오늘 복음에서 예수님께서는 세리 레위를 제자로 부르십니다. 그리고 이어지는 장면에서 우리는 주님의 기쁜 소식을 알아듣기 위한 우리의 마음이 어떠해야 하는지를 묵상하게 됩니다.
복음에 나오는 바리사이들은 처음에는 예수님에 대한 관심과 존경으로 그분과 함께하고 싶어 했을 것입니다. 그런데 이러한 마음은 근본적으로 예수님을 자신들과 ‘같은 수준’의 의인으로 여긴 호감에서 비롯된 것이었기에, 그들은 예수님께서 죄인들과 식사하시며 함께하시는 것에 강한 불쾌감을 느낍니다. 그러한 그들에게 예수님께서는 오히려 당신께서 죄인들을 위하여 이 세상에 왔다고 단언하십니다. 이제 예수님의 식탁에 함께할 수 있는 복은 스스로 의롭다고 자부심을 느끼는 이들의 몫이 아니라, 오히려 스스로 죄인임을 깨닫고 자비를 절실하게 구하는 이들에게 주님께서 함께하시며 은총을 넘치게 주신다는 사실이 분명해집니다.
죄인임을 깨닫고 주님의 자비를 구하는 마음이, 주님을 찾으려 하는 모든 시대의 어떤 처지의 사람에게도 반드시 필요하다는 사실을 보여 준 좋은 모범이 아우구스티노 성인입니다. 불멸의 명저 『고백록』에서 그는 투명한 열정으로 독자들을 “일상은 고양, 위로, 관조가 아니라 자신의 비참함의 체험이며, 그것은 낙담과 절망의 경계로 이어지는 것”이라는 진실과 대면시킵니다. 또한 이러한 죄인의 아파하는 마음에서 어떻게 은총의 광채가 빛나는지를 보여 줍니다. 바리사이들은 이 마음이 구원의 시작임을 인정하지 못하고 이제 예수님을 미워하기 시작합니다.
이러한 내면의 갈림길은, 비록 겉으로 드러나지는 않지만 우리 안에도 역시 있을 수 있습니다. 예수님을 자신의 삶에 초대하고 싶다면, 먼저 오만함을 버리고 스스로 죄인임을 깨닫는 가운데 이웃과 함께할 수 있는 은총을 구해야 하겠습니다. |

| 사무엘이 사울을 처음으로 만났을 때 주님께서는 사무엘에게 사울이 이스라엘 백성을 다스릴 사람임을 깨닫게 하십니다(제1독서). 예수님께서 세관인 레위를 부르시고 그의 집에서 식사하실 때 많은 세리와 죄인이 그분과 함께 자리했습니다. 예수님께서는 이를 못마땅하게 여기고 비난하는 바리사이파 율법 학자들에게 바로 이러한 죄인들을 부르러 당신께서 오셨다고 분명하게 밝히십니다(복음). |

(일치 주간)
제2차 바티칸 공의회(1962-1965년)는 ‘일치 운동에 관한 교령’을 통하여, 가톨릭 신자들에게 다른 그리스도인들과 더불어 일치를 위하여 기도하고 노력할 것을 권장하였습니다. 이러한 뜻에 따라 교회는 해마다 1월 18일부터 성 바오로 사도의 회심 축일인 25일까지를 ‘일치 주간’으로 정하고, 그리스도인들의 일치를 간구하는 공동 기도를 바치고 있습니다.

Saturday of the First Week in Ordinary Time

There was a stalwart man from Benjamin named Kish,
who was the son of Abiel, son of Zeror,
son of Becorath, son of Aphiah, a Benjaminite.
He had a son named Saul, who was a handsome young man.
There was no other child of Israel more handsome than Saul;
he stood head and shoulders above the people.
Now the asses of Saul’s father, Kish, had wandered off.
Kish said to his son Saul, “Take one of the servants with you
and go out and hunt for the asses.”
Accordingly they went through the hill country of Ephraim,
and through the land of Shalishah.
Not finding them there,
they continued through the land of Shaalim without success.
They also went through the land of Benjamin,
but they failed to find the animals.
When Samuel caught sight of Saul, the LORD assured him,
“This is the man of whom I told you; he is to govern my people.”
Saul met Samuel in the gateway and said,
“Please tell me where the seer lives.”
Samuel answered Saul: “I am the seer.
Go up ahead of me to the high place and eat with me today.
In the morning, before dismissing you,
I will tell you whatever you wish.”
Then, from a flask he had with him, Samuel poured oil on Saul’s head;
he also kissed him, saying:
“The LORD anoints you commander over his heritage.
You are to govern the LORD’s people Israel,
and to save them from the grasp of their enemies roundabout.
“This will be the sign for you
that the LORD has anointed you commander over his heritage.”
R. (2a) Lord, in your strength the king is glad.
O LORD, in your strength the king is glad;
in your victory how greatly he rejoices!
You have granted him his heart’s desire;
you refused not the wish of his lips.
R. Lord, in your strength the king is glad.
For you welcomed him with goodly blessings,
you placed on his head a crown of pure gold.
He asked life of you: you gave him
length of days forever and ever.
R. Lord, in your strength the king is glad.
Great is his glory in your victory;
majesty and splendor you conferred upon him.
For you made him a blessing forever;
you gladdened him with the joy of your face.

Jesus went out along the sea.
All the crowd came to him and he taught them.
As he passed by, he saw Levi, son of Alphaeus,
sitting at the customs post.
Jesus said to him, “Follow me.”
And he got up and followed Jesus.
While he was at table in his house,
many tax collectors and sinners sat with Jesus and his disciples;
for there were many who followed him.
Some scribes who were Pharisees saw that Jesus was eating with sinners
and tax collectors and said to his disciples,
“Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
Jesus heard this and said to them,
“Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do.
I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.”
