Just like the family, school, life, work, and of course God.

I see that commitment comes in many forms

but without God’s commitment to us now we would not be here.

God’s commitment was so strong that He sent us His only son,

Jesus to us and committed Jesus for our future sins.

Let’s make sure that we can put forth that strong of a commitment to our God in heaven.

Let’s pray.

Dear Lord,

I pray that we can put forth all the commitment that Ruth put for you.

Her commitment was so strong that she would not leave her mother-in-law.

Ruth

Make our commitment stronger so that we can make that commitment towards you.

For those whose commitment to you is less please be with them and make them stronger.

I pray that you will always be with us no matter what we do wrong.

I pray that you will love us, we pray in your son’s precious name. Amen.
