Chung Hyun-ho, a Samsung Electronics vice chairman better known as the right-hand man of Executive Chairman Lee Jae-yong, will step down from his current post of leading the management control tower of the tech empire and focus on Lee’s secretarial role, according to the company, Friday.
이재용 삼성전자 회장의 오른팔로 알려진 정현호 삼성전자 부회장이 삼성그룹 경영 컨트롤타워를 이끄는 현직에서 물러나 이재용 회장의 비서 역할에 집중한다고 금요일 삼성전자가 밝혔다.
The role will be assumed by President Park Hark-kyu, who has held top management support positions across multiple Samsung Electronics divisions.
이 역할은 삼성전자 여러 사업부에서 최고 경영자 지원 직책을 맡아온 박학규 사장이 맡게 된다.
Samsung Electronics announced its executive reshuffle affecting its Business Support Task Force, a behind-the-scenes organization that worked as the de facto decision-making body serving the chairman.
삼성전자는 회장을 위한 실질적인 의사결정 기구 역할을 했던 비서실 조직인 사업지원TF에 영향을 미치는 임원인사를 발표했다.
Following the reshuffle, the task force will be upgraded into the Business Support Office and will be a standing organization assuming its existing roles and functions — coordinating business between Samsung Electronics and its affiliates and supporting key decision-making processes.
이번 개편에 따라 TF는 경영지원실(Business Support Office)로 승격되어 기존 역할과 기능을 수행하는 상설 조직으로 운영된다. TF는 삼성전자와 계열사 간 사업 조정 및 주요 의사결정 지원 역할을 담당한다.
The task force was widely viewed as the successor to the Future Strategy Office, which previously served as the control tower of Samsung Group but was disbanded in 2017 in the wake of Chairman Lee’s involvement in the corruption scandal of former President Park Geun-hye.
TF는 과거 삼성그룹의 컨트롤타워 역할을 했으나, 2017년 이 회장의 박근혜 전 대통령 비리 연루 사건으로 해체된 미래전략실의 후신으로 평가받았다.
“Since the task force has remained as a temporary organization for a long time, the reshuffle is aimed at stabilizing the organization,” a Samsung Electronics official said, adding the new office is smaller than the Future Strategy Office and is “nothing to do with reestablishing a control tower.”
삼성전자 관계자는 "TF가 오랫동안 임시 조직으로 운영되어 왔기 때문에 이번 개편은 조직 안정화를 위한 것"이라며, "새로운 TF는 미래전략실보다 규모가 작으며 컨트롤타워를 재정립하는 것과는 무관하다"고 설명했다.
Park, the head of the new office, is known as an expert in financial affairs and business management, serving key management roles in Samsung Electronics’ display, mobile and other divisions. In 2020, he became the chief financial officer (CFO) for Samsung Electronics’ chipmaking Device Solutions (DS) division and served as the CFO for the Device Experience division of the company from 2022 to November last year, when he moved to the task force.
박학규 신임 실장은 재무 및 경영 전문가로 알려져 있으며, 삼성전자 디스플레이, 모바일 등 주요 사업부에서 핵심 경영 역할을 담당하고 있다. 2020년 삼성전자 반도체 사업부 디바이스솔루션(DS) 부문 최고재무책임자(CFO)로 임명된 그는 2022년부터 지난해 11월까지 디바이스익스피리언스(DX) 부문 최고재무책임자(CFO)를 역임한 후, TF로 자리를 옮긴 후 TF에 합류했다.
Outgoing vice chairman Chung is one of Samsung Electronics’ two vice chairmen along, with Jun Young-hyun of the DS division. Chung had been leading the task force since its establishment in 2017, cementing his position as Chairman Lee’s top strategic advisor.

During his tenure, Samsung Group established its current decentralized governance structure, but questions have been raised about his strategy since last year, as the DS division lost its technological lead, which resulted in a slowdown in Samsung Electronics’ overall profitability. This triggered suspicions that Chung, a finance expert, may have missed key investment opportunities while exercising his financial approach.
정 부회장의 재임 기간 동안 삼성그룹은 현재의 분권형 지배구조를 확립했지만, 지난해 DS 부문의 기술 주도권 상실로 삼성전자의 전반적인 수익성이 둔화되면서 정 부회장의 전략에 대한 의문이 제기되었다. 이는 금융 전문가인 정 사장이 재무적 접근방식을 활용하면서 중요한 투자 기회를 놓쳤을 수 있다는 의혹을 불러일으켰다.
The reshuffle comes as Samsung Electronics showed a strong rebound in the third quarter of this year, posting record-high quarterly sales of 86.1 trillion won ($59 billion). Chung’s new position is reportedly an honorary one, and he is said to have expressed his intention to step back to foster the next generation of leaders now that the company’s business has returned to a stable growth track.

Friday’s reshuffle is also seen as marking a new phase for Samsung Electronics, which had taken a passive stance over the past decade due to legal obstacles surrounding the consolidation of Lee’s leadership. In July, Korea’s Supreme Court acquitted him of charges related to a controversial merger between two Samsung affiliates, freeing him from his most significant legal burden.
금요일에 이루어진 인사는 이 회장의 리더십 공고화를 둘러싼 법적 장애물로 인해 지난 10년간 소극적인 자세를 취해 온 삼성전자에 새로운 국면을 알리는 신호로 여겨진다. 지난 7월, 대법원은 두 삼성 계열사 간 논란이 된 합병 관련 혐의에 대해 무죄 판결을 내려 가장 큰 법적 부담에서 벗어나게 되었다.
