눈물로 씨를 뿌리는 교회
(시 126:3-6, 쉬운) [3] 여호와는 우리를 위하여 위대한 일을 행하셨습니다. 우리는 너무나 기쁩니다. [4] 여호와여, 포로된 우리를 자유롭게 해 주소서. 네게브 사막을 흐르는 시내처럼 자유롭게 해 주소서. [5] 눈물을 흘리며 씨를 뿌리는 사람은 기쁨의 노래를 부르며 추수할 것입니다. [6] 울며 씨를 뿌리러 나가는 사람은 기뻐 노래하며 추수단을 들고 돌아올 것입니다.
(갈 6:7-9, 쉬운) [7] 스스로 속이지 마십시오. 하나님을 속일 수는 없습니다. 사람은 자기가 심은 대로 거둘 것입니다. [8] 자기 육체의 욕망대로 심는 사람은 육체로부터 썩을 것을 거둘 것이며, 성령의 뜻을 따라 심는 사람은 성령으로부터 영원한 생명을 거둘 것입니다. [9] 선한 일을 하다가 낙심하지 말아야 합니다. 때가 이르면, 영원한 생명을 거둘 것이므로 포기하지 말아야 합니다.
시각장애인 윤 인수목사님이 계십니다. 이 분은 북한에서 6.25 때, 모든 재산을 잃고 고향도 잃고 떠났습니다. 어머니는 중병으로 집에 누워계시고, 본인은 시각장애인 임에도 불구하고 친구에게 도움을 받아 신문배달을 하고 구두닦이도 하면서 어렵게 살았습니다. 그렇게 해서 번 돈을 모아 어머니에게 갖다 드렸더니 어머님께서 “얘야 십일조 내라, 감사헌금해라 먼저 하나님 앞에 드려야 된다.”말씀하셨습니다.
그 말에 어린 인수는 “하나님이 계시면 어떻게 우리 집이 이렇게 망하고, 어머니는 편찮으시고, 나는 이렇게 장애인이 될 수 있다는 말입니까?”고 대답했습니다. 그의 입에서 감사 대신 불평만 한없이 나오는 것을 보시고 그의 어머니께서 말씀하셨습니다. “얘야 너 그런 말 하면 안 된다. 고향 잃은 것도 슬프고, 집 잃은 것도 원통하고, 건강 잃은 것도 서러운데 하나님까지 잃고 믿음을 떠나면 우리가 어떻게 이걸 해결 할 수 있겠니? 하나님을 믿어야 건강도 회복하고 가정도 회복하고 우리가 일어날 수 있단다. 그런데 우리가 어렵다고 하나님을 원망해버리면 누가 우리를 건져주겠니? 이럴수록 더 잘 믿고 감사해야 한단다.”
이후로 그는 불평 대신 감사하기 시작했습니다. 그랬더니 하나님께서 그분의 삶을 인도하셔서 물질의 축복도 받아 형통하게 되었고 장로가 되었습니다. 그리고 마침내 목사가 되어 하나님의 복음 전하는 일에 남은 일생을 드리는 축복을 받았습니다.
우리나라에 최초로 복음을 들고 온 언더우드 선교사의 증손자인 연세대학교 원 한광 교수가 몇 해 전 미국으로 돌아가면서 이런 말을 했다고 합니다. “한국에 사는 동안 단 한 번도 경기가 좋아졌다, 살만하게 되었다는 말을 들어 보지 못했다.”고 하였답니다. 한국인들은 감사할 줄 모른다는 말입니다. 욕심 때문에 감사를 잃어버린 것이 아닌가 하는 생각이 듭니다.
루터는 “마귀의 세계엔 감사가 없다”라고 했습니다. C.S. 루이스는 “사람의 마음에서 감사를 빼면 바로 지옥으로 변한다.”라고 했습니다. “항상 기뻐하라, 쉬지 말고 기도하라, 범사에 감사하라.”고 하셨습니다. 오늘 감사로 예배를 드려 하나님께 영광 돌리기 바랍니다.
오늘, 우리교회가 이제 9 돌, 센터는 11 돌을 맞이하여 9주년 감사예배와 맥추감사주일로 하나님께 예배드립니다. 2001년 7월 6일 천안 임마누엘 선교회란 이름으로 센터 창립기념예배를 드렸고 2003년부터 외국인교회로 예배를 드렸습니다.
휴먼터치 센터와 외국인교회를 세우게 하시고 오늘 여기까지 인도해 주신 하나님께 감사와 영광을 돌립니다. 아무것도 없고 할일만 많은 이곳에서 이름도, 빛도 없이 수고하신 우리성도들에게도 감사드립니다. 그리고 지쳐 쓸어 질 정도로 힘써 주님의 일하다가 떠나간 성도들에게도 감사를 드립니다. 특별히, 우리교회 나와 예수를 믿고, 자기나라로 돌아간 형제자매들이 많습니다. 아프리카, 전 아시아, 벨로루시, 몰바도, 러시아, 몽골까지 세계에 퍼져 예수 믿고 있습니다. 이곳을 생각하며 오늘 예배드리고 있을 성도들에게도 감사드립니다.
하나님의 풍성한 축복이 우리교회와 성도님들의 가정에 항상 충만하기를 축원합니다.
돌이켜 보면 “에벤에셀”의 하나님, - 순간순간 여기까지 도우신 하나님이 우리 곁에 계셨습니다. 우리는 어떻게 하여야 할지도 모르고, 가진 것도 별로 없었습니다. 그러나 주께서 이곳에 교회와 센터의 보금자리를 틀게 해주셨습니다. 주님의 생명을 받아 예쁘게 성장하고 있게 하셨습니다. 비록 10살 어린아이 같은 교회지만 예수 사랑과 복음의 아름다운 씨앗을 세계에 뿌리게 하셨습니다.
우리교회를 어떻게 생각하시나요? 정말 아름다운 교회입니다.
시133편을 봅시다. “형제가 연합하여 동거함 어찌 그리 선하고 아름다운고, 머리에 있는 보배로운 기름이 수염 곧 아론의 수염에 흘러서 그 옷깃까지 내림 같고 헤르몬의 이슬 같이 시온의 산들에 내림 같도다. 거기서 여호와께서 복을 명하셨나니 곧 영생이로다.”
우리교회는 세계 여러 나라의 형제자매들이 예수 이름으로, 예수 사랑으로 모였습니다. 그러니 이 시편 말씀이 바로 우리 교회를 말하지 않습니까? 이제, 우리가 서로에게 조금만 더 관심을 갖고 성도의 교제에 힘쓴다면 세상에서 제일 아름다운 교회가 될 것입니다. 분발하시기 바랍니다.
우리교회를 어떻게 생각하시나요? 정말 힘 있는 교회입니다.
한계의 장벽을 뛰어넘는 교회입니다. 사데교회 같이 적은 능력을 가지고 주님의 사랑으로 세상을 섬기는 교회입니다. 서머나 교회 같이 가난한 것 같지만 실상은 부요한 교회입니다. 여러분이 주님을 사랑하는 마음으로 교회를 섬길 때 하나님께서 교회를 축복하셨습니다. 사랑으로 외국형제자매를 섬길 때 하나님은 우리교회를 세계적인 교회되게 하셨습니다.
신부동 그리고 천안이란 지역사회를 넘어선 교회되게 하셨습니다. 한국이라는 국가와 민족, 인종과 언어의 장벽도 뛰어 넘어선 교회되게 하셨습니다. 빈부와 지식의 격차를 허물고, 문화와 사상을 뛰어넘고, 예수사랑으로 서로 부둥켜안고 행복한 찬송을 부르는 교회되게 하셨습니다. 이상적인 교회를 우주적(코스모스) 교회라고 합니다. 우리교회가 바로 그런 교회의 모습이지 않습니까?
이런 교회를 만들어 주신 하나님께 모든 존귀와 영광 돌리고 감사합시다.
땅콩이나 고구마는 겉으로 보면 열매가 보이지 않습니다. 그러나 가을에 거둘 때 보면 땅 속에서 아름답고 풍성한 열매들이 덩이덩이 나옵니다. 우리교회도 외국인선교하는 교회라 서 예수 믿고 믿음이 들을만하면 다 자기 나라로 떠납니다. 그래서 겉으로 들어나는 열매는 없습니다. 우리교회는 못자리교회요, 심기만 하는 교회입니다. 그러나 낙심하지 않고 복음을 뿌리고 예수사랑을 심으면 주님께서 인정하시는 날 하나님께서 기뻐하실 풍성한 열매를 거둘 줄 믿습니다.
씨 뿌리는 것으로 끝나는 것 같고 아무 소득 없는 것 같더라도 실망하지 맙시다.
전도서 11장 1절에, “너는 네 식물을 물 위에 던지라 여러 날 후에 도로 찾으리라” 시편 126편에, “눈물을 흘리며 씨를 뿌리는 자는 기쁨으로 거두리로다. 울며 씨를 뿌리러 나가는 자는 정녕 기쁨으로 그 단을 가지고 돌아오리로다.”고 말씀하셨습니다. 우리교회의 힘과 정성을 다하여 복음의 씨를 뿌립시다. 예수 사랑을 심읍시다. 우리가 못 거두면 주님께서 천사들을 시켜 거두어 천국창고에 들이실 것입니다.

지난 12년 동안 수고 많이 하셨습니다. 벌써 지쳐서 번 아웃 된 분들이 있어요. 외국인선교하는 일이 열매도 없는 것 같고, 헛 힘만 쓰는 일 같지요. 그래도 낙심하지 말고 더욱 힘씁시다. 데살로니가후서 3장13절에서 “형제들아 너희는 선을 행하다가 낙심치 말라,” 갈라디아서 6장9절에서는 “우리가 선을 행하되 낙심하지 말지니 피곤하지 아니하면 때가 이르매 거두리라.”고 격려하셨습니다. 힘들고 앞이 안보일 때 일수록 우리 서로 서로 격려하면서 선교에 더욱 힘쓰십시다.
우리의 정체성, 우리의 비전과 목표를 바로 세워야 합니다.
외국인교회는 이 건물이 아니라 예수 그리스도를 믿는 여러분 한분, 한분과 제가, 바로 외국인교회입니다. 하나님 안에, 여기 모인 여러분과 제가 주님의 교회입니다. 이제 우리교회가 아동기를 보내고 10대 청소년기로 들어가게 되었습니다. 우리의 정체성, 우리의 비전과 목표를 바로 세워야 합니다.
시계에서 1분에 해당 되는 각도는 약 6도라고 합니다.'달로 향하는 우주선이 지구를 떠날 때에 6도가 틀어지면 달의 예정된 착륙지점에 도달 할 때는 2만Km나 떨어진 곳으로 가게 된다고 합니다. 6도 차이가 빚은 결과입니다. 우리가 어떤 비전을 보고, 목표를 어디에 두느냐는 문제는 매우 중요합니다.
지난 화요일 여수엑스포에 가서 해양문명 도서관에 갔었습니다. 저는 거기서 콜럼부스가 대서양을 건너 신대륙을 찾은 해양역사를 보았습니다. 이로 인하여 스페인이 세계로 뻗어 나갔고 세계대국으로 성장하였습니다.
러시아 할아버지들을 봅시다. 그들은 영토 확장에 대한 비전이 있었습니다. 그리고 선교라는 분명한 사명이 있었어요. 그 결과 베링해협까지 확장했습니다. 동에서 서쪽 끝까지 시차가 11시간입니다. 천연자원 보고인 그 넓은 국토를 얻었습니다. 영국 할아버지들도 보십시오. 세계를 제패했습니다.
옛날 우리국토는 만주, 그리고 연해주까지였습니다. 가서 말뚝만 밖아 놓았어도 알래스카까지 우리 땅 되었을 겁니다. 그런데 우리 할아버지들은 양반 상놈 그리고 명당이나 찾으면서 무덤 쓸 궁리만 했어요. 그리고 3년 상을 치렀습니다. 과거 급제나 하여 입신양명하는 것, 이런 것들 외엔 별 비전이 없었어요. 그래서 그 넓은 땅 다 잃어버리고 이 조그만 나라, 그것마저도 반 토막 만들어놓았습니다.
지도자의 비전과 백성의 힘이 만나야 합니다. 그 위에 하나님의 축복이 있어야 합니다.
국가도 그렇고, 가정도, 교회도 그렇습니다. 가장 중요한 것이 무엇이고, 무엇이 핵심인가를 바로 파악해야 합니다. 미래를 바라보아야 합니다. 그래서 궁극적인 가치를 붙잡아야 합니다. 내일이 없는 오늘을 살아갈 것이 아니라 내일을 더 풍요롭게 할 아름다운 오늘을 살아가야 합니다.
하나님이 우리교회를 통해, 나와 여러분을 통해 이 역사 속에서 하시고자 하는 놀라운 일을 비전으로 보기 바랍니다.
하나님이 이 세상 속에서 하시고자 하는 일을 우리교회의 목표로 삼아야합니다. 하나님이 기뻐하실 수 있는 교회로 성장하기를 소원합니다. 세상에 빛과 소금이 되는 교회가 되기를 기도합니다. 구원의 방주가 되고, 축복의 기관이 되기를 축원합니다. 하나님 나라를 세우는 교회가 되기를 간구합니다. 우리교회가 이렇게 되기를 예수이름으로 축원합니다.
우리 교회를 세계적인 코스모스 교회로 발전시키기를 바랍니다.
오늘 우리교회가 정체성의 문제, 그리고 우리교회가 지향해야 할 목표를 확실하게 확립해야 할 중대한 기점에 서있습니다. 오늘 우리가 어렵다고 선교를 포기하면 우리교회를 신부동 지하 1층 안에 가둬버리고 건물도 없는 작은 교회로 전락시킬 수도 있습니다.
반대로 경제적으로 어렵고 힘들더라도 선교를 확장시키면 세계적인 코스모스 교회로 발전시켜 갈수도 있습니다. 기로에 서있습니다. 우리의 비전과 선택에 따라 그것이 결정될 것입니다. 여러분은 무엇을 선택하고 어떤 결정을 내리시렵니까? 우리는 초대교회에서 배워야 합니다. 선교역사에서 배워야 합니다.
지난 주, 신학교 동기들과 여수에 가다가 길을 잘못 들어 김제 금산교회를 방문했었습니다. 100년 전에 지은 ㄱ자교회입니다. 한국교회의 유산이요, 동시에 전북지방문화재입니다. 건물보다도 교회의 아름다운 역사가 진한 감동을 주는 교회입니다.
조 덕삼 장로님과 이 자익 목사님의 감동스런 이야기가 이교회에 있습니다.
경남 남해에서 태어난 이 자익은 6세 때 부모를 잃고 가난한 외삼촌 집에 언쳐 살았습니다. 학교도 다니지 못한 이 자익은 17세 때 굶주린 배를 채우기 위해 고향인 남해를 떠나 걸어, 걸어 금산까지 왔습니다. 그리고 이고장의 제일 부잣집을 찾아가 취직을 부탁했습니다. 사정을 듣고 조 덕삼은 어린 이 자익을 마방의 마부로(머슴) 일하도록 했습니다. 이 자익이 똑똑한 것을 알고 자기 아들 조 영호와 함께 공부를 시켰습니다.
그러던 어느 날, 테이트 선교사가 마을에 와서 선교를 하고 또 조 덕삼의 집 마방에 말을 맡기고 하루 밤을 묵었답니다. 오랫동안 테이트 선교사를 지켜봐온 조 덕삼은 “그렇게 살기 좋은 당신의 나라를 포기하고 이 가난한 조선 땅에 왜 왔는가? 라고 물었습니다.” 그러자 테이트는 “하나님의 특별한 사랑 때문입니다” 라고 대답하고 그에게 전도했습니다. 유교에 투철한 보수집안의 조 덕삼 이었지만 그토록 헌신적인 삶을 사는 테이트 선교사에 감동하여 이 자익과 함께 예수를 믿게 되었습니다. 이후 사랑채를 내어 예배를 보도록 했습니다. 이것이 금산교회의 출발입니다.
조 덕삼과 이 자익이 함께 믿음이 자라 영수가 되었고 3년이 지난 1907년 금산교회는 장로 장립투표를 하게 되었습니다. 묘하게도 두 사람이 후보에 올랐습니다. 신분제도가 뚜렷했던 그 시절 주인과 종이 경쟁한다는 것은 상상도 할 수 없던 때입니다. 그런데 이 자익이 주인을 누르고 장로로 선출되었습니다. 모두가 걱정스러워서 술렁이고 있는데 조 덕삼이 일어나 성도들을 향해 겸손히 말했습니다.
“우리 금산교회 성도들은 참으로 훌륭한 일을 해냈습니다. 저희 집에서 일하는 이 자익 영수는 저보다 믿음이 대단합니다. 그를 뽑아 주셔서 참으로 감사합니다.”
이 자익은 장로가 된 뒤 테이트 선교사를 대신해 교회 강단에서 설교했고 조 덕삼은 그의 말씀을 들었습니다. 집에서는 이 자익 장로가 조 덕삼을 주인으로 성실히 섬겼습니다. 조덕삼은 자신의 종을 장로로 섬겼을 뿐만 아니라 그를 평양에서 신학을 공무 할 수 있도록 주선하고 학비까지 지원하였습니다. 조 덕삼도 그로부터 3년 뒤 장로로 피택 되었습니다.
조덕삼 장로는 자신의 땅과 제당을 헌납하여 교회를 1908년에 신축 봉헌하였습니다. 이 자익 장로는 주인의 배려로 신학교를 졸업하고 목회자가 되었습니다. 조 덕삼 장로님은 이 자익 목사님을 1915년 금산교회 2대 목사로 초빙했습니다. 그리고 정성으로 섬기며 교회를 부흥시켰습니다. 많은 이들로 부터 존경을 받았습니다. 이 자익 목사님 역시 사랑으로 성도들을 돌봤고, 교단에서, 세 번이나 총회장을 지내는 한국교회를 빛내는 목사가 되었습니다.
빈부의 격차, 그 뿌리 깊은 신분제도, 남녀구분을 타파하고 예수 안에서 사랑으로 하나가 되는 한국교회의 아름다운 전통을 세운 교회를 만들었습니다.
금산교회는 100년째 아름다운 신앙의 뿌리를 이어오고 있습니다. 조 덕삼 장로님의 아들이 2대째 금산교회 장로로 섬겼고, 그의 손자까지 3대째 이 교회를 섬겼습니다. 바로 4선의 국회의원, 주일대사를 지낸, 얼마 전에 소천한 조 세형 장로입니다.
몇 년 전, 이 자익 목사님 기념회에 조 덕삼 장로님의 손자 조 세형 장로가 참석하여 축사를 하였습니다. 이 자익목사님의 손자 이규완 장로(대전 제일교회, 카이스트 교수, 연변과기대 교수)가 답사를 하였습니다. 우리 할아버지를 이렇게 훌륭한 목사로 만드신 분이 바로 조 덕삼 장로님이라고 감사하였습니다. 두 손자가 부둥켜안았습니다. 100년 동안 아름다운 교회를 만드신 분들입니다.
이 금산교회를 통하여, 주님께서 얼마나 기뻐하시고, 얼마나 영광 받으셨겠습니까?
지난번에 그 교회 장로님께서 우리 선조들은 우리에게 이렇게 아름다운 유산을 물려 주셨는데, 우리는 앞으로 100년 뒤에 어떤 교회를 후손에게 물려주어야 할까를 생각하며 준비 중이라고 말씀합디다.

우리는 지금 어떤 교회를 만들어 가고 있습니까?
주님께서 기뻐하시고, 영광 받으시는 교회를 만들어야 하지 않겠습니까?
모두 감동할 수 있는 스토리를 만들어 세상에 빛과 소금되는 교회 되게 해야 할 것입니다.
“눈물을 흘리며 씨를 뿌리는 자는 기쁨으로 거두리로다. 울며 씨를 뿌리러 나가는 자는 정녕 기쁨으로 그 단을 가지고 돌아오리로다.” “선을 행하되 낙심하지 말지니 피곤하지 아니하면 때가 이르매 거두리라.”

A church sowing seeds with tears
(Psalms 126:3-6, NIV) [3] The LORD has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy. [4] Restore our fortunes, O LORD, like streams in the Negev. [5] Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy. [6] He who goes out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him.
(Galatians 6:7-9, NIV) [7] Do not be deceived： God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. [8] The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. [9] Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
There is a blind pastor, Rev. Yeon-In-Soo. During the Korean War, he lost all of his properties and left his home town which is in North Korea. His mother was bed ridder because of serious illness. Although he was blind, with the help of his friend, he delivered newspaper and cleaned shoes for living. He gave the money which he earned from his jobs to his mother. And, his mother taught him, "You have to offer tithe and thanks offering first."
Then, the young boy complained, "If God is living and caring about us, how our family is living like this. You are sick and I am crippled." When he complained continually instead of giving thanks to God, his mother told him, "My son, you should not say so. Leaving our home town was sad. Losing our house was resentful. Losing our health was mournful. Then, furthermore, if we lose our faith and God, how can we overcome our situation. If you believe in God, we can recover our health and property. If you complain because the situation isn't good, then who will deliver us? In this miserable situation, we should more firmly believe in God and give thanks to Him."
From that time on, he began to give thanks to God instead of complain. Then, God started to lead him and bless his family with abundant properties. And, he became an elder. Finally, he became a pastor and preached the gospel for the rest of his life.
The great grand son of Underwood, Won-Han-Kwang who was the first Western protestant missionary to Korea said this, when he returned to the U.S.A., "While I lived in Korea, I never heard that the economy is good. We are having a better life than before." It means that we Koreans don't know about thanks. Maybe because of avarice, we forgot our thanks to God.
Martin Luther said, "In the world of Satan, there is no thanks." Clive Staples Lewis (1898-1963) said, "If we withdraw the thanks from the heart of a human, it will become hell immediately." The Bible says, "(1Thessalonians 5:16-18, NIV) [16] Be joyful always; [17] pray continually; [18] give thanks in all circumstances." In our worship service, by giving thanks to God, let us glorify God.
Today, our church becomes 9 years old and the Human Touch Center becomes 12 years old. And, we are also having the Feast of Harvest. On July 6th, 2001, we started to worship with the name, Cheonan Immanuel Mission Fellowship. From 2003, we have used the name Cheoan International Church.
I give thanks and glory to God because He allowed us to establish the Human Touch Center and International Church and guided us until today. And, I also appreciate you that you worked so hard without glory and honor. And, I also give thanks to those who had worked in our church and left to other place. Especially, the many brothers and sisters in Christ who started to believe in Jesus in our church. They came from Africa, Asia, Belarus, Russia, Mongolia and many other countries. They may be having worship service somewhere thinking about us.
I bless you that the abundant blessings of God be with our church and all of your family for all time.
When I look back, God, God of Ebenezer who always had helped us was with us all the time. We didn't know what to do and didn't have no enough resources. However, God allowed us to settle church and center down here, God allowed us to grow up beautifully by supplying life from Himself. Although we are still young, like 10 year olds, God used us to sow the beautiful seed of the gospel and love of Jesus to all the world.

(Psalms 133:1-3, NIV) [1] A song of ascents. Of David. How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity! [2] It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron's beard, down upon the collar of his robes. [3] It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the LORD bestows his blessing, even life forevermore.
Many brothers and sisters from all over the world gathered together under the name of Jesus, in the love of Jesus in our Church. Therefore, the passages for the sermon today indicate our church. Now, if we care more for each others, we can make the most beautiful church in the world. Let us encourage each other and work together.
What do you think about our church? Our church is a strong church.
Our church is the church which overcomes the limitations. Our church is like the church in Sardis because although we have little strength, yet we serve the world with the love of Jesus. Our church is like the church in Smyrna. We look like poor, but we are rich. When you serve the church with a burning heart, God blesses our church. When you serve our international brothers and sisters, God makes our church famous in the world. God made our church more than a local church, which is limited in Shin-boo-dong and Cheonan. God blessed our church to overcome the barriers of nationality, ethnicity and language. God made our church to break the gap of poor and rich, knowledge, culture and thought. He allowed us to hug each other and to sing happy hymns. When people think the ideal church, they call it cosmic church. Isn't our church like it?
Let us give glory and honor to God who made this kind of church.
We cannot see the fruits of peanut and sweet potato from outside. However, when we harvest them in autumn, they come out from the ground abundantly. Because our church is serving international brothers and sisters, after they grow up in their faith, they leave Korea and return back to their own countries. Therefore we cannot see the fruits from outside. Our church is like a rice seedbed. Our main job is to plant seeds. If we don't upset, but planting the gospel and love of Jesus, in the day of the Lord, we will reap the abundant fruits which can please God.
Although it seems like nothing, but planting only, let us not be disappointed because of no visible harvest.
In the Book of Ecclesiastes, 11:1, it says, (Ec 11:1, NIV) Cast your bread upon the waters, for after many days you will find it again.
In Psalms 126:5, it says, (Ps 126:5, NIV) Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy.
Let us sow seeds of gospel with all our strength and care. Let us plant the love of Jesus. If we cannot harvest them, God will send His angels to reap them into the ban of heaven.
Let us sing hymn 496.
My lovely brothers and sisters,
You did work so hard during the last 12 years. Some of you fell down because of burn out. Working in international mission seems like no fruit and vain. However, don't be disappointed, but work diligently. In 2Thessalonians 3:13, it says, (2Th 3:13, NIV) And as for you, brothers, never tire of doing what is right. In Galatians 6:9, it says, (Gl 6:9, NIV) Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
Even though we cannot see the vision and our future, encourage each others and work together more diligently.
We should establish our identity, vision, and target.
Our church is not a building, but each one of us who believe in Jesus. We who gather in God, you and I are Cheonan International Church. Now, our church spent childhood and is entering teenager period. Therefore, we should establish our identity, vision, and target.
In a watch, a minute's angle is 6 degrees. If a rocket which is heading to Moon from the Earth miscalculate 6 degree, when it reaches the landing zone, it will touchdown 20,000 Km from the target. Because of 6 degree difference, the result will be so big. Therefore, it is so important what vision we have and where our target is.
Last Tuesday, I went Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea. And, I visited the library of Ocean culture. I watched the history of Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) who crossed the Atlantic Ocean and found the New Continent. Because of him, Spain could expand its territory into the world and became a big country.
Let us think about Russian ancestors. They had a vision on expanding their territory and mission. Therefore, the expanded their territory up to Bering Sea. The time difference from East and West of Russian border is 11 hours. They earned a huge territory which contains a lot of natural resources. Let us think about the ancestors of England. They ruled the world.
Our old territory reached Manchuria and the Maritime Province of Siberia. If we made the borderline clearly, we may have even Alaska. However, our ancestors only concerned about the social level and a propitious site for a grave. And, they had two-year mourning for the death of their parents. They had no any vision except success in an examination and rising in the world and gaining fame. Therefore, they lost the huge land and made this small peninsula into half.
The vision of the leader and the power of the people should be harmonious. And, we need the blessings of God in it. The same principle can be applied to a nation, family, and a church, too. We should grasp the core of a nation. We should forsee the future. Therefore, we should grasp the ultimate value. We should not live without the vision for tomorrow, but we have to prepare tomorrow today.
Let us see the amazing things which God will do by our church, You and I through the vision.
We should make it our target which God wants to accomplish in this world. I hope that our church will grow as a church which pleases God. I pray that our church will be as light and salt in the world. I bless our church to be the ark of salvation and the resource of blessing. I bless that our church will expand the nation of God in the world. I bless our church to be like this, in the name of Jesus.
Let us develop our church as a cosmic church.
Now we are standing on the crossroad where we have to decided the identity and the target. If we give up our mission because it is difficult, it will confine our church in this basement without our own building.
On the contrary, although we are in difficulties economically, if we expand our mission, our church will be the cosmic church. We are standing on the crossroad. Everything will be decided according to our vision and choice. What will you choose and what decision will you make? We should learn it from early Church. We should learn it from the mission history.
Last week, on the way to Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea with my former classmates, we visited Kum-San church, Kim-Jae, accidently. It was an old building which was built 100 years ago. It is a legacy of Korean church and cultural assets of Jeon-Buk province. It has more important value in its history than a building.
A great human story of elder Jo-Duk-Sam and a pastor Lee-Ja-Ik in this church.
Lee-Ja-Ik was born in Nam-Hae, Kyung-Nam province. In 6 years old, he lost e lost parents and lived in poor uncle's house. He couldn't go to school. In 17 years old, he went to Kum-San because of hunger. And, he was hired in the richest house. After listened all the story from Lee-Ja-Ik, Jo-Duk-Sam hired the young Lee-Ja-Ik as a footman. And, because he learned that Lee-Ja-Ik is smart, he allowed him to study with his son, Jo-Young-Ho.
Then, one day, an American missionary, Tate came to the village and spread the gospel. He entrusted his horse to a horse stable of Jo-Duk-Sam and slept that night. Jo-Duk-Sam had known missionary Tate for a long time. He asked Tate, "Why did you leave your beautiful country and came to this poor country, Chosun? Then, Tate said, "It is because of the special love of God." And, he shared the gospel to him. Although family of Jo-Duk-Sam devoted themselves to Confucianism, because he was touched by the devoted life of Tate, he started to believe in Jesus with Lee-Ja-Ik. Later, Jo-Duk-Sam donated one of his house for a sanctuary. It was the beginning of Kum-San church.
Both Duk-sam and Ja-ik's faith grew, and they both became leaders. 3 years later, in 1907 Kume-san church, they had a vote on who would become a church elder. Strangely, both people became candidates. It was a era where the status system was clear. At that time, it was unimaginable for a master and his servant to compete. Everyone was worried and uneasy, but then, Duk-sam stood up and said toward the congregation humbly, "Our congregation has done a wonderful deed, leader Ja-ik has a better faith than I do, thank you for voting for him."
After Ja-ik became a church elder, he preached instead of the missionary Tate, and Duk-sam listened to him. At home, Ja-ik served Duk-sam faithfully as a master, and Duk-sam not only served his servant as a church elder, but also acted as an agent for Ja-ik, and paid for him so that he could study theology. 3 years later, Duk-sam became a church elder too.
elder Duk-san donated his land and sugar mill to help construction on the church in 1908. elder Ja-ik was able to graduate from theological school and become a pastor through the care for his master. Elder Duk-san invited Ja-ik as the second pastor at Kume-san church in 1915. And he served the church with devotion and revived the church. He was respected from many people. Pastor Ja-ik also took care of the congregation with love, and became a pastor who made Korean churches shine, and became a chairman three times for an order.
He broke through the gulf between the rich and poor, the gender gap, and made a church of beautiful Korean church tradition that became one in God's love.
Kume-san church is keeping a beautiful root of faith for 100 years now. elder Duk-sam's sons have been serving the church as an elder for 2 generations, and even his grandson has been serving this church as the third generation. He was elder Jo Sae-hyung, the fourth congressman, and ambassador. He died not so long ago.
Several years ago, in the memorial celebration of pastor Lee-Ja-Ik, the grandson of elder Jo-Duk-Sam, Jo-Se-Hyung participated and gave a congratulatory address. Then, the grandson of pastor Lee-Ja-Ik, elder Lee-Kyu-Whan who is a professor of KAIST and Yanbian University of Science & Technology made an address in reply. He said that the man who made my grandfather so famous pastor was elder Jo-Duk-Sam. The two grandson hugged each others. They made a beautiful church for 100 years.
God was glorified through this Kum-San church so much. And, He was so pleased by this church.
Last time, the elder of that church gave us such a beautiful inheritance like this, he said that he is thinking about what type of church we should prepare for our descendents 100 years later, and is working on it.
loving congregation, what church are we making right now? shouldn't we make a church that the Lord rejoices in and receive glory? we must make a touching story and become a church that is like light and salt in this world.
(Psalms 126:5-6, NIV) [5] Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy. [6] He who goes out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him.
(Gl 6:9, NIV) Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
