The Bosingak bell-ringing ceremony offers one of Seoul’s most time-honored New Year traditions. Located in the city’s historic center, the event dates back to the 1392-1910 Joseon Dynasty. Each year, city officials, celebrities and residents ring the bell 33 times before tens of thousands of spectators. The number 33 symbolizes peace and safety in Buddhism. Visitors should expect large crowds and are strongly advised to use public transportation as roads near the venue will be closed. Taking the subway is the best option for getting in and out. The closest station is Jonggak Station on Seoul Metro Line 1 and Euljiro 1-ga Station on Line 2.

보신각 타종식은 서울에서 가장 유서 깊은 새해 전통 행사 중 하나이다. 도시의 역사적인 중심지에서 열리는 이 행사는 1392년부터 1910년까지 이어진 조선 시대로 거슬러 올라간다. 매년 시 공무원, 유명 인사, 시민들이 수만 명의 관중 앞에서 종을 33번 울린다. 숫자 33은 불교에서 평화와 안전을 상징한다. 행사장 주변 도로가 통제될 예정이므로 많은 인파가 예상되며, 대중교통 이용을 적극 권장한다. 지하철을 이용하는 것이 가장 편리하며, 가장 가까운 역은 서울 지하철 1호선 종각역과 2호선 을지로1가역이다.

Gwanghwamun Square will host a wide variety of celebrations that combine tradition and contemporary culture. With the main gate of Gyeongbok Palace as the backdrop, Seoul Light Gwanghwamun will feature gugak (traditional Korean music) performances, a hanbok (traditional Korean attire) fashion show, and large-scale light shows and media art shedding light on the area’s past, present and future. The night will culminate in a countdown, with performances by singer Yoon Min-soo and alternative band Balming Tiger. Large crowds are expected. The nearest station is Gwanghwamun Station on Seoul Metro Line 5.

광화문 광장에서는 전통과 현대 문화가 어우러진 다채로운 축제가 펼쳐질 예정이다. 경복궁 정문을 배경으로 펼쳐지는 서울 라이트 광화문 행사에서는 국악 공연, 한복 패션쇼, 그리고 광화문의 과거, 현재, 미래를 조명하는 대규모 조명 쇼와 미디어 아트가 선보인다. 밤의 대미는 가수 윤민수와 얼터너티브 밴드 발밍 타이거의 공연과 함께 펼쳐지는 카운트다운으로 장식될 예정이다. 많은 인파가 몰릴 것으로 예상된다. 가장 가까운 역은 서울 지하철 5호선 광화문역이다.

Myeong-dong Square Global Countdown Show

명동 광장 글로벌 카운트다운 쇼

Visitors already in Myeong-dong, Seoul’s main shopping district, can stay put for a New Year’s Eve countdown accompanied by a media show. For the first time, the tourist district will host a countdown event using media facades installed throughout the area. The facade of Shinsegae Department Store the Main will serve as the main stage for the show, featuring a variety of media shows and a countdown. The show will run from 11 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., accompanied by fireworks. The closest station is Euljiro 1-ga Station on Seoul Metro Line 2 and Myeongdong Station on Line 4.

서울의 중심 쇼핑가인 명동에 있는 방문객들은 미디어 쇼와 함께 펼쳐지는 새해맞이 카운트다운을 현장에서 바로 즐길 수 있다. 이번에 처음으로 명동 곳곳에 설치된 미디어 파사드를 활용한 카운트다운 행사가 개최된다. 신세계백화점 본점 외관이 메인 무대로 활용되어 다양한 미디어 쇼와 카운트다운이 펼쳐진다. 쇼는 밤 11시부터 새벽 12시 30분까지 불꽃놀이와 함께 진행된다. 가장 가까운 역은 서울 지하철 2호선 을지로1가역과 4호선 명동역이다.

서울 라이트 DDP

The Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) has recently emerged as another New Year’s Eve venue, with its iconic facade designed by architect Zaha Hadid transforming into massive media art. The countdown event, Seoul Light DDP, will include a performance by Korean band The Solutions and a dance party led by DJ G-Park. Get there using Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station on Seoul Metro Lines 2, 4 and 5.

동대문 디자인 플라자(DDP)는 건축가 자하 하디드가 설계한 상징적인 외관이 거대한 미디어 아트로 변모하면서 최근 새해맞이 명소로 떠오르고 있다. 카운트다운 행사 '서울 라이트 DDP'에서는 한국 밴드 더 솔루션즈의 공연과 DJ G-Park이 이끄는 댄스 파티가 펼쳐진다. 서울 지하철 2호선, 4호선, 5호선 동대문문화공원역에서 오면 된다.

Families looking to celebrate outdoors can consider the Seoul Plaza Ice Skating Rink, which will operate special hours from 11:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. on New Year’s Eve. The late-night session will include a countdown event and a DJ performance. The Seoul Lantern Festival along Cheonggye Stream is another family-friendly option. The ongoing festival features illuminated sculptures, including human figures and animals, that are particularly appealing to children. The stream is within walking distance of Seoul Plaza and Gwanghwamun Square. South of the Han River, the Gangnam Media Art Festival near Samseong Station on Seoul Metro Line 2 and Bongeunsa Station on Line 9 offers large-scale projections on building facades. The show features a foal transforming into a dynamic fire horse, a visual spectacle to entertain visitors of all ages.

야외에서 새해를 맞이하고 싶은 가족이라면 서울광장 아이스링크를 추천한다. 새해 전날 밤 11시 30분부터 새벽 12시 30분까지 특별 운영하며, 카운트다운 행사와 DJ 공연도 즐길 수 있다. 청계천에서 열리는 서울등불 축제도 가족 단위 방문객에게 좋은 선택이다. 현재 진행 중인 이 축제에서는 사람과 동물을 비롯한 다양한 형상의 조명 조형물이 전시되어 아이들에게 특히 인기가 좋다. 청계천은 서울광장과 광화문에서 가까운 거리에 있다. 한강 남쪽에서는 서울 지하철 2호선 삼성역과 9호선 봉은사역 인근에서 강남미디어아트축제가 열린다. 건물 외벽에 대형 영상이 투사되는 이 축제에서는 망아지가 불꽃 말로 변신하는 장관을 감상할 수 있으며, 남녀노소 누구나 즐길 수 있다.

For those planning to welcome the new year at home, watching a movie or drama can make for a cozy gathering.
