영국을 대표하는 자연경관 중에서도 그 대표라 할 수 있는 국립공원(national parks)에 대해서 안내드립니다.
영국에는 모두 15개의 국립공원(England 10개, Scotland 2개, Wales 3개)이 있습니다.
이들은 한국이나 세계 여러 다른 나라에 있는 국립공원과는 다소 차이가 있는데요...
국가적으로 보호해야 할 가치가 있는 자연자원으로 인정되면 국가가 소유하여 관리하는 여느 국립공원들과는 달리 영국은 국립공원이라 불리는 지역의 상당 부분이 사유지입니다. 따라서, 이 안에 거주하면서 생활하는 모습이 일반인들이 국립공원에서 즐길 수 있는 경관의 일부를 이루기도 하고 때로는 방문객들에게 편의시설을 제공하며 생계를 유지하기도 합니다. 국립공원이라 하여 입구에서 입장료를 내셔야 하는 것은 아니지만, 공영주차장이나 국립공원에 안에 위치한 명소들을 입장하기 위해서는 admission charge를 지불해야 합니다.
영국에 있는 국립공원의 위치와 특징에 대하여 자세히 소개드립니다.
1. Peak District: 1951년에 영국 최초로 국립공원으로 지정되었으며, 대도시들과는 다소 거리가 있어 접근성이 떨어지는 다른 국립공원들과는 달리 쉐필드, 리즈, 맨체스터, 버밍엄 등과 같은 영국 10대 도시에서 가까워서 연중 많은 방문객들이 찾고 있습니다. Peak District National Park에서 방문할 만한 명소나 즐기실 수 있는 활동들은 아래에서 확인하실 수 있습니다.

7. Northumberland: 잉글랜드에서 가장 북쪽에 위치한 국립공원으로 잉글랜드와 웨일즈에 위치한 국립공원 중에서는 인구밀도가 가장 낮은 곳입니다. 하지만, 공원 안에 산책과 싸이클 그리고 승마를 위한 길이 1,100km에 이를 정도로 잘 관리되어있고 국립자연보호구역과 특별과학대상지 뿐만 아니라 259개의 등재된(listed) 건물들이 있어 자연과 인간의 유산이 조화를 이루고 있는 공원입니다.
