지혜롭게 하는 주의 말씀
(욥 28:20-28, 쉬운) [20] 그런데 그런 지혜는 어디에서 나오나? 총명이 있는 곳은 어딜까? [21] 어떤 생물도 볼 수 없고, 공중의 새조차 볼 수 없으니. [22] 멸망과 사망도 '우리 귀로 지혜에 관한 소문을 들은 적은 있지'라고만 말하네. [23] 오직 하나님만이 지혜의 길을 아시고, 총명이 어디 있는지 아신다네. [24] 그분은 땅 끝까지 보시고, 하늘 아래 모든 것을 살피시기 때문이지. [25] 하나님은 바람의 무게도 재시고 물도 측량하신다네. [26] 그분은 비에게 명령하시고 천둥에게 갈 길을 지시하시네. [27] 그 때에 그분은 지혜를 보고, 그것을 계산하셨네. 지혜를 세우시고, 시험하셨지. [28] 하나님께서 사람에게 이르시길, '주님을 경외함이 지혜며 악을 떠나는 것이 총명이니라.'고 하셨다네.”
중국 진(秦)나라의 중기(中期)라는 신하는 말재주가 좋기로 유명했습니다.
어느 날 진왕이 중기를 불러 정치 토론을 했는데,
중기에게 여지없이 논박당한 끝에 완패하고 말았습니다.
자존심이 상해 몹시 화가 난 진왕은 속으로 중기를 매우 괘씸하게 생각했습니다.
'어떻게 왕의 체면을 조금도 봐주지 않는단 말인가?'
그런데도 중기가 난 모르겠다는 태도로
유유히 왕궁을 빠져나가자 진왕은 마침내 소리를 버럭 질렀습니다.
"저 놈을 죽여야만 내 속이 풀릴 것이다!"
중기가 집에 돌아가서 곰곰이 생각해 보니,
진왕이 자신을 그냥 내버려두지 않을 성 싶었습니다.
아차, 싶었지만 때늦은 후회인지라 고민을 하다가 꾀를 내었습니다.
그래서 부랴부랴 친구를 찾아가 부탁을 했고,
중기의 친구는 재빨리 왕궁(王宮)에 올라가 진왕을 만났습니다.
그리고 이렇게 말하였습니다.
"중기는 참으로 무식한 놈입니다.
영명하신 대왕을 만난 것이 천만 다행이지요.
그런 무례한 짓을 저질렀는데도 대왕께서는 한마디 책망도 않고 곱게 돌려보냈습니다.
만약 걸 왕이나 주 왕 같은 폭군을 만났으면 그는 이미 죽은 목숨이죠.
대왕마마, 저는 이 일을 사방에 널리 알릴 작정입니다.
대왕께서 얼마나 너그러우시며 얼마나 선비를 예우하는지
모든 사람이 알도록 말입니다."
이러한 칭찬을 듣자 진왕은 마음이 흡족해져서 기분이 좋아졌습니다.
"과찬이오. 사실은 중기의 말에 일리가 있어 마침 상(賞)을 내리려던 참이었소."
이처럼 지혜는 죽을 자리에서도 사람의 생명을 구해낼 뿐만 아니라
오히려 상(賞)까지 받도록 해주는 놀라운 능력이 있습니다.
그래서 성경은 지혜의 귀중함을 다음과 같이 말합니다.
(욥 28:15-18, 개정) [15] 순금으로도 바꿀 수 없고 은을 달아도 그 값을 당하지 못하리니 [16] 오빌의 금이나 귀한 청옥수나 남보석으로도 그 값을 당하지 못하겠고 [17] 황금이나 수정이라도 비교할 수 없고 정금 장식품으로도 바꿀 수 없으며 [18] 진주와 벽옥으로도 비길 수 없나니 지혜의 값은 산호보다 귀하구나
우리는 자녀들이 지혜로운 사람이 되기를 원합니다.
왜냐하면 미련한 자식에게는 아무리 많은 재물을 물려줘도 소용없기 때문입니다.
내가 평생을 힘들게 벌어서 막대한 유산을 물려준다하더라도
자녀가 미련하면 불과 몇 년이 안 되어 다 털어 먹고 맙니다.
하지만 지혜로운 자녀는
옷 한 벌 변변히 물려주지 못하더라도
지혜가 있기에 황무지에 떨어뜨려놔도 잘 살아남습니다.
그것을 성경은 이렇게 표현하고 있습니다.
(잠 14:1) 지혜로운 여인은 자기 집을 세우되 미련한 여인은 자기 손으로 그것을 허느니라
그러면 어떻게 하여야 지혜로운 사람이 될 수 있습니까?
아니 그보다 저는 사람이 후천적으로도 지혜롭게 될 수 있을까에 대해
늘 믿기가 힘들었습니다.
사람의 머리는 태어날 때 이미 아이큐가 다 정해지고
따라서 똑똑한 사람과 미련한 사람도 그 때 다 결정되는 것이라 믿어서
한번 결정된 대로 평생을 살아가는 것이며
중간에는 바꿀 수가 없는 것이라고 생각했습니다.
그러나 그렇지 않습니다.
왜냐하면 성경은 하나님께서 사람에게 지혜를 주신다고 했기 때문입니다.
어린 솔로몬은 17살의 나이에 왕이 되자 두려웠습니다.
한 나라를 어떻게 다스려야 할 지 막막했습니다.
그래서 하나님께 나라를 다스릴 지혜를 달라고 기도하였습니다.
그러자 하나님께서는 그에게 지혜를 주셨습니다.
분명히 태어날 때는 없었던 지혜인데 중간에 하나님께서 주신 것입니다.
(왕상 3:12) 내가 네 말대로 하여 네게 지혜롭고 총명한 마음을 주노니 네 앞에도 너와 같은 자가 없었거니와 네 뒤에도 너와 같은 자가 일어남이 없으리라
지난 시간에 말씀드렸던 영국의 빅토리아 여왕도
18세에 왕이 되자 두렵고 막막하던 차에
아마 성경에서 솔로몬의 이야기를 읽었던 것 같습니다.
그래서 나라를 하나님의 말씀위에 세우겠다고 기도하였더니
하나님께서는 그에게도 지혜를 주셔서 해가 지지 않는 나라로 만들어주셨습니다.
이처럼 성경은 하나님께서는 구하는 자에게 지혜를 주신다고 하셨습니다.
(약 1:5) 너희 중에 누구든지 지혜가 부족하거든 모든 사람에게 후히 주시고 꾸짖지 아니하시는 하나님께 구하라 그리하면 주시리라
이처럼 하나님께서는 얼마든지 사람에게 지혜를 주시기도 하시고
또 때로는 느부갓넷살에게 했던 것처럼 거두시기도 하시는 분이십니다.
세계적인 신유사역 및 복음전도자로 유명했던
미국의 케네스 헤긴 (1917-2003, Rev. Kenneth E. Hagin) 목사님이 목회하던
교회의 주일학교 선생이 첫 딸이 있었는데 이 딸이 지능(知能)이 떨어지는 겁니다.
그래서 초등학교 1학년만 7년째 다니는데 상급학년으로 진급이 안 됩니다.
마침내 그 학교에서는 도저히 교육을 시킬 수 없는 아이이니
그만 포기하고 학교를 그만두게 하라는 것입니다.
거기에다 이 아이가 교회에 나오면 의자에 가만히 앉아서 예배를 드리지 못하고
14살이나 먹었는데도 치마를 입은 채 배로 밀면서 의자 밑을 기어 다니는 겁니다.
마치 3-4살짜리 처럼 행동합니다.
너무나 불쌍한데 어찌할 도리가 없습니다.
그런데 부흥회가 진행되던 어느 날
예수님을 영접하는 사람들은 앞으로 나와서 기도를 받으라는 말에
누가 시키지도 않았는데 이 아이도 나오더니 제단 앞에 선 사람들 틈에 선 것입니다.
그래서 기도를 해주고 그 교회를 떠났다가
오랜 세월이 지나 다시 찾아갔더니
잘 차려입은 어떤 아름다운 여인이 아주 깔끔하게 옷을 입힌
세 명의 아이들을 옆에 앉히고 예배를 드리는 것입니다.
예배 후 그 교회의 비서가 그 여인의 이야기를 들려주면서
그 아름다운 부인이 바로 그 지능이 떨어져 의자 밑을 기어 다니던
소녀였었다고 말해주는 것입니다.
그리고 교회 밖의 여러 채의 신축주택들을 보여주면서
바로 그 부인이 직접 회사를 운영하며 주택들을 짓고 있다고 말하는 것입니다.

이처럼 오늘도 하나님께서는
구하는 사람과 가정, 그리고 나라에 지혜를 주십니다.
그러면 어떻게 하여야 이처럼 귀한 지혜를 얻을 수 있습니까?
하나님과 가까이하며 섬길 때 주십니다.
왜냐하면 지혜는 하나님께 속한 것이기 때문입니다.
다니엘은 소년시절 바벨론에 포로로 잡혀갔습니다. (단 1:4)
"소년"으로 번역된 히브리어 "엘라딤"은
히브리사전에서 15-20세까지의 청년을 의미합니다.
그러니 아마도 나이가 하이틴으로 청소년의 시기이었던 것 같습니다.
또 그에게는 하나님을 경외하는 3명의 친구가 있었습니다.
그들이 하나님을 경외할 때 하나님께서 그들에게 지혜를 주셨다고 했습니다.
(단 1:17) 하나님이 이 네 소년에게 학문을 주시고 모든 서적을 깨닫게 하시고 지혜를 주셨으니 다니엘은 또 모든 환상과 꿈을 깨달아 알더라
요셉도 17세의 나이에 이집트에 종으로 팔려갔습니다.
그런데 거기서도 철저히 하나님을 섬기자 하나님께서 지혜를 주셔서
사람들에게 인정을 받고 이집트의 국무총리가 되게 하셨습니다.
(행 7:10) 하나님께서는 요셉에게 지혜를 주셔서 이집트 왕 바로의 총애를 받게 하셨습니다. 왕은 요셉을 총리로 삼아 이집트와 왕궁을 다스리게 했습니다.
다윗도 하나님을 경외하는 사람이었습니다.
그래서 하나님께서 지혜를 주셨습니다.
그가 장군이 되고 나중에 왕이 된 것이 힘만 세고 싸움만 잘해서 된 것이 아닙니다.
하나님께서 주신 지혜가 나타나니까 사람들이
그가 지도자가 되는 것을 당연히 여기게 되었다고 했습니다.
(삼상 18:5) 다윗은 사울이 보내는 곳마다 가서 지혜롭게 행하매 사울이 그를 군대의 장으로 삼았더니 온 백성이 합당히 여겼고 사울의 신하들도 합당히 여겼더라
(삼상 18:14) 다윗이 그의 모든 일을 지혜롭게 행하니라 여호와께서 그와 함께 계시니라
이처럼 지혜는 하나님께로부터 오고
하나님께서는 하나님을 경외하는 자에게 지혜를 주십니다.
(잠 9:10, 개정) 여호와를 경외하는 것이 지혜의 근본이요 거룩하신 자를 아는 것이 명철이니라
우리가 지혜의 근본이신 하나님을 제대로 섬기기 위해서는
먼저 하나님을 바르게 알아야 합니다.
그리고 하나님을 바르게 알기 위해서는 하나님께서 주신 성경을 알아야 합니다.
그럴 때 하나님께서 주시는 지혜와 명철을 통해
하나님을 바르게 섬기며 그 분께서 주시는 복을 누릴 수가 있는 것입니다.
한 예로 영국이 위대하여 질 수 있었던 것은 성경의 위대성을 발견한 후부터입니다.
제1단계로는 성경을 번역한 알프레드 왕 때(서기 780년)
영국은 미개국에서 벗어나 통일왕국이 되었습니다.
제2단계 성경을 공식으로 반포한 엘리자베스 여왕 1세(1558년)부터
영국은 강대국의 대열에 들었습니다.
제3단계 빅토리아 여왕 때(1837-1901)
성경으로 나라를 다스리겠다고 선언할 때
영국은 해가 지지 않는 나라가 되었습니다.
그래서 빅토리아여왕 (Queen Victoria, 1819-1901)은
"영국을 가장 우수한 나라로 만들어 준 것이 성경이다."
라고 말하였고
프랑스 작가 빅토르 위고 (레미제라블)도 말하기를
"영국이 셰익스피어를 만들었다면 성경은 영국을 만들었다."라고 말했습니다.
영국은 원래 해적의 나라요 야만적인 나라였습니다.
그러나 성경을 받아들임으로써 가장 신사적이고 강한 나라가 되었습니다.
이처럼 성경에는 사람과 사회, 나라를 변화시키는 힘이 있습니다.
오늘 우리도 하나님을 경외하며 하나님께서 주신 성경을 배울 때
우리는 하나님께서 주신 지혜로
아름답고 풍성한 삶을 살 수가 있습니다.
내일부터 수요일까지는 아산 호서대학에서 중고등부 수련회가 있습니다.
또 목요일부터 토요일까지는 금산에 있는 서대산 리조트에서
아동부 수련회가 열립니다.
그리고 오는 8/18-19에는 우리교회에서 영어캠프가 열립니다.
모두가 어린 아이로부터 청소년에 이르기까지 인생의 중요한 시기에
하나님 섬기는 법을 배우기 위해 기도하며 성경을 배우기 위한 모임입니다.
이 일을 위해서 기도해주시기 바랍니다.
이들에게 요셉, 솔로몬, 다윗, 다니엘에게 주셨던 하나님 경외하는 마음과
또한 지혜를 주셔서 다음 세대가 더욱 하나님 앞에 서는
대한민국이 될 수 있도록 기도해주시기를 부탁드립니다.
오늘 대한민국의 많은 부모들은 나라와 세계 앞에 우뚝 설 자녀를 키우고 싶어서
그러한 지혜를 구하려고 갖은 노력과 희생을 다합니다.
서울로 이사 가고 어떻게든 강남8학군에 들어가려고 합니다.
그러나 방향이 잘못되었습니다.
우리는 성경의 가르침에 귀를 기울여야 합니다.
(욥 12:13) 지혜와 권능이 하나님께 있고 계략과 명철도 그에게 속하였나니
(잠 2:6) 대저 여호와는 지혜를 주시며 지식과 명철을 그 입에서 내심이며
하나님을 경외하면 지혜와 명철은 저절로 따라오는 것입니다.
1636년 설립된 미국 최초이며 최고의 대학인
하버드 대학교(Harvard University)는
본래 "그리스도와 그의 교회"를 위하여 설립된 것이었습니다.
오늘날 세계에서 가장 유명한 대학교가 된 하버드가
가능하게 된 가장 중요한 이유를
존 하버드(John Harvard)는 이렇게 말했습니다.
"모든 학생들로 하여금, 그들의 생의 궁극적인 목적들을
진지한 태도로써 생각하도록 가르쳤습니다.
그렇게 함으로써 영원한 생명이신 하나님과 예수 그리스도를 알게 하였지요.
그리고 또한 이를 통해서 모든 지식의 유일한 근원으로서의
그리스도를 깨닫게 되는 것이지요.
나아가서는 주님만이 지혜를 주실 수 있는 분이라는 것을 알게 됩니다.
또한 모든 학생들이 기도를 통해서, 그리스도가 구주이시며,
만물의 창조자시라는 것을 은연중에 깨닫게 하였습니다."
하버드 대학교의 정문에는 오늘날까지도 다음과 같은 글귀가 적혀있습니다.
"하나님께서 우리들을 뉴잉글랜드에 안전하게 데려다주신 후,
우리들은 우리의 집을 지었으며 생활에 필요한 필수품들을 얻을 수 있었다.
뿐만 아니라 하나님께 예배드릴 수 있는 안락한 장소를 마련하였고,
시민 정부까지도 세울 수 있었다.
우리가 고대하고 있는 것들 중의 하나는 지식을 배워 나가는 것이다.
그래서 그 배운 지식을 우리 세대에서 그치지 않고,
우리들의 후대에까지 물려주어야 할 것이다.
그러기 위해 교회에 무지한 목사님들이 들어서게 되는 일만은 없어야 하겠다.
현재 살아 있는 우리의 목사님들이 돌아가시게 될 경우에 생길지도 모르는,
그러한 사태를 방지하기 위해서
우리들은 지식을 배워 나가야 한다고 생각한다."
라고 쓰여 있습니다.
즉 하버드 대학의 설립자였던 젊은 청교도 성직자 존 하버드는
4백여 권의 책과 재산의 절반인 현금 779파운드를 학교에 기부하면서
미국사회가 교회를 통한 신앙지도자와 신앙인을 양성하는
영적교육을 통해 앞으로도 든든히 서가게 되기를 바랐던 것입니다.
지식이란 배워서 안다는 말입니다.
그런데 사람이 가장 먼저 배워야 할 것은 하나님을 아는 지식입니다.
(잠 1:7, 개정) 여호와를 경외하는 것이 지식의 근본이라
(잠 9:10, 개정) 여호와를 경외하는 것이 지혜의 근본이요 거룩하신 자를 아는 것이 명철이니라.
근본이라는 뜻은 히브리 원어로 "레뒤쉬"라고 합니다.
일의 첫 단계라는 뜻입니다.
즉 하나님을 경외하는 것이 모든 지식의 시작이 되는 첫 단계라는 말입니다.
또 기초, 근본이라는 뜻과 중요하다는 뜻도 있습니다.
하나님을 경외하는 것이 인생의 가장 기초이며 중요한 지식이라는 말입니다.
하나님을 경외함과 섬김으로 인생의 기초를 삼고
우리의 자녀들을 말씀으로 가르침으로 그들의 미래를 준비하여
하나님의 복을 천대에 누리며
온 세상에 구원의 복음을 전하는 천국백성 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원 드립니다.
The Word of God makes us wise
(Job 28:20-28, NIV) [20] "Where then does wisdom come from? Where does understanding dwell? [21] It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing, concealed even from the birds of the air. [22] Destruction and Death say, 'Only a rumor of it has reached our ears.' [23] God understands the way to it and he alone knows where it dwells, [24] for he views the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens. [25] When he established the force of the wind and measured out the waters, [26] when he made a decree for the rain and a path for the thunderstorm, [27] then he looked at wisdom and appraised it; he confirmed it and tested it. [28] And he said to man, 'The fear of the Lord--that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding.'"
There was a man in Chin country in ancient China, named Junggi, who had a talent for speaking. One day, the king of Chin country summoned him to discuss politics and adminstration of the country, but he was completely defeated by Junggi. The king was very angry because Junggi hurt his pride, and he considered Junggi an inexcusable person.
"He didn't consider my face."
Junggi went out from the palace as if nothing had happened.
Then, the king of Chin country shouted suddenly.
"I will kill him. Then, I will satisfy myself."
When Junggi returned back to his house, he regretted what had happened, because the king might try to harm him. So, he worried and thought up a scheme. He called his friend and asked him to do something for him. The friend of Junggi quickly went to the palace to meet the king. And, he said something like this. "Your majesty, Junggi is such an impolite man. He is so lucky to have you as a king, because you are so generous. Although he has such rude behavior, you never scold him, but let him go back to his house peacefully. If he had a tyrant such as king Gul or king Ju, he might already be dead. Your majesty, from now on, I will advertise what you did to him to everybody. How you are generous and treated this scholar respectfully."
Because he was spoken to like this, the king of Chin country was comforted. Then, he said, "You overpraised me. But, because Junggi's opinion was good and reasonable. I was trying to award him."
Like this, wisdom can save people from the place of death and even give them an award instead of death. Therefore, the Bible speaks of the preciousness of the wisdom in this way,
(Job 28:15-18, NIV) [15] It cannot be bought with the finest gold, nor can its price be weighed in silver. [16] It cannot be bought with the gold of Ophir, with precious onyx or sapphires. [17] Neither gold nor crystal can compare with it, nor can it be had for jewels of gold. [18] Coral and jasper are not worthy of mention; the price of wisdom is beyond rubies.
We want our children to be wise, because if our children are stupid, although they inherit a lot of property, it would be useless soon. Although I acquire all the possessions which I can earn through my entire life, if my children are foolish, within a few years they will waste all of it. In contrast, wise children can save their own life and earn a lot of property, even if they don't inherit any good things. Therefore, the Bible describes it,
(Proverbs 14:1, NIV) The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down.
Then, how can we be wise? Actually, I couldn't believe that wisdom can be acquired after we were born. I thought that the intelligence quotient is already set when we are born. And, no one can change it later.
However, the Bible doesn't say so, because the Bible says that God gives wisdom to people at anytime. Young Solomon was afraid when he became a king at the age of 17. He didn't know how to rule his country. Therefore, he asked God to grant him wisdom to rule the country.
Then, God gave him wisdom.
Solomon didn't have wisdom when he was born, but God gave him it later in his life.
(1kings 3:12, NIV) I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be.
Queen Victoria, the queen of England was also afraid when she became a queen at the age of 18. She might have read the story of king Solomon from the Bible. Therefore, she also asked God for wisdom and prayed that she would build her nation on the Word of God. Then, God gave her wisdom and allowed the nation to be a nation on which the sun never sets. Like this, the Bible says that God allows wisdom to those who ask.
(James 1:5, NIV) If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.
In the same way, God can give wisdom to anybody and withdraw it from anybody as He did to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.
A famous world evangelist and healing minster, Rev. Kenneth E. Hagin (1917-2003) experienced amazing thing in his ministry. In his church, there was a Sunday school teacher. She had a daughter who a had mental problem. She went to elementary school and studied 1st grade for 7years, but she couldn't finish it.
Finally, the school notified her mother that they couldn't teach her anymore. Thus, they urged her to drop out. Furthermore, when the girl came to church, she couldn't worship normally, but she crawled under the pews, even though she was 14 years old. She acted liked a 3-4 years old baby. She was in a miserable situation, but nobody could help her.
Then, one day, there was a revival meeting in the church. And, although nobody asked the girl to come out, she came to the altar with others and prayed. Rev. Kenneth E. Hagin left the church for a number of years, because he got a new ministry, touring evangelism. After that time, he visited the church again. Then, a well dressed beautiful lady sitting on a pew with three well dressed children and worshipping. After the worship service, the secretary of the church told him, her story, that she was the girl who had a mental problem. And, she showed several new buildings around the church and said that the lady is constructing those by her own company.

Like this, even today God still gives wisdom to those who ask and the family, and the nation. Then, how can we get this precious wisdom from God. When we draw close to God and serve Him, He gives us wisdom, because the wisdom belongs to God. Daniel was captured at a young age and was taken to Babylon. (Dan. 1:4)
The Hebrew word, "Eladim" which was translated young boy means 15-20 years old people.
Maybe he was in his late teens. And, he had three friends with him who also feared God. When they served God, God gave them wisdom.
(Dan. 1:17, NIV) To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds.
When Joseph was 17 years old, he was sold to Egypt as a slave. Because he served God thoroughly there, God gave him wisdom so that people recognized him and finally he became the prime minister of Egypt.
(Acts 7:10, NIV) and rescued him from all his troubles. He gave Joseph wisdom and enabled him to gain the goodwill of Pharaoh king of Egypt; so he made him ruler over Egypt and all his palace.
David also served God. Therefore, God gave him wisdom. The reason that he became a general and king was not because he was so strong and fought well, but because the wisdom of God manifested in him, people thought that it was fair and proper he became a leader.
(1Kings 18:5, NIV) Whatever Saul sent him to do, David did it so successfully that Saul gave him a high rank in the army. This pleased all the people, and Saul's officers as well.
(1Kings 18:14, NIV) In everything he did he had great success, because the LORD was with him.
Like this, wisdom comes from God, and, God gives wisdom to those who respect God.
(Proverbs 9:10, NIV) "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
Therefore, if we want to serve God properly, God who is the origin of wisdom, we should know God first.
And, to know God we should know the Bible first. Then, through the wisdom and understanding which God gives us, we can serve Him properly and can receive His blessings.
An example of this is England. The reason England could be great was because they found the greatness of the bible. For the first step, during the time of King Alfred, which was around A.D 780, the bible was translated. England became a civilized country, and united their kingdom. For the second step, starting from the time Queen Elizabeth I, they distributed the Bible publicly,(1558) England became one of the countries of high rank.
The third step was during the time of Queen Victoria,(1837-1901) When she declared to rule the country by the bible, England became the country where the sun never set. So Queen victoria said, "The bible made England into the best country." French writer Victor-Marie Hugo, (1802-1885) said, "If England made Shakespeare, the bible made England."
England was once a land of pirates, a barbaric land. However, when they received the bible, it became one of the most civilized and powerful countries. Like this, the bible has the power to transform people, societies, and countries.
Today, when we learn about the bible, which God gave us, and when we fear the Lord, we can live a beautiful and abundant life through the wisdom God gives us. Starting tomorrow to Wednesday, there is a camp for the teenagers at Asan Hoseo University. And on Thursday to Saturday in Kume-san at the Seo-dae mountain resort, there is a camp for the Sunday school.
And this coming August 18-19 our church opens an English camp. It is a gathering to learn how to serve God by praying and learning the bible. It is an important time of life for these little ones, starting from young children to teenagers. I want you to pray for this. I ask that you will pray that these little children and teenagers will receive a heart of acknowledging the Lord like Joseph, Solomon, David, and Daniel and wisdom, so that they will be the next Korean generation that will stand before, and closer to God.
Today many parents of Korea want to raise children that will stand firm in front of the country and the world. So they give great effort and sacrifices to earn such wisdom. They move to Seoul and try to put their children into Gang-nam schools no matter what the cost. However that is the wrong way. We have to listen carefully to the teachings of the bible.
(Jb 12:13, NLT) "But true wisdom and power are found in God; counsel and understanding are his.
(Pr 2:6, NIV) For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
If you fear God, wisdom and knowledge follow automatically.
America's first university, Harvard university, was built in 1636. It was originally built for Christ and his churches. Today, Harvard has become the most famous college in the worlds, and a important reason it could be so was because John Harvard said, "I taught all students to think about their purpose in life with a serious attitude. So I could show them God and Jesus Christ, who is the eternal life. And through this, they would realize that Christ is the only foundation to all knowledge. Furthermore, they would learn that only Christ can give wisdom. And I made all the students realize in secret, and through prayer, that Jesus is Savior, and the creator of all things."
On the front gates of Harvard, there is a writing that had been engraved there, and it's still there to this day, it says, "God has safely taken us to New england, and we built our houses, and obtained things we needed for our daily lives. Not only that, but God also provided a comfortable place for us to worship him, and we could even raise a citizen government. One of the things we have been expecting is to learn, and pass the knowledge down to our future generations. To do this, we must never let a ignorant/stupid pastor come into our church. Just in case our pastors who are with us now, pass away, and I think we must be prepared for that situation and learn.
It means that the young puritan cleric, John Harvard, the founder of the university, donated 400 books and half of his fortune to the school because he wanted the school to grow strong and firm through spiritual education. You can learn knowledge, but the first thing that a man has to learn is the knowledge to learn about God.
(Pr 1:7, NIV) The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
(Pr 9:10, NLT) Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment.
The word for "origin" in hebrew is "Redish". It means the first step of work. Therefore, it means that fearing the Lord is the first step toward all knowledge, And it also has another meaning of importance. It means that Fearing the Lord is the very first step and is itself important knowledge. I bless in the name of Jesus that you will fear God and serve him and make it the first step of your life, and that you will prepare your children's future by teaching them with the words of God, and that you will all be citizens of God that spreads the gospel all over the world and will receive blessings for a thousand generations.
