주님께서는 아무도 두 주인을, 곧 하느님과 재물을 함께 섬길 수 없다고 하십니다. 그런데 오늘 주님께서는 “불의한 재물로 친구들을 만들어라.”고 하십니다. 재물은 우리가 사는 데 필요한 최소한의 일용할 양식 정도면 충분합니다. 먹고도 남아 쌓아 놓을 만큼의 재물은 이미 일용할 양식의 범위를 넘어서는 것이므로 섬김의 대상이 됩니다. 이는 우상을 섬기는 것과 다를 바가 없습니다. 하느님이 아니라 재물을 섬기기 때문입니다.
그렇다면 일용할 양식을 넘어설 정도로 쌓여 가는 재물은 어떻게 처리해야 합니까? 주님께서는 그것으로 친구들을 만들라고 하십니다. 그렇지 못한 사람들에게 기꺼이 나누어 주고, 마침내 서로가 하느님 나라의 동반자가 되라는 것입니다. 그러나 만족할 줄 모르는 사람은 결국 재물을 섬기게 되고 말 것입니다. 만족할 줄 모르니 나눌 줄도 모르고, 친구도 없습니다. 친구가 없다면 사랑의 행위, 평화와 정의를 일구는 행위, 곧 믿음의 삶은 거짓말이 되고 맙니다.
아무리 우리가 박사 학위를 받고, 회장 자리에 취임하고, 대통령이 된다 하더라도, 하느님 앞에서는 혐오스러운 것이 될 수 있습니다. 그러므로 사람들 앞에서 높이 평가되어도, 주님 앞에서는 아주 낮은 자 취급을 받게 될지도 모르는 일입니다. |

| 바오로 사도는 필리피 신자들에게 어떤 처지에서도 만족하게 살 줄을 알라고 합니다. 만족하는 삶이야말로 믿는 이들의 필수 항목입니다. 믿는 이들은 모든 것을 주시는 하느님 안에 살고 있기 때문입니다(제1독서). 예수님께서는 아주 작은 일에도 성실해야 한다고 하십니다. 작은 일에 성실하지 못하면 큰일을 할 수 없습니다. 성실하지 못하면 아무도 그에게 참된 것을 맡기지 않을 것이기 때문입니다 (복음). |

Phil 4:10-19
Brothers and sisters:
I rejoice greatly in the Lord
that now at last you revived your concern for me.
You were, of course, concerned about me but lacked an opportunity.
Not that I say this because of need,
for I have learned, in whatever situation I find myself,
to be self-sufficient.
I know indeed how to live in humble circumstances;
I know also how to live with abundance.
In every circumstance and in all things
I have learned the secret of being well fed and of going hungry,
of living in abundance and of being in need.
I have the strength for everything through him who empowers me.
Still, it was kind of you to share in my distress.
You Philippians indeed know that at the beginning of the Gospel,
when I left Macedonia,
not a single church shared with me
in an account of giving and receiving, except you alone.
For even when I was at Thessalonica
you sent me something for my needs,
not only once but more than once.
It is not that I am eager for the gift;
rather, I am eager for the profit that accrues to your account.
I have received full payment and I abound.
I am very well supplied because of what I received from you
through Epaphroditus,
“a fragrant aroma,” an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God.
My God will fully supply whatever you need,
in accord with his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

Jesus said to his disciples:
“I tell you, make friends for yourselves with dishonest wealth,
so that when it fails, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.
The person who is trustworthy in very small matters
is also trustworthy in great ones;
and the person who is dishonest in very small matters
is also dishonest in great ones.
If, therefore, you are not trustworthy with dishonest wealth,
who will trust you with true wealth?
If you are not trustworthy with what belongs to another,
who will give you what is yours?
No servant can serve two masters.
He will either hate one and love the other,
or be devoted to one and despise the other.
You cannot serve God and mammon.”
The Pharisees, who loved money,
heard all these things and sneered at him.
And he said to them,
“You justify yourselves in the sight of others,
but God knows your hearts;
for what is of human esteem is an abomination in the sight of God.”
