예수님께서 “나를 사랑하느냐?”고 베드로에게 세 번이나 물으십니다. 그때마다 베드로는 “제가 주님을 사랑하는 줄을 주님께서 아십니다.”라고 대답합니다. 자기 한 목숨을 살리려고 스승을 배반한 자신의 모습을 바라보는 베드로의 심정은 어떠했을까요? 베드로는 스승을 배반한 자기 자신이 한없이 밉고 혐오스러웠을 것입니다.
이런 베드로에게 예수님께서 다시 신뢰를 주십니다. 예수님께서는 베드로의 내면 깊은 곳에 있는 당신에 대한 신뢰를 불러 일깨워 주십니다. 그래서 “너는 나를 사랑하느냐?” 하고 거듭 물으신 것입니다. 베드로는 평소 예수님께 신앙 고백을 자주 해 왔습니다. 그러나 예수님께서 붙잡히시어 사형 선고를 받으신 뒤에는 ‘나는 그분을 모른다.’며 부인한 사람입니다. 예수님의 구체적인 질문을 거듭해서 들은 베드로는 점점 십자가에 달리신 예수님께 다가갑니다. 그리고 이제야 비로소 예수님을 진정으로 이해하고 사랑하게 됩니다.
베드로에게 답변을 들으신 예수님께서는 “내 양들을 돌보아라.” 하고 당부하십니다. 자기만 살려고 하는 사람, 자기 목숨을 내놓을 수 없는 사람은 목자가 될 수 없습니다. 베드로는 자기를 내어놓는 것이 사랑이며 십자가 죽음 위에 피어난 생명이 부활임을 뒤늦게 깨달은 것입니다.

예루살렘의 수석 사제들과 유다인들의 원로들은 바오로를 페스투스 총독에게 고발합니다. 바오로는 재판이 불리하게 진행되자 로마 시민권을 내세워 총독에게 자신은 로마에 가서 재판을 받고 싶다고 상소합니다(제1독서). 부활하신 예수님께서는 베드로에게 “너는 나를 사랑하느냐?” 하고 세 번이나 물으십니다. 이는 베드로에게 사랑의 마음을 깊이 새겨 주시려는 것입니다. 주님에 대한 사랑이 없이는 주님의 양들을 제대로 돌볼 수 없습니다(복음).

Friday of the Seventh Week of Easter

Reading 1 Acts 25:13b-21

King Agrippa and Bernice arrived in Caesarea
on a visit to Festus.
Since they spent several days there,
Festus referred Paul's case to the king, saying,
"There is a man here left in custody by Felix.
When I was in Jerusalem the chief priests and the elders of the Jews
brought charges against him and demanded his condemnation.
I answered them that it was not Roman practice
to hand over an accused person before he has faced his accusers
and had the opportunity to defend himself against their charge.
So when they came together here, I made no delay;
the next day I took my seat on the tribunal
and ordered the man to be brought in.
His accusers stood around him,
but did not charge him with any of the crimes I suspected.
Instead they had some issues with him about their own religion
and about a certain Jesus who had died
but who Paul claimed was alive.
Since I was at a loss how to investigate this controversy,
I asked if he were willing to go to Jerusalem
and there stand trial on these charges.
And when Paul appealed that he be held in custody
for the Emperor's decision,
I ordered him held until I could send him to Caesar."

Gospel Jn 21:15-19

After Jesus had revealed himself to his disciples and eaten breakfast with them,
he said to Simon Peter,
"Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?"
Simon Peter answered him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you."
Jesus said to him, "Feed my lambs."
He then said to Simon Peter a second time,
"Simon, son of John, do you love me?"
Simon Peter answered him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you."
He said to him, "Tend my sheep."
He said to him the third time,
"Simon, son of John, do you love me?"
Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time,
"Do you love me?" and he said to him,
"Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you."
Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep.
Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were younger,
you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted;
but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands,
and someone else will dress you
and lead you where you do not want to go."
He said this signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God.
And when he had said this, he said to him, "Follow me."
