Two silver piccolos from my collection, both dating from the 1870s. The one on the left, marked Rudall, Rose & Carte, is an 1867 Patent piccolo made in 1871. The one on the right, marked Rudall Carte, was made in 1876. (The firm dropped Rose's name in 1872.) These two piccolos were made before the days of seamless tubing, so they would have been made from sheet, soldered into a tube. Piccolos are conical, tapering down to the foot, with a flare at the end. On most metal piccolos the flare is soldered on, so there is a joint. These two, remarkably, are each made in one piece. The close-up shows the flared end of the 1867 Patent instrument.
