요즈음 제주도에서는 ‘올레길’이 주목받고 있습니다. 이 길에는 처음 걷는 사람들도 안전하고 편하게 걸을 수 있도록 중간중간에 파란색의 화살표가 그려져 있습니다. 또 나뭇가지나 전봇대에 파란색 또는 노란색 리본이 달려 있어서, ‘올레꾼’들은 이 표시들을 보면서 자기가 제대로 걷고 있다는 것을 확인하게 됩니다. 다른 곳을 등산할 때에도 이런 표시들을 종종 볼 수 있습니다. 지리산이든 설악산이든 등산로에서 벗어나지 않도록 리본을 달아 표시해 놓습니다.
오늘 복음에서 예수님께서 하신 말씀을 다시 들어 봅시다. “내가 율법이나 예언서들을 폐지하러 온 줄로 생각하지 마라. 폐지하러 온 것이 아니라 오히려 완성하러 왔다.”
우리에게 주어진 크고 작은 계명들은 단지 우리를 구속하려는 명령이 아닙니다. 마치 올레길의 화살표처럼 우리를 안내하는 것입니다. 올레길에서 ‘그냥 목적지까지만 가면 되는 것이지 굳이 표시를 따라갈 필요가 있을까?’ 하는 마음으로 걸으면 어느새 길을 잃어버리고 맙니다. 등산할 때에도 리본의 표시를 무시하면 등산로를 이탈하여 위험에 빠지기 쉽습니다.
그렇습니다. 주님의 여러 가지 명령은 우리가 구원의 길을 더욱더 안전하고 확실하게 걷게 하시려는 화살표와 리본의 역할, 곧 구원의 길을 밝히는 등불의 역할을 합니다. 오늘 예수님께서 작은 계명이라도 소홀히 하지 말라고 당부하신 것은, 우리 모두가 안전하고 효과적으로 하느님 나라의 삶을 살 수 있기를 바라시기 때문입니다. |

| 바오로 사도는 자신과 동료들이 새 계약의 일꾼이 된 것은 스스로 특출해서가 아니라 하느님께서 그 자격을 주셨다고 고백합니다. 그리고 구약의 직분이 문자의 직분이요 죽음으로 끝나는 직분이라면, 새 계약의 직분은 성령의 직분이며 생명의 직분이라고 전합니다(제1독서). 예수님께서는 율법이나 예언서를 폐지하시러 오신 것이 아니라 오히려 완성하시러 오셨다고 가르치시며, 계명을 충실히 지키는 이는 하늘 나라에서 큰사람이라고 불릴 것이라고 말씀하십니다(복음). |

Brothers and sisters:
Such confidence we have through Christ toward God.
Not that of ourselves we are qualified to take credit
for anything as coming from us;
rather, our qualification comes from God,
who has indeed qualified us as ministers of a new covenant,
not of letter but of spirit;
for the letter brings death, but the Spirit gives life.
Now if the ministry of death, carved in letters on stone, was so glorious
that the children of Israel could not look intently at the face of Moses
because of its glory that was going to fade,
how much more will the ministry of the Spirit be glorious?
For if the ministry of condemnation was glorious,
the ministry of righteousness will abound much more in glory.
Indeed, what was endowed with glory
has come to have no glory in this respect
because of the glory that surpasses it.
For if what was going to fade was glorious,
how much more will what endures be glorious.

Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place. Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the Kingdom of heaven. But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.”
