In the Summer of 2015, I found myself working in Greenville SC installing security systems. Work was hard, I was an RM, and dating was even harder. I was discouraged. Then I found out Elder Christofferson was coming to Columbia SC, only a few hours away. I knew I could get the spiritual recharge I needed from listening to an Apostle.

2015년 여름, 저는 사우스캐롤라이나주 그린빌에서 보안 시스템 설치 일을 하게 되었습니다. 일은 고되고, 저는 RM(장로)이었고, 데이트는 더 힘들었습니다. 낙담했습니다. 그러다 크리스토퍼슨 장로님이 몇 시간 거리에 있는 사우스캐롤라이나주 컬럼비아로 오신다는 소식을 들었습니다. 사도의 말씀을 들으면 필요한 영적인 재충전을 얻을 수 있을 거라고 생각했습니다.

So, I asked my non-member boss for the day off. He told me that I could not have it. I explained that I had never asked for a day off before, and this really meant a lot to me. He explained that Saturdays were the busiest day, but that if our team had no installs in queue come 3 PM, that I could go to Colombia for the YSA Devotional. Normally an install took 1-2 hours. So when I got a job dispatched at 2:15 I was devastated. I would miss the devotional. As I started to work my boss showed up, smiled and said "lets get you to Columbia." We finished at 2:55.

그래서 비회원 사장님께 하루 쉬는 날을 요청했습니다. 사장님은 그럴 수 없다고 하셨습니다. 전에는 쉬는 날을 요청해 본 적이 없었는데, 정말 큰 의미가 있다고 설명했습니다. 사장님은 토요일이 가장 바쁜 날이지만, 오후 3시까지 대기 중인 설치가 없으면 콜롬비아에 있는 YSA 예배에 참석할 수 있다고 하셨습니다. 보통 설치는 1~2시간 정도 걸립니다. 그런데 2시 15분에 작업이 배정되자 정말 큰 충격을 받았습니다. 예배를 놓칠까 봐 걱정되었습니다. 일을 시작하자 사장님이 나타나 미소를 지으며 "콜롬비아로 가자."라고 말했습니다. 2시 55분에 작업이 끝났습니다.

I went down to the Devotional and was fed spiritually, but also got to see the humorous side of Elder Christofferson during the Q&A afterwards. I loved when someone asked if God had a sense of humor and Elder Christofferson replied, "Yes! Just make a plan and you'll see it!"

영적 모임에 가서 영적으로 충만함을 받았고, 그 후 질의응답 시간에 크리스토퍼슨 장로님의 유머러스한 모습을 볼 수 있었습니다. 누군가 하나님께 유머 감각이 있냐고 물었을 때, 크리스토퍼슨 장로님이 "네! 계획만 세우면 알게 될 거예요!"라고 대답하셨을 때가 정말 좋았습니다.

After the devotional I wanted to shake his hand. I felt recharged and ready to face the rest of the summer and the disappointments of post-mission dating. I waited in line shook his hand and thanked him, he asked where I was from and I explained I was just working the summer in Greenville.
기도회가 끝나고 그와 악수를 하고 싶었습니다. 재충전된 기분이었고, 남은 여름과 선교 활동 후 데이트에서 오는 실망감들을 마주할 준비가 된 것 같았습니다. 줄을 서서 악수하고 감사 인사를 건넸습니다. 그는 제가 어디 출신인지 물었고, 저는 그린빌에서 여름 동안 일했다고 설명했습니다.


After the devotional I turned my phone back on to find out that my team was slammed, 3 jobs in queue. I drove back to Greenville, and there was still an install waiting at 11 PM that I went straight to. As I installed the system this family asked why I had a glow about me, I explained I had been taught by an apostle earlier that night. They were intrigued, so I basically taught them the restoration and testified of apostles for the entire install.

예배 후 휴대폰을 다시 켜보니 우리 팀이 바빠서 세 가지 작업이 대기 중이었습니다. 그린빌로 돌아왔는데, 밤 11시에 설치 작업이 아직 남아 있어서 바로 갔습니다. 시스템을 설치하고 있는데 어떤 가족이 제 얼굴에 왜 얼굴이 달아오르는지 물었습니다. 저는 그날 밤 사도로부터 가르침을 받았다고 설명했습니다. 그들이 흥미를 느껴서, 저는 그들에게 회복에 대해 가르치고 설치 과정 내내 사도들의 간증을 전했습니다.

That is where my story ended, or so I thought. Fast forward to New Year's Eve, I was going to the SLC Temple with Will, one of my best friends, I was stoked because it was #100 for that year. As we walked into the locker room I saw what I thought was Elder Christofferson. I changed into my temple whites, and as I left the locker area I could clearly see, it was Elder Christofferson.

제 이야기는 거기서 끝났다고 생각했습니다. 새해 전날, 가장 친한 친구 중 한 명인 윌과 함께 SLC 성전에 가고 있었습니다. 그해 성전이 100번째 성전이었기에 정말 기뻤습니다. 라커룸에 들어가자마자 크리스토퍼슨 장로님인 것 같은 분이 보였습니다. 성전용 흰색 옷으로 갈아입고 라커룸을 나서니 크리스토퍼슨 장로님이 또렷하게 보였습니다.

So I walked up to him and said, "You probably don't remember me, but I wanted to thank you for coming to South Carolina and speaking this summer, it meant a lot to me and really helped me. It even gave me opportunities to talk about the gospel with coworkers."

그래서 그에게 다가가서 말했습니다. "아마 저를 기억 못하시겠지만, 이번 여름 사우스캐롤라이나에 오셔서 강연해 주셔서 감사하다는 말씀을 드리고 싶었습니다. 정말 큰 힘이 되었고, 동료들과 복음에 대해 이야기할 기회도 생겼습니다."

He smiled and said, "Greenville, right?" I replied, "No, you came to Columbia." And he smiled and said, "But you lived in Greenville, right?"

그는 미소를 지으며 "그린빌, 맞죠?"라고 물었습니다. 저는 "아니요, 컬럼비아에 오셨잖아요."라고 대답했습니다. 그는 미소를 지으며 "하지만 그린빌에 사셨죠?"라고 물었습니다.

I was flabbergasted that he remembered. He then smiled and said, "Would you like to do one of my family names?" He then handed me one of his family names. Printed off with his name, address, and phone number. I was on cloud nine to be trusted by an apostle. I went into the chapel to wait for the Endowment Session to start and as I was floating there, Steven Young sat down next to me!! And then Elder Christofferson Sat down right in front of me. I turned to my friend will and started to quietly fan girl a little bit when Steve Young must've overheard and leaned in, "He (referring to Elder Christofferson), is just a normal person, like me or you." I was then even more fangirling that Steve Young compared himself to me :)

그가 기억하고 있다는 사실에 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 그러더니 미소를 지으며 "제 가문의 성씨 중 하나를 만들어 보시겠어요?"라고 말했습니다. 그러고는 자신의 성씨 중 하나를 제게 건네주었습니다. 성씨에는 이름, 주소, 전화번호가 적혀 있었습니다. 사도의 신뢰를 받는다는 생각에 저는 하늘 높이 솟아 있었습니다. 엔다우먼트 모임이 시작되기를 기다리며 예배당에 들어갔는데, 붕 떠 있는 동안 스티븐 영이 제 옆에 앉았습니다!! 그리고 크리스토퍼슨 장로님이 바로 제 앞에 앉으셨습니다. 저는 친구 윌에게 돌아서서 조용히 팬심을 불태우기 시작했습니다. 스티브 영이 우연히 듣고는 몸을 기울여 말했습니다. "(크리스토퍼슨 장로님을 지칭하는 말인데) 저나 당신처럼 평범한 사람일 뿐이에요." 스티브 영이 자신을 저와 비교했다는 사실에 더욱 팬심을 불태웠습니다. :)

The endowment session was the last one of the day, and of the year in fact, and it was over capacity. They ended up bringing in a few metal chairs adding one chair to each row to fit everyone. When we moved from one room to the next, everyone on the inside isle was now going into the outside edge and the temple workers realized that this meant Elder Christofferson was going to end up on the metal chair. The look of panic on their face was clear. I watched as Elder Christofferson connected eyes with them, and then say down and grabbed the chair firmly as if to say "I can sit in this, I don't get special treatment." As the endowment ceremony progressed, I watched Elder Christofferson. He did not rush putting on his temple robes, as so many do, (even I was guilty of that, I felt like it was a bit of a sign that I knew what I was doing to be so quick), but instead of being fast, I watched as Elder Christofferson with extreme reverence put on the robes. It changed my paradigm.

엔다우먼트 의식은 그날 마지막이자 사실상 올해 마지막 의식이었는데, 수용 인원이 초과되었습니다. 결국 금속 의자 몇 개를 가져와서 모든 사람이 앉을 수 있도록 각 줄에 의자를 하나씩 더 추가했습니다. 한 방에서 다른 방으로 이동했을 때, 안쪽 통로에 있던 사람들은 모두 바깥쪽 가장자리로 들어가고 있었고, 성전 봉사자들은 크리스토퍼슨 장로님이 금속 의자에 앉게 될 것이라는 것을 깨달았습니다. 그들의 얼굴에는 공황 상태가 뚜렷했습니다. 저는 크리스토퍼슨 장로님이 그들과 눈을 마주치며 "여기 앉을 수 있어요. 특별 대우를 받지 않아요."라고 말하듯 의자를 단단히 잡는 모습을 지켜보았습니다. 엔다우먼트 의식이 진행되는 동안 저는 크리스토퍼슨 장로님을 지켜보았습니다. 많은 사람들이 그러듯이 그분은 성전 예복을 서둘러 입지 않았습니다. (저도 그랬습니다. 제가 그렇게 빨리 해야 한다는 걸 알고 있다는 표시처럼 느껴졌습니다.) 하지만 서둘러 입는 대신, 저는 크리스토퍼슨 장로님이 지극히 경건한 마음으로 예복을 입는 모습을 지켜보았습니다. 제 패러다임이 바뀌었습니다.

But my favorite part came in the Terrestrial Room. Where they invited all who wished to participate to join a prayer circle. Elder Christofferson was sitting on a metal chair at this time and he went up, so too did his brother (or at least a man who looked like his brother). After the prayer as they were walking back to their seats, Elder Christofferson looked at his brother winked, and then speed walked back and took his brothers comfy seat leaving his brother the metal chair. It made me realize that the Apostles really are some of the most personable, caring, and fun people.

하지만 제가 가장 좋았던 순간은 지상의 방에서였습니다. 기도 모임에 참여하고 싶은 모든 사람을 초대했습니다. 그때 크리스토퍼슨 장로님은 금속 의자에 앉아 계셨고, 그의 형님(아니면 적어도 형님과 닮은 남자)도 함께 올라갔습니다. 기도가 끝나고 자리로 돌아가는 길에 크리스토퍼슨 장로님은 형님을 바라보며 윙크를 한 후, 재빨리 걸어가 형님의 편안한 자리에 앉으셨고, 형님은 금속 의자에 앉으셨습니다. 그 모습을 보면서 사도들이 정말 인간적이고, 배려심 깊고, 재미있는 사람들이라는 것을 깨달았습니다.

But the story does not end here!
하지만 이야기는 여기서 끝나지 않습니다!

A year later, on Nov. 4th 2016, Elder Christofferson came to my University (UVU) for a devotional. Due to these prior experiences, I was PUMPED. I got there early, got a good seat. And then he talked about his experience with the Watergate scandal the whole time. The talk was good, but not what I was expecting.
I was somewhat disappointed. Then at the end of his talk he bore his testimony. “I testify of the reality and Divinity of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ (He then paused for a few seconds) I am a witness of the Resurrection!” As he said this final part, the entire room felt electric. Every hair on my body stood straight up. I felt the Holy Spirit so strongly, but then the devotional was over.

1년 후인 2016년 11월 4일, 크리스토퍼슨 장로님이 제가 다니는 대학교(UVU)에 영적 모임을 위해 오셨습니다. 이런 경험들 때문에 저는 정말 흥분했습니다. 일찍 가서 좋은 자리를 잡았는데, 그때 장로님은 내내 워터게이트 스캔들 경험에 대해 이야기하셨습니다. 말씀은 좋았지만 제가 기대했던 것과는 달랐습니다.
저는 다소 실망했습니다. 그런데 말씀이 끝날 무렵 장로님이 간증을 하셨습니다. "저는 하나님 아버지와 예수 그리스도의 실재와 신성을 간증합니다. (그분은 잠시 말을 멈추셨다가) 저는 부활의 증인입니다!" 장로님이 이 마지막 말씀을 하시는 순간, 방 전체가 전율하는 듯했습니다. 온몸의 털끝이 곤두섰습니다. 성령을 강하게 느꼈지만, 영적 모임은 그렇게 끝났습니다.

After the devotional, I found my institute professor, he was ecstatic. He then explained that right before he spoke to the students, Elder Christofferson spoke to the Institute professors and staff. He was point-blank asked if he had seen Christ, after explaining that such a question was inappropriate to ask, he then declared: One cannot bear witness of the Resurrection and Divinity of Christ without having had a first-hand witness. At that moment the Spirit then bore witness to my soul: “He KNOWS. He has seen Jesus Christ. He is a true Apostle!”

영적 모임이 끝난 후, 저는 연수회 교수님을 만났습니다. 교수님은 너무나 기뻐하셨습니다. 교수님은 학생들에게 말씀하시기 직전에 크리스토퍼슨 장로님께서 연수회 교수진과 직원들에게 말씀하셨다고 설명하셨습니다. 장로님께서는 그리스도를 보셨느냐고 단도직입적으로 물으셨고, 그런 질문은 적절하지 않다고 설명하신 후, 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. "직접 목격하지 않고서는 그리스도의 부활과 신성을 증거할 수 없습니다." 바로 그때, 영이 제 영혼에 이렇게 증거하셨습니다. "그분은 알고 계십니다. 예수 그리스도를 보셨습니다. 그분은 참된 사도이십니다!"

I wanted to share this string of stories with you today as Elder Christofferson has been called into the First Presidency. Many people are seeking a confirm‎ing testimony that President D. Todd Christofferson was called of God. I want to testify that he is an apostle, and he was called of God. That he truly is the man the Lord wanted to serve in the First Presidency at this time.

오늘 크리스토퍼슨 장로님께서 제일회장단으로 부름받으심에 따라, 저는 이 일련의 이야기를 여러분과 나누고 싶었습니다. 많은 사람들이 디 토드 크리스토퍼슨 회장님이 하나님의 부름을 받았다는 확증의 간증을 구하고 있습니다. 저는 그가 사도이며, 하나님의 부름을 받았다는 것을 간증하고 싶습니다. 그가 바로 주님께서 이 시대에 제일회장단에서 봉사하기를 원하셨던 분이라는 것을 간증드립니다.
